I love this series so far. I’m worried about the last book Leviathan. A series finale is tough to really get right. I’m crossing my fingers that McCammon was able to give a great ending to the series.

Until last week, I hadn’t read any McCammon books for over 30 years. I loved all the early classic stuff but stopped before Boy’s Life. Well, I finished Boy’s Life a few days ago and remembered how great a writer he is, so although, I too don’t have a huge interest in the Matthew Corbett era, I’m looking forward to starting Speaks the Nightbird. I’ve also had The Border and The Five arrive in the mail today, so it’ll be a McCammon-heavy autumn/winter for me! Hope you’re well, Tim.

Thanks for the good wishes! I have found that Robert McCammon has continued improving as a writer and storyteller throughout his career, where others seem to drop off over time.
Besides the Corbett series, another book that didn’t sound good until I read it was Gone South. The premise was a turn-off for me, but the book ended up being so good! It was another nice surprise.

    Very cool.
Only was aware of Swan Song (have yet to read it)
I think Ill start this series first, it sounds awesome.
Getting a kick out of American historical fiction lately.

Well if American Historical Fiction is interesting for you, I think this series is perfect. The series is full of great characters, settings, and writing.

Finally have all of his Matthew Corbett books and finished Speaks The Nightbird a couple of weeks ago I think. Taking a break to read some other books before launching into the next in the series.

I did the same thing. Speaks is a big book. It was a while before I went for book 2, Queen of Bedlam. It’s different, and fabulous. The story progresses considerably in Queen.

@@itsterrific oops. I meant I finished Bedlam. I need more coffee! Yes, Queen was great.

Oh, neat! Queen was a great one! Mister Slaughter goes darker. Get ready!

I'm interested in giving the series a try. Is it important to read the series in order or is there another good entry point? It seems like the first two books are a bit harder to find, at least in hardcover.

It’s a great series. I strongly recommend reading the series in order. Each book builds on the last, and there is a lot of character development as Matthew gains experience, and relationships develop.
