This is mostly about the top leagues, but the depth of leagues is almost infinite. Almost anyone can get involved in a pub team or a Sunday league team. That’s what makes football so great, it’s open to all, you just have to have a passion for the game.

The English FA cup is amazing, 2 years ago my local team Chorley FC were in the 6th division, the 2nd 3rd and 4th round they got drawn to play a championship team (2nd division) who were huge favourites but every time they lost to our little town. In the 5th round they got drawn against Wolverhampton Wanderers a premier League team and only lost 1-0 it was an epic run for such a tiny team

The matches don't just end when the referee feels like it. The match is in two halves. The refs keep a careful note of any stoppages, injury time, time wasting, pitch invasions by fans etc during the game. This is then added onto the game at the end of each half. The time added for each item IS at the ref's discretion, but they don't just stick on the odd 20 minutes when they feel like it. This can make games very tense at the end when you end up in this injury time period, especially during crucial matches involving team relegation or promotion.

The "Kicking it back and forward to each other" is done for quite a few reasons, 1, as the video mentions, you keep possession, the other team can't score if they don't have the ball 2, you hopefully frustrate your opponent and draw them out of their positions, imagine two centre backs kicking the ball between each other, eventually the opposition strikers and centre forward will try to press them, this leaves a hole in their position, so one of your team mates goes into that space and receives the ball, now one of the opposition wingers is going to have to press them, leaving a space on the flanks... before you know it the other team aren't in any of their positions as they're having to cover other spaces left behind by their team mates causing disorganisation. 3 it can simply be to run the clock down if you're already winning, 4 it can be used to give your team a breather and a chance to reorganise themselves after being under some heavy pressure. Football is a very cerebral as well as physical game, its like a physical chess match constantly hanging on a knifes edge

In regards to signing kids it works kinda like this, in the UK (and most of the footballing world) , individual teams having scouting teams that scan practically everywhere with a lot of these being childrens leagues practically (U9s through to U18s) and approach them into joining the clubs academy. Where they'll train football practically daily, as well as have their schooling - it's here where obviously some go onto to eventually reach the first team, others get loaned out to other clubs and some unfortunately fail to make the cut.
So for us our schools and University teams are there like you're school/college system, but it's a positive side effect that scouts can attend these matches looking out for talent. But generally most players who enter the footballing pyramid are spotted from amateur/non-league football the world over. Some huge players in the premier league now were originally scouting like on the streets of Brazil and Africa playing barefoot when they were offered the chance to move country and try to make a career out of it.
Equally in some of these lower league clubs (say a League one or two club), if a promising player comes through their academy and a Top team comes in to buy them, a sell-on fee can be useful as say the top team buy a promising player for £5mil with a 20% sell on clause. Say that player turns out to be amazing and is sold in the future for say like £80 million, 20% of that £80mil will go to that original lower league club. Which can absolutely change the fortunes for that club, the sums I listed are a bit extreme but you get the point.

  • @WKogut
    @WKogut 2 роки тому +36

24:37 he said "to youth academies", most professional teams have their own academies that they develop young players in (they are mostly local kids, very rarely you see a foreign kid there) and when they get older they may join your main team. The club has several youth teams and most often a reserve team for players old enough to be pros, but not good enough to be in the first team. You are full on pro from the age of 16 most of the times, there is no school/college system like in the US. .

Waiting one or the other cracking up makes it more exciting. Most boring ones are between two defensive team that have no goals to chase. They are middle pack team and they both happy about it. It's nearly end of the season so even players don't care that much and ball always stays in the middle of the pitch. It's a nightmare for people who watching it.

I believe there are currently about 42,000 teams in England. About 2000 of these are professional or semi-professional. There are 11 tiers to the National League System, with the top 5 tiers being professional.
There are 20 teams in the Premier League (tier 1),
72 clubs in the English Football League (divided into 24 clubs in the Championship aka tier 2, 24 clubs in League 1 aka tier 3, and 24 clubs in League 2 aka tier 4),
68 clubs in the National League (divided into 23 clubs in tier 5, 22 in tier 6, and 22 in tier 7),
228 clubs in Southern League/Northern Premier League/Isthmian League (tiers 7-8),
680 clubs in tiers 9 and 10 (that contain 17 different leagues and 34 divisions),
and tier 11 has about 900 clubs and 60 leagues.
And this is just for England (apart from 5 welsh clubs lol)
so put simply, there are a lot.

Fifa World Cup and the just ended UEFA EURO are basically international competitions where countries compete with each other. The format there is a group stage with 4 teams in a group in the same format that was explained in the video (3 points for a win, 1 for a draw) with each team playing the other teams once. Then you get the playoffs where it's a knockout. The FIFA WC and EURO each happen every 4 years with a 2 year offset. So you get the World Cup, then 2 years and you get a EURO then once again 2 years a World Cup.
In the meantime The UEFA champions league and each league is going every year where it's the clubs.
Quick answer for the goalie and the shirts. The goalie has to wear an outfit of a different colour than anyone else on the field. So let's say your team is white, the enemy team is red and the referee is yellow, your shirt cannot be of any of those colours.
As for the rules. The goalie can indeed use his hands to pickup the ball, however this can be done only within the goalkeeper area (the big box in front of the goal), outside of that large box he must play as any other player. There are also small rules about picking up the ball but too complex for now.
The goalie cannot be tackled in the goalie area. Any such action or action that intentionally puts the goalie in danger is typically met with a red card. Basically, the player gets sent off and his team has to play a 10 vs 11

14:01 - That's what I find so special with football leagues as a Canadian watcher that started back in January ish. There are stories of small teams making it to the top flight (the highest league - for England, it's the Premier League) and small teams beating large teams.
15:47 about that, I think it's like a in between. There are definitely much more opportunities in leagues overseas if you're from America, but teams in the MLS are trying to get more home grown talent.

While most cities, towns and even larger villages in the UK tend to have football teams, generally it is just the city based teams that have the resources to get into the more competitive leagues. In theory they could all compete, in reality smaller teams just couldn't afford to pay professional players. Also as long as you can get a working visa you could join a team as a professional player (assuming you have the talent and opportunity).
The Premier league is the top UK based championship that happens every year while the World Cup only happens every 4 years. Also the World cup is an international championship which is separate from all the other championships that consists only of national teams like England, Germany, Italy, etc. I would suggest watching the England matches if you do decide to go through this years world cup as you will be most likely to get commentary in English as well as having a few less confusing names being mentioned.

They can go anywhere on the pitch but can only touch the ball with their hands/arms within the penalty box - that's the big rectangle in front of the goal. "Can an American football player play in Europe?" This year Chelsea won the Champions League (Europe's biggest football competition). One of their star players is Christian Pulisic, an American. He earns £3.2m per year. The World Cup happens every 4 years. This is for national teams (like England, Scotland, USA etc), not Club teams (eg Chelsea, Man Utd etc). Goalies are the only players who are allowed to handle the ball in their own goal areas - hence they wear different coloured shirts to their team mates so the referee can quickly identify them. Refs will award the other team a penalty if anyone other than the goalie handles the ball.

When he was talking about signing kids and then selling them later, he's talking about academies, over here we don't have secondary school or university football in the way you guys do for your sports, or atleast they aren't as professional or important as yours. Instead we have academies, which is where professional and semi professional teams will not only have their senior teams but also youth teams for each age group, usually from about under 9s to under 23s (which is usually just a reserve team).
These academies find the best young players they can and train them until they're either old enough and good enough for the first team, or not good enough and too old to ever be good enough, if they're good enough they'll either be started or loaned out or sometimes poached by bigger clubs, if they aren't good enough, they might be released for free or sold to a smaller club.
This system means that young talents get the professional coaching they need and provides a source of income for smaller clubs, take carlisle united for example, they allowed Manchester United to take their 14 year old youth keeper dean henderson for free on the condition that he have many bonuses in his contract. Now he's a good goalkeeper for man united and carlisle united get paid every time he plays for man united, and if man united ever sell him carlisle will be paid 20% of what they sell him for. And this isn't even carlisle's only example of this either, there's also players such as jarrad branthwaite, who was sold to Everton on a relatively low fee, but has similair clauses in his contract.

The bigger rectangle is where the goalkeeper is allowed to touch the ball with their hands. If they go outside those rectangles, they become just another player and have to follow the same rules.
Also, if the defending team fouls the attacking team inside the bigger rectangle, the attacking team gets a penalty kick 11 meters from the goal with nobody but the goalkeeper allowed to defend.

A goalie can only use his hands in the small square in front of his goal. Tackle a goaly or even another player inside the bigger square in front of a goal is critical. Usually when a foul is done the opposing team gets the ball and can continue playing from the spot where the foul happend. But if a foul is done inside the critical zone result in a penalty. That means the ball is placed 11m in front of the goal and a player can kick it and no other player exept the goalie is allowed to interfere with that shot. But when the foul is made just a inch outside the zone, defending players can position themselfe between the kicking player and the goal.

When it comes to clubs from the lower leagues that can surprise you. In Poland, we have a team like Raków Częstochowa. Even 10 years ago, they played in the 3rd level of the game and they were an average there. Last season they became the vice-champion of Poland and won the Polish Cup. Another such team is Bruk-Bet Termalica Nieciecza. Team from a village with 700 inhabitants. 20 years ago they played in level 6, today they are playing in Ekstraklasa (level 1)

You pass it around in your own half to retain possession, to tire the opposition who need to constantly readjust, the pull the opponent’s defence out of shape and to probe for an opening. Basically they’re waiting for their opponents to mess up and/or one of your teammates to make a move.

In Brazil we have the same leagues with different names, but the main league of Brazil has 20 teams and the winner is the one that has more points, the last 4 are relegated to the 2nd division. The winners (4-5 first) are rewarded to join the continental competition. It is pretty the same in Europe.

About "selling player" - the process is as follows - player has an contract with the current club but wants to change club and there is a new club that would be interested in him. The new club negotiates with the old club a price for agreeing to terminate the contract with the player. Next the player agrees the terms of the new contract with the new club. All this can not happen without the consent of the player.

  • @miguelabreucoelho
    @miguelabreucoelho 2 роки тому +1

15:34 Yes, you can. Players can be sold and sign with any team in any country in the world. Transfer fees really vary a lot, depends on the quality of the player, how much money a club has/is willing to spend and how much can they offer to a player for salary (nowadays, a team can pay another team from 15 to 40 million $ for a good player, a great one can go up to 80 and some superstars today have been sold for 100+).
16:40 not exactly. The relegated teams are decided based on the final league standings. When all the games have been played, you have your champion and then the 3 teams on the bottom of the table (the ones who finished 18th, 19th and 20th, in a 20 team league of course) drop down to the league below and have to play there the next season. At the same time, the opposite happens too: the teams that finished in the top 3 spots in the lower leagues climb to the one above and get to play there for the next season.

The Euro and the world cup are only for national teams, the other once are for clubs, they can be from mixed nationality to some extend.
Like tonight the Danish national team play the English national team, but a lot of the Danish players are also playing for English clubs, and are part of champions league for English clubs.
This also means team mates on national teams, tend to all be opponents in club football.

Possession football is good at wearing out your opponent, chasing the ball takes more energy than keeping it. That's why you'll see defenders just passing it between each other, the opposing attacking players will be pressing to get it back, kinda like forechecking in hockey, if the defence play right the attackers wont have the energy to do anything with it when they do get it, while they are doing that they are also looking to exploit the space left by the midfielders who may have also moved out of position to pressure the ball carrier. For the team trying to get the ball back, pressure is essential! You cannot allow the team in possession too much time to think, that constant pressure will eventually cause them to make a mistake... there is soooooo much strategy involved in footy, it really is a thinking person's game.

basically scouts will look for young players (kids and early teens) who show potential and sign them to their academy teams for them to train and develop as players. It’s part time and they still go to school and stuff and get an education. They’re not really paid (or paid very little) until they are old enough to turn professional (depending on the laws of the nation they’re playing in) and earn a weekly wage.

Just a point on the passing back and forth in defence- Sometimes you do this in order to 'bring the other team on'. Which means basically you draw them out of their 'deep' defence positions to 'press' the ball leaving space for your team to exploit. Oh and the World cup is played not between clubs but between nations. So if you play for Liverpool but are an American you would play for the American national team at the World Cup.
