After four days of racing, and plenty of ups and downs, it’s time for the infamous Wheeler stage. We’ll be climbing up to over 12,000 feet (3658 m) of elevation, not once but twice, in only 25 miles (40 km). This means hike-a-bike - and a lot of it.
Despite being the shortest stage in terms of mileage, this may very well be the hardest - a physical challenge yes, but even more so a test of mental fortitude.

Leave it to Macky to give his competition, during the race, tips on how to hike faster. The nicest man in professional sports!
Dude is a saint!
Macky: “really gotta be careful here”
Proceeds to descend like a 1960s test pilot
Macky is absurdly practical
This is the best racing series I've ever seen. Keep em coming.
Macky's puddle dodging around 21 minutes had me hootin! Pretty sure you soaked that hiker in the last puddle. So fun to watch not only the racing but the behind the scenes, amazing content as always!
Y'all are total beasts. I'm so inspired watching these videos. You make me want to be a better cyclist, and your continuous just breathing hard and working hard and putting so much power in. It's mind-blowing to me. Y'all are awesome. I've been a subscriber for like 4 years now and these are just the best of the best videos
My 12 year old son and me rode the Peaks trail this summer. We watched the two of you racing the trail, he was so excited. Thank you for the effort to wear ca s to record your racing, not something I would have done in y racing days, if the tech was available. Thank you thank you, so fun to watch.
Great day you two. Macky, epic as always. Great finish against super stiff competition. Syd, your riding really impresses me more and more each time you ride. You're really not far off the leaders in these races. Just keep building and the winning will happen. Proud of you both. Go get em!!! 👍💪👊
After the arrow identifies Macky’s bottle cap I keep waiting for the pointing out Syd’s braid. You guys rock! I can’t imagine riding those courses!
Famous quote from Mike Tyson:
“Everyone has a plan till they get punched in the face”. Hang in there Syd. When I start seeing the world through sparkly glasses I’ve got a good endorphin kick going…
These race videos are so damn good. And the new map graphic is a nice touch
Macky, your bike is perfectly speced for our Michigan trails, especially the ones further north like Potowatami, Stoney Creek, and maybe Boyne Highlands! I'm gonna need to copy this exact spec, if you don't mind. 😆
Awesome racing & love the climbing map team colors, very cool. Rock on!
Can’t believe you did those descents on Aspens. Also, climbing and talking at 12k feet is amazing.
Those weeds remind me of what it was like up on Pipeline above SLC about 30 yrs ago. I was running downhill and met someone coming up in one of those blind curves. We slammed together, I’m 6’4”, I broke my nose on his helmet. We both got up and rode off. Funny, first guy behind one of us looks at my bike and says “dude, your front wheel is OK”…😂
Perseverance comes in a lot of flavors. Syd has one, so does Macy. Way to go.
Really hope you've got your nutrition worked out for Marji. Good luck this weekend. Enjoy the Yoop
I recommend some charcoal for your nausea. It really works. Yes, that same blackened stuff that you get when you burn wood will help you stop feeling nauseous. Totally serious. They sell charcoal tablets, or you can buy charcoal powder and capsulize it yourself. You don't need a lot. One or two little pill-size capsules and some water. You'll be feeling better in no time.
Macky, you were crushin the climbs in this stage. Well done
You guys are like super heroes. I road Garden of the Gods at 6400 ft. Looked like Arnold on Mars. Lol. Awesome!
keeping quiet when riders in front, get off their bikes but not out of the way... I need to learn...thanks for all your videos, I try to be more awesome 😁
I started MTBing recently and have loved y’all’s content. Keep it up!
Getting you and your ride to the finish in one piece. Great job as always!
17:05 Nice to soak up that view while descending! 🍻
Outstanding job by the both of you. Your trail courtesy is exemplary. I think the race organizers should be able to ride the race route. It is utterly ridiculous to expect people to ride this route.
That was truly epic. Well done to both of you. Amazing that you were doing as well at the end Syd as you did without eating. I'm still thinking that some fats for fuel might help. My opinion, not an established fact.
I don't feel so bad about some of our rocky trails here in South Africa when I see what you guys deal with!
You guys put my epics to shame hahaha 😂youre both such an inspiration. Stoked for you both!!
Loving the elevation pop ups, that would have been sick on the Megavalance video
Great job!! It’s gotta feel good. Awesome progress.
I continue to be amazed by the chunk the two of you handle with xc bikes. I get the desire for lightweight but do you ever wish for a more slack fork? Are the competitors running similar rigs?
Agreed, I was wondering why not opt for the Delano Peak since some sections of the trail look pretty gnarly. DP may be a bit heavier but I'd think time could be made up by faster descents.
Yes, pretty much everyone in the pro field is on an xc bike! There was nothing on this course where we felt like we needed more suspension or slacker geo (the signal peak is pretty progressive for an XC bike and rides great through rough stuff). If we were going to take a weight penalty it would be with tires, but even that isn't worth it with this much climbing. For the record, I love my Delano peak and it would be fun on these trails, but it's a full 6lbs heavier than my signal, and it would be pretty much impossible to offset that on these descents.
great job on this stage both of you!
Bet you were happy not to be on a Single speed this time! Beast mode on the climbs! Freaking impressive
Great video! Thanks for sharing the experience. It truly looks like a brutal day
Great work
21:02 that river crossing was epic😂
Top job guys.
You both are so damn inspiring! Crazy awesome job today, you both seemed really focused and engaged and rode super well despite all the challenges this race throws at you. Well done!!! ❤🎉🎉🎉
Crazy course!
Love the music chosen
Like I always say, you guys have the best pit crew in the business 👍
True story!
Way to just have some fun on day 5.
Wish I had my early 20s body to see how I would do on these courses. Oh to be young again!
Sid has the ponytail that's how you tell them apart
Nice, I would be stoked to have a nice butterfly person cheering me on at the top.
Given all of the steep climbs would you have liked the few added gears by running a 2 up?
could the nausea be altitude sickness?..you guys went from 7300 ft to 9600ft and then at the top of the mountain at almost 13000 ft?...I dunno Im just thinking out loud...those XTR brakes are droolable...yes I made up a word.
We both ended up sick after the race so I do think we had a bug, but I'm guessing the attitude accentuated the nausea. A lot of people were sick so I think something was being passed around the race.
Looks like Mackey passed Chadd (bearded dude heading opposite direction).
Sickness in the morning......could it be....?😊
Nope
@@sydandmacky 🤣
Awww sorry 💗
Does the Breck Epic always coincide with the CTR? Hoping to do the triple crown next year, but would also love to do this…
Correction: "Brutal" doesn't cover it. Brutal times 10! Tomorrow will be Brutally Brutal times 20.
How are you pedaling through all those tall rocks w/o pedal strikes?
You time your pedals.
So, I noticed thats the second time youve mentioned long steps when walking - can i ask how does that help?
The increased distance from longer steps more than makes up for the slightly slower walking cadence and overall you hike faster.
@@sydandmacky thanks! 🙏
I noticed there was some cycling in that hiking race. Is that cheating to ride a bike? 😂
Have you ever thought about using OTC oxygen . Just curious.
Pretty sure that would be a doping violation 😂
If you're under 40, it takes 36 hours to recovery from a hard effort. These athletes are losing muscle every day. I'd be so Sore!
Morning sickness? enquiring minds want to know?
Nope
Syd’s daily morning nausea…
I know right? It’s almost like she is participating in an event where she puts out monumental efforts daily, under a ton of pressure, while facing a daunting challenge!
@@SEZ66 Well, yeah. But she's a pro at that. Not saying she can't have an off day/race, but when my wife woke up with crazy nausea everyday for a week we had a little something else going on.
@@codytestroet3774 first, they have stated repeatedly through this series that this is one of the hardest events she has ever done. Second, she has had nausea issues are previous big events. But also, there are many causes of nausea in these types of events and it is not our place to make assumptions about whether or not someone is pregnant as it isn’t our business. But most of all, they have stated elsewhere in the comments section that she is not pregnant and that they think some sort of bug was likely a contributor to her feeling sick.
@@SEZ66thank you for being the only person in this comment section who seems to be aware that nausea can be caused by things other than pregnancy 😂😂
@@sydandmackyI couldn’t believe some of the comments honestly. But yeah, I’m a father of a 5yr old, and I, my wife, and my daughter all mountain bike. We love your videos!
Morning sickness 🙅
Yep, it’s a boy.
Nope no babies for us 🙅♂️
what happened to Riley amos?
He was heading to Europe in a week so decide to drop out because he didn't want to get too fatigued.
Trying to watch the video and every few minutes a Trump advertisement pops up! Annoying as hell.
Unfortunately we have no control over what ads appear as they are customized by UA-cam for the viewer.
Just figured out we can block political ads from showing on our videos, so you shouldn't get any more now!
@@sydandmacky I know it's not your fault. It doesn't help I live in a swing state where there are non-stop political ads from both parties. Like I need convincing!
Bless you for blocking! I try to keep YT my politics free space, not easy…. Great rides btw, love the no quit, stay positive ethos.
Syd are you pregnant?😅
Nope
3:42 SL means that the post has no inbetween positions. This would be soo bothering on a technical, but mellow trail for me.
@22:20 translation "I'm a badass rider" lol
Yeah, he was really hoping she'd say "yes, I ride this all the time, that's why I caught you so easily" 😂
I see you have advil in your side table of your bed, do you take after riding or before a ride when you are tired because you have multiple days of riding? I sometimes use it before a ride 200mg and keep my legs for about 2.5 hours whit not so much pain
