Thanks for sharinf. Im 44 now and have trouble with portion control and was getting rather chubby. Counting calories is just isnt my thing, I just love to munch on something in from of the telly. So I knew all these diets are just not for me. I cut out all refined suger years ago and that really helped, and dont miss them anyways. Basically the only things I drink now are water, tea and coffee. I do drink alcohol sometimes but only once every two weeks, maybe once a month at most really, its already to have a "night" once in a while, as long as its not two times a week. Also I started cooking more of my own meals so less fat, salt and God knows what additives. Im also savng a lot of money that way so thats another bonus. And being Dutch I already cycled a alot so just kept doing that.
And yeah, I am losing weight. Not as dramatic as you, I wish haha, but I did do 180 km in 3 days around the Markermeer couple of weeks ago, on a city bike mind you, and managed that without too many problems. So you know, instead of turning everything around I just made some small lifestyle changes here and there and that seems to do the job for now. But cycling is instrumental in that because when that bike is your primary mode of transportation, you are going to get your exercise in without really thinking about it. Even if its just 20 minutes, like just using it for doing groceries, it still is a whole lot better than nothing at all.
Your story is much like mine, doctor said I wouldnt see 30, Im 55 now cycling saved me, well done Richard.
Cycling saved me in a way, too. I had been suffering from severe, chronic headaches for over 30 years. Four years ago, I was 61 years old at the time, my husband and I bought new bicycles and started cycling regularly. I came to realise that going up a steep hill (1.2 km, average 17 %) in our neighbourhood took away my headaches. The first year I did the hill almost daily and it was very hard work, but absolutely worth the effort. Now I don't have to do it so often anymore which I am grateful for. I love your story and hope that many more people will discover the miracles cycling can do to your health, not only physically but also mentally.
Thanks for sharing your own personal story with us Richard. You are a real blessing in helping to encourage others to get outdoors and exercise. Take care.
Good grief Richard, you looked like Katie Kookaburra! Top video, again👍
Great video. The benefits of cycling can’t be underestimated. It’s good for the soul. 👍
I weighed about 230+ lbs too. Haven't yet lost as much weight as you have but I hope to someday.
Great vid Richard, thank you for sharing 😊
Quality video, rings true for many a cyclist.
Gudonya Richard.
Keep on keeping on.
I don't have any close friends - partly my nature, partly circumstance, but I have lots of acquaintances from my cycle and running clubs. Have great fun riding with a group of guys on Sunday mornings - stopping for coffee cake and a chat. Keeps me sane and stops me from being too isolated - my default position
We sound alike.
Saved mine too...but need to get back on it
please give metric. nobody outside the UK will know what a stone is. And you have a good story.
I like your video's, thank you for bringing them.
Well said Richard.
Wow Richard …what a powerful story. You should use that as a mentoring philosophy and role, seriously because what you did and are continuing to doing is so strong and positive that you should be an inspirational speaker that offers opportunities and positiveness on so many fronts.
I’m like you.
I choose to either walk or cycle alone. Especially cycling it doesn’t bother me because on that day to day journey you meet so many like minded people. I’m not adverse to conversations but I like conversing with different people as I assume you do.
I love my cycling and at 63 after over 300000 miles from being so small I will continue to do so as I’m sure you will.
Thank you for your honesty and seriously you need to spread the positivity that you embellish.
On a final point though, I would never ever do a piece to camera whilst cycling down the A18 from Stone Lodge Cattery you are one brave brother…too many idiots on that road mate.
Take care and keep posting…
R
Thanks Ron for your kind words. I am not sure however that I would have the confidence to stand in front of a room of people and share my experiences - never say never though with enough prep maybe just me I could be an inspirational speaker but for now though I'll "speak" through UA-cam!
As for the A18, thanks for your concern, however the camera went off as I criss-crossed the A18 to join high-level banks and headed down Idle Bank and on to Epworth.
I try and do a mini bike ride everyday to get off the computer, just wish uk weather was better. I like cycling around chester and Rhyl sea front, both nice days out, my bad habit is I will stop for the take away food, so not losing much weight but like you said it can help in other way too. To try and get fit I started taking up walking trail and visiting castles that can be just as fun. Aim is to do snowdon in a years time.
Work on IT myself and WFH 3 days a week. On those days I really have to force myself out the door on break/lunch just to get away from the screen. Walking - along - can work wonders for your health. Yeah, Snowdon, been once - it was Pea Soup when I went up there and that was at the height of Summer lol
Good stuff. Cycled since I was 13 years old, slackened off 20s and 30s with “life”, got back into it post 40s and love it. My wife also comes along on a Sunday which slows me down and makes me stop for coffee! Recently diagnosed with type 1 diabetes so now working out how to manage food, blood sugar and cycling. Got a target to get bikepacking again next year, possibly Traws Eryri - hard but why not?? 😊
Yes looks like it could be a lovely route. Nothing wrong with setting a tough target. Gives you something to aim for!
Good honest video, thank you for sharing. I can relate on many levels. Keep grinding 👍
I appreciate it, thank you.
Great vlog. Well done! I'm sure a healthier diet has helped you recover from your recent injury too. 😊
After a 12 year lay off I think cycling has changed for the worse, they don’t even give you a wave the men in black the boy racers who have never raced the boutique cyclists if you have stopped at the side of the road they don’t ask if everything’s ok. Cycling the new golf with all marketing drivel the bikes are actually heavier than my 2014 TCR by a long way. I love riding my bike but I worry where cycling is going
In my neck of the woods I see my waves and usually get an are you okay if something is wrong. I guess it depends where you ride - when it comes to newbie rides - I just want to see more and more getting on two wheels. Safety in numbers and all that on the roads.
Spot on 👍
Great video Richard. I did PBP as a teenager and am now a member of the kebap eating BMI 30 club. Should I start Deejaying?
Sure, don't rely on it to pay the bills - just for fun!
@@BikepackingAdventures hahaha 😆
What direction is your channel going lifestyle or gravel ??
I certainly have no plans for lifestyle direction, it'll be more of the same adventures on and off-road with wild-camping in the mix.
Will see how it goes then @@BikepackingAdventures
