So you were probably to young to be interested in the game when it originally released huh? I tried finishing the game multiple times, but after losing my save 3 times i just said screw it. Hopefully i'll be able to finish it this time around.
got it in 09, got interested in ff after playing kingdom Hearts and got 12 and 10 at the same time. my brother and I collectively put in over 900 hours into it
100% agree this game was ahead of its time...and loved the political stuggle story, gambit system, expansive world, and real time fighting system. I dust off my ps2 once in a while just to play it.
FF12 was an experiment much like FF6 was, narratively speaking. 6 experimented with not having a main character and a really large cast. 12 experimented with not having a main villain, instead having a large cast of mid tier villains and a lot of political struggle.
What I love most about the game is the different unique areas or regions and dungeons, and just the amount of things there is to do in this game, with the hunt/mark system, especially. They got it right at the beginning of the video when they said this game was ahead of its time. This game could come out today, as a brand new game, and fit right in with today's current games.
Ff12 was so fascinating. I would spend hours glued to the screen looking at the enemy's and esper's lore. The world building was definitely the best! The shakespearean atmosphere set the whole mood of everything being mystic and ancient, with every new area emanating history and worth, a story wrapped in layers of descry and mystery, on the cusp of being there, yet not there, of being tangible yet untouched, of reality and fantasy. I bought the strategy guide when it came out. I loved reading about the monster hunt tips. I thought that was such a cool addition. Got me so hyped for the game

FF12 is probably my favorite FF game of all time. At the young age of 12-13 when my sister moved away to college this was the first game that I was able to play without interruption. To me it was just the evolution of art and how RPGs should be. The story didn't really hit me but I always thought it made sense. At the time I was wrapped up with so many things and never quite finished it. I am forever hyped for this
I read it a couple times! It abruptly ends because I think it got canceled but it was amazing. It didn't follow the game directly but rather gave good backstory.
I am almost always replaying XII, it is my favorite entry in the FF series. To me it is the first main series title since VI that focuses on something other than emotionally damaged protagonists. I love you VII and VIII but Cloud and Squall are too gloomy to deal with. Give me a Zidane and Vaan any day. Basch and Balthier though for me make the game. They are strong male leads without having to be macho, gloomy, or overly happy. Balthier is a leading charisma man and he knows it and Basch is the level headed thinker who does what is needed even if he would rather not. I think my love of XII is why I like XV so much so far. I can see core similarities and all the differences. XV is like the lovechild of XII and VIII with dashes of X scattered here and there. To anyone who has not played XII: Do NOT let any character fall behind the leveling curve. Always have all characters at 50 then pick your three best and build them up to max levels. Is it time consuming? Yes. Will it help you later in the game? YES.
Julieanne Fowler I have to agree.. though FF7 is my favorite...there is always that sense of "we need to have a word with sephy NOW"..key word on the "NOW".."the planet is dying, the planet is dying!"...I mean off the bat, characters are extremist and are not having peace conversations with shinra.. it's attack on slight...the characters wasn't just gloomy but the whole world too...I liked how vann was just taken in by everyone..he isn't the main character but he is because he makes himself soo useful.. It's sort of a adoption story..your not just thrown into the main character cock pit like in FF7..in FF7, it's pretty clear that Cloud is the main character..no ifs or buts about it.
Then we Got Games like FF7 DoC a PS2 Game! Where all you play is Vincent Valentine in a 3th person shooter as an lone wolf emo dude seen throughout the whole game quite cool in fact till he became at one point so powerful that people like Cloud would only slow Vincent down if he even try to help him in the main Fights of that game! Where only Vincent himself became the only one who can really save the planet from its own doom! The ending could have been way more sad as Vincent could of easily Die from that last move of his.. But thank God he's immortal & really doesn't know how to die, would be my one of my main Guess's on why he's still alived at the end of that PS2 game! Or maybe the main reason why he's still alived is because of the Girl who he loves, you know the one who give birth to A Sephiroth! Some say she too might be immortal & just lock herself away inside of a Crystal till the end of time! :(
Julieanne Fowler I totally agree, I really love the more mature and political story, in fact VI and XII are my favorite ones and I too have really enjoyed XV even with its flaws. I guess there really is a strong thematic connection between those for how few people that have played every FF love XV and XII although there are plenty of VI fans.
Totally Agree, love FF IX and XII so much. Dont play FF XV because dont own PS4, but after watch the ending on youtube, I hate it because the character has to die. I hate when the ending is bad (although it is for greater good)...
I really wish Square Enix would flesh out the stories of Ivalice more. I absolutely love the universe and I want more lore around it. I want to see something in Rozarria or something. Ivalice has so much potential for so many great stories after FF12 which is my favorite Final Fantasy
Another fact which some of you may know: The optional in-game boss, Yiazmat was named after Yasumi Matsumoto (YASumi MATsumoto), who abruptly left in the middle of the game's development. In fact, the title of the hunt is "Farewell to a Legend", which quite obviously alludes to this. Also, I don't think it's a coincidence at all that Yiazmat is the single most time-consuming boss to defeat in the entire Final Fantasy franchise, which I find pretty much reflects the tumultuously long development time that Final Fantasy XII had to endure. I can't remember what the exact dialogue was, but even the in-game petitioner of the hunt spoke of Yiazmat quite resentfully. Probably the most epic and insulting inside-joke ever made in a video game.
I actually saw one of the Gabranth helmets on display at a store in Brazil. I never realized there were only 500 units of it. It was crazy expensive too.
Final Fantasy XII is and will always be, one of my favorites. I liked that it focused more on events happening in the world, especially the politics, and while there was romance, it wasn't the key drive for the plot either
Ayoub P FF12 was my first FF game and my second was 13. I sort of liked it but still disliked due to the annoying way the characters always got broken up until the free-roam part and also didn't like the change from any can use anything to forced classes.
haters is everywhere, remember when junction system on FF 8 they hate it, and sphere glyph system on ff X they hate it aswell, and now gambit system they hate it too
the only FF i hate is 8 they changed to much in ways of playing and there was no good way to play unless you had the internet or strategy guide. i like exploring and fighting battles not running away to keep my level low. and the airship and balomb garden moved way to slow in the overworld
Nahid Ahmed Ok, but still, it has the best story of em all, the only one that comes close is 6, and once you get to grips with 15 that’s a brilliant story too.. they’re more mature, not childish like almost every final fantasy story, better storytelling, mature characters, and a more mature storyline, even Vaan, a little boy, is more mature than most final fantasy characters young and old, I prefer that, but I do see why some people would prefer Harry Potter over Lord of the Rings (I don’t really, but you know what I mean).. The battle system was by far the best, how can you say it was slow? It’s the only game other than 15 where you don’t spend 10-15 seconds or more, waiting for a battle to start and finish, then god knows how long on a screen pressing x not caring that you just got 1000 exp and 500 Gil 😐 anyone who says the battle system in 12 isn’t the best (apart from maybe XV) is a straight up liar, there’s no way anyone can prefer random encounters over real time, out in the field encounters, no way, it’s an ATB system, with settings to make it slower or faster, and fast was pretty fast, no different from 6,7,9,10-2 and whatever else, it’s just out in the field, you cannot bash it, you’re clutching at straws with that one, if you think the story is mediocre then you think the story is mediocre, buts its much better than childish characters acting like children every 10 mins when they’re meant to be big tough men saving the world from a childish super villain, which is the majority of final fantasy games, I love final fantasy games, my favourite is 10, but I’m not gonna sit here saying 12 isn’t a better game when I know it is, by far

And about Vaan being the main character, he’s clearly not the main character, there is no real MAIN character in 12, just like in 6, he’s just a guy on the sidelines who’s perspective you get to see the game from, you (the player) learn about the world with him and that’s why he’s the face of the game, it’s his eyes you see it through, if anything, Ashe is the real main character, they could have easily made Penelo the face of the game instead, but they used Vaan, but just because he’s the face of it doesn’t mean he’s meant to be the main character in it, you don’t NEED a main character

The FFXII summons are actually based on the Lucavi, the main antagonists of FFT. They didn't become summons until FFTA and FFTA2, and even then they were summoned using special items rather than the Summoner class.
Well, he still is the lead, kinda, though Balthier steal the show from him from time to time, and before you say Vaan, he is just a character to get the player to the real heroes of the game, and sticks with them with his GF.
Fact 1: Balthier is the best FF character. I always liked FFXII but I didn't play it until years later. I recently beat Zodiac Age and it was even better.
I agree! I think one of the reason is thanks to Gideon Emery's awesome voice. Check out his game voice acting works, I'm sure you'll find other characters that you love there.
I never played Final Fantasy until a year ago. I beat 10 and I'm on the palace mission on 12. I can't believe I never played these games! They're amazing and they would be great anime movies! I can definitely say 10 and Star Wars Kotor 1 and 2 are my favorite games of all time. 12 is looking better than 10 so far to me but we will see after I beat it. We're so lucky to be born in this era.
I remember how b-hurt everyone was about how automated the Gambits system was when (i) you 100% set it to how you want it as if you were manually controlling them (ii) you can still 100% manually control them by turning Gambits off ... and then SE thought to take away control of party members entirely with XIII and somewhat still with XV (but this is an action-RPG so semi-understandable)
I agree - the Gambit system was great, and I would like to see it developed further and appear in other games with only 1 controllable party member. The biggest complaints I had were that a) Gambits were treated like collectibles (which IZJS fixes), and b) scripts were sometimes too simple. Much better than in FF13 where you had practically no control over 2/3 of your party!
It's been so long since I played 12. But I remember liking the Gambit system. I set up my party to do the things I would have to pause and select anyway. And between actions I was overseeing them, and reselecting skills for more precise encounters. It was automated, but I was still in ultimate control. And I can recall more of the story of 12 than I can of 13, despite an at least 5 year handicap (though still not much of either).
if they made it more like that it would basically be just choosing jobs for half the game. then after u start unlocking more the game becomes a huge bore with 6 re-skinned characters that all do the same stuff
As a token defender of 13, it's not fair to leave the description of battle with "taking control of party members away." The battle system of 13 is about management and macro-scale flow rather than the selection of individual skills. You're not battling the monster so much as you're battling the decaying buff timers, debuff timers, and chain gauge. All while keeping HP high with Sentinels and Medics. FF13-2 was balanced much better, but the idea behind the battle system of FF13(-2) is, to me, the most clever gameplay element to come out of a main-series Final Fantasy game.
The ATB is too fast to control all 3. wtf im talking about 99% of battle time is us mashing the auto-battle command... 13 series is about how fast you can shift between paradigms, lol. its understandable, 13-1 is history and characters intro, just basic training and patience gauging. 13-2 is matching your timing with AI practice. finally the final exam in final fantasy- lightning return, when you must all utilize the basic and learn to perfect timing the guard command. it is because we all complaining about AI do all the job, they make it completely manual up to upgrading the spells and the skills, joke on us, the game is very hard to play, and not possible to 100% without at least 500 hours of playing. i replay the lightning return 5 times, i still cant beat Bhunibelze at hard mode, let alone Aeronite and Ereshkigal. its funny that most use spell in the game is fking POISON. if you said the game is easy, but all you do is spam buster sword garb, fuck you.
I played this game so much back on the ps2 I plan to get the strategy guide for this since most of the post game quests are so complicated especially for the summons can't wait to do all the hunts again
XII has always been my favorite. I remember in high school picking up the steelbook collector's edition. Still have it today and I still have my unopened Japanese import copy. Less than two weeks to go!
I loved FFXII. The gambits system wasn't hard for me to use. And mostly because SEXY Viera! I loved the lore of the Viera. The green word, being very hostile of outsiders & those who choose to leave being outcast like Fran, that is a story by itself. Fran also slowly lost her connection to her home the longer she was away i.e. not being able to hear the green word. It also doesnt hurt that Viera are HOT! 😍
Isn't Zodiark related to the Serpentarius constellation? Supposedly that is the 13rd zodiac sign. It is definitely that, you can even steal a Serpentarius from him, as you can steal an Aries Gem from Belias, for instance.
There's a reason why this game still my favorite game of all times since the day I played it in my 12yo (I'm 24, funny that I decided to play again after TWELVE years).
I love that its hard! They have said that they are going to make the zodiac age easier for people however so that should be good to get more casual players! I'm not disappointed because there is going to be a new game plus mode where you don't level up at all.
As someone who played the International Version I can say you that is almost the same except for the job system and that you dont have to be careful with the chest because the Zodiac Spear is now accesible not matter what :U
That's good to hear that's its close in difficulty to the original! I'm already strategizing on what jobs to pick! Did it irritate you that half the weapons now are useless (the jobs you don't pick) I don't think I'll add a machinist but I love the Foamalhalt because it gives low level party members a way to contribute to damage. Also I won't be adding a Ulan because my tanks will be a Knight and Samurai. That means no one can use the Zodiac Spear :(
Awesome video! FF12 never gets the recognition it deserves its my favorite game of all time and IMO its one of the best RPGs of all time and deserves to be mentioned with FF6, Chrono Trigger, Paper Mario and the rest of the greats.
XII is my favorite final fantasy, but only since I revisited it half a decade after release. When it came out it just didn't click for whatever reason. I love how it follows a whole group of protagonists' stories like VI did, and I love the larger political narrative you are just a part of. Additionally the game is gorgeous. I just played a fan translation of IZJS last year and it was amazing when upscaled on an emulator. IZJS removed the main issue with the game: The sameness of characters. (Though it has the odd quirk of making characters best at the jobs you'd expect them to be worst at because of caps) I'll even defend Vaan. He doesn't have the most central role in the events of the story, but he acts as a foil to many of the characters throughout the story and pushes their development. His own progression as a character traces Rabanastre's recovery, his story about learning to let go of the cycle of war and retribution is one of the defining lessons of the game.
The intro cinematic and theme are so good. Like crack for your ear and eyes. The judges walking in the desert is so badass... I was bummed they removed it for ZA....
It’s crazy how you made this video 7+ years ago and I’m finally playing FF12 for the first time at 29 years old. On my switch, at that! What a time to be alive 😂
12 was such a complete game, there was just so much stuff to do, you really got your moneys worth with this one. I put more hours into this game than any other FF. I wont be playing the remake because of this, i'm not spending a whole day farming one monster or chest to get the rare drop, not to mention fighting Zodiarch again. It's my 2nd favorite FF after 6 and for those who have never played it, you are in for a real treat.
Ahhh will never forget the times back in 06/07 where I’ll go on UA-cam, watch raypinot’s videos of RE4 and then search for how to obtain rare weapons from enemies on ffxii..I’m looking at you Yagyu Darkblade..
FF XII is also the first I know of that has a battle engine that allows characters to run around the battle area in between active moments. What I mean is as follows: There's an action bar that must fill before a battle action such as attack, spell cast, etc. can be performed. during the time it is filling for a particular character, the character can run around the battle area to avoid attacks by the enemies. What's more, this battle engine also allows for automatic activity of characters that are not under direct control, and you can dictate what those characters are able to do during that time. As with most FF games, you can switch your manual control to any playable character that is in the battle. These are features that make this one of the best Final Fantasy Games.

You made a mistatement The summons in FFXII are NOT base don summons in Tactics. They are based on enemies/bosses in Tactics and summon-like beings in Tactics Advance. Summoners still summon the normal summons like Shiva, Ifrit, and Ramuh in Tactics and Tactics Advance.
Screw what anyone says, FFXII is my hands down favorite. As much as I enjoyed the more common "best FF" choices like 4, 6 and 7 they paled in comparison to how much I enjoyed FFXII. Hell, I bought the Japanese ZJS version so I could legally play my english version fanpatch. FFXII was a beautiful mix of what I liked about the older games while joining the more modern era of game mechanics. There are only two RPGs I hold in higher regard and both are pretty much undisputed gems: Planescape Torment and The Witcher 3.

in FF14 they made it seem like FFT was before FF12, with Rabanastre being build over a FFT city and The Lighthouse of Ridorna built over the city of Goug
Noctis was actually released as a character in Puzzle and Dragons a few weeks before FFXV was released. And I'm actually playing the english translation patch for FFXII international via PCSX2, and if the new release is a true carry over of everything... it's MUCH easier than the original.... Not needing to zone or do anything special with my gambits to beat yiazmat (you know, the guy with 50 million HP) at an average party level of 64ish easy.
XII was a funny one for me. My first FF was X and I loved it. I was so excited when XII was released. I played it for a few hours, didn't understand the gambit system and found the open world strange. I stopped playing and put it on the shelf. Fast forward about a year, get very drunk, started it again and it all made sense. Now it's my 2nd favourite behind X. You never forget your first love.

I'd like to point out something I've noticed about the summons, many of them actually resemble final bosses in previous final fantasies. Examples being the Chaos summon looks identical to Chaos from final fantasy 1 (yes their names are even the same), Ultima looks similar to the emperor's final form in final fantasy 2, Zeromus being from final fantasy 4 (again identical names), Who else caught on to those things?
8:58 where did this screenshot come from if the original game is only available on the PS2? These look like HD graphics although the font is the one used in the original game and from what I've seen the zodiac age uses new fonts
I wish they release another game with same world and battle system since ivalice universe is so huge and sophisticated. I really want spin off Balthier as main protagonist
I played the PS2 PAL version of Final Fantasy XII during release, (my favourite entry in the series) but stopped when I reached the final boss for some reason. I think that deep down in my mind I did not want the game to end. I have such an urge to do a complete playthrough of the PS4 version of The Zodiac Age, but since Final Fantasy XVI does release in about 1 month, I will play through it after I fully complete Final Fantasy XVI.
It's funny how many people before said that this was the worst FF game and now everyone just says that it was good and ahead of the time, while I liked it back then
I've always preferred the theory that the end of FFTA caused the rest of the series, placing it first in the timeline. The Ivalice in FFTA doesn't fit with XII and the other games, and it would make sense if Marshe had a subconscious wish to keep his friends alive, and so the grimoire creates that new Ivalice when he destroys the old one. We then visit the new Ivalice as Luso through the grimoire in A2 (which is after XII and RW). It's why Montblanc appears in XII using a different clan name and there are races not present in FFTA.
11: Originally Basch was planned to be the main character. But because square felt the japanese audience wouldn't like him since he was "too manly" they came up with Vaan.
I am currently replaying the remaster ver. on the PS4 and I have no problem with the zodiac job system. I had first played the game when I was about 14, but didn't finish it because I didn't quite understand the mature political plot going on and didn't really know how to handle my gambits well, which are crucial to beating the game. Now in my 20s, I just can't help but appreciate this game much more. As a kid I liked it a lot but just couldn't understand much. Now it's very nostalgic but still new to me since I am finally able to enjoy the story and the battle system with more ease. I am grateful this game exists!
I love this this game for how much it achieved because it made it clear how much more development is needed. Ivalice had airships and guns but no roads, canals, and inns to accommodate commerce. I'd go insane going from town to town without any break. Maybe a system with long term stamina and short term stamina would address It. There is weather variation in the country but not in the cities. There is no day and night variation. There are no farms. How do people eat and how are cities possible without them? Ivalice looks like a backward world. A system using piercing / edged / blunt types of damage and a proximity sphere for targeting range like Vagrant Story would exploit the properties of each class of weapons. Short term stamina could exploit the properties of different classes of armor and shields. Also it's a small team of 6 against the Arcadian army and giant monsters. Stealth tactics would be the only way to survive. But maybe its too much to ask for something like MGSV (this ain't perfect either). A Final Fantasy, Star Ocean, Tales, or YS that integrated these aspects would be amazing.
I used to get verbally beat down when I said XII was my favorite Final Fantasy Now...well, now I still get verbally beat down, but a few of my like-minded brethren will speak up in agreement. Really cannot wait to revisit this entry! Already got my Collector's Edition preordered!
Loved XII since it came out while others, including my friends, were saying it was boring. I always thought Final Fantasy should have stuck with Ivalice instead of going the route it took with 13 and onward. When I think Final Fantasy, I think fantasy setting like Ivalice, IX, and VI. The steampunk/future stuff doesn’t really feel right for the series. Either way, can’t wait to see what they’ll do for 16.
I actually wished they would retexture the game and all to make it look really new instead of just a graphics bump. It's a pity it's not a memorable FF for many people but IMO, it's one of the best FF storywise and character development, and a lot of the game is really nice.
Fun fact: if Astrology had updated its system to account for stellar drift/universal expansion, Ophiuchus would have been the 13th Zodiac. This is why the constellation has a Zodiac Stone in FFTactics and Zodiark is aligned with it here in 12.

What I love most about the game is the different unique areas or regions and dungeons, and just the amount of things there is to do in this game, with the hunt/mark system, especially. They got it right at the beginning of the video when they said this game was ahead of its time. This game could come out today, as a brand new game, and fit right in with today's current games.

The world building was definitely the best!
The shakespearean atmosphere set the whole mood of everything being mystic and ancient, with every new area emanating history and worth, a story wrapped in layers of descry and mystery, on the cusp of being there, yet not there, of being tangible yet untouched, of reality and fantasy.

FF12 is probably my favorite FF game of all time. At the young age of 12-13 when my sister moved away to college this was the first game that I was able to play without interruption. To me it was just the evolution of art and how RPGs should be. The story didn't really hit me but I always thought it made sense. At the time I was wrapped up with so many things and never quite finished it. I am forever hyped for this

I am almost always replaying XII, it is my favorite entry in the FF series. To me it is the first main series title since VI that focuses on something other than emotionally damaged protagonists. I love you VII and VIII but Cloud and Squall are too gloomy to deal with. Give me a Zidane and Vaan any day. Basch and Balthier though for me make the game. They are strong male leads without having to be macho, gloomy, or overly happy. Balthier is a leading charisma man and he knows it and Basch is the level headed thinker who does what is needed even if he would rather not.
I think my love of XII is why I like XV so much so far. I can see core similarities and all the differences. XV is like the lovechild of XII and VIII with dashes of X scattered here and there.
To anyone who has not played XII: Do NOT let any character fall behind the leveling curve. Always have all characters at 50 then pick your three best and build them up to max levels. Is it time consuming? Yes. Will it help you later in the game? YES.
Julieanne Fowler I have to agree.. though FF7 is my favorite...there is always that sense of "we need to have a word with sephy NOW"..key word on the "NOW".."the planet is dying, the planet is dying!"...I mean off the bat, characters are extremist and are not having peace conversations with shinra.. it's attack on slight...the characters wasn't just gloomy but the whole world too...I liked how vann was just taken in by everyone..he isn't the main character but he is because he makes himself soo useful.. It's sort of a adoption story..your not just thrown into the main character cock pit like in FF7..in FF7, it's pretty clear that Cloud is the main character..no ifs or buts about it.
Then we Got Games like FF7 DoC a PS2 Game! Where all you play is Vincent Valentine in a 3th person shooter as an lone wolf emo dude seen throughout the whole game quite cool in fact till he became at one point so powerful that people like Cloud would only slow Vincent down if he even try to help him in the main Fights of that game! Where only Vincent himself became the only one who can really save the planet from its own doom! The ending could have been way more sad as Vincent could of easily Die from that last move of his.. But thank God he's immortal & really doesn't know how to die, would be my one of my main Guess's on why he's still alived at the end of that PS2 game! Or maybe the main reason why he's still alived is because of the Girl who he loves, you know the one who give birth to A Sephiroth! Some say she too might be immortal & just lock herself away inside of a Crystal till the end of time! :(
Julieanne Fowler I totally agree, I really love the more mature and political story, in fact VI and XII are my favorite ones and I too have really enjoyed XV even with its flaws. I guess there really is a strong thematic connection between those for how few people that have played every FF love XV and XII although there are plenty of VI fans.
Totally Agree, love FF IX and XII so much. Dont play FF XV because dont own PS4, but after watch the ending on youtube, I hate it because the character has to die. I hate when the ending is bad (although it is for greater good)...

I really wish Square Enix would flesh out the stories of Ivalice more. I absolutely love the universe and I want more lore around it. I want to see something in Rozarria or something. Ivalice has so much potential for so many great stories after FF12 which is my favorite Final Fantasy
Another fact which some of you may know:
The optional in-game boss, Yiazmat was named after Yasumi Matsumoto (YASumi MATsumoto), who abruptly left in the middle of the game's development.
In fact, the title of the hunt is "Farewell to a Legend", which quite obviously alludes to this. Also, I don't think it's a coincidence at all that Yiazmat is the single most time-consuming boss to defeat in the entire Final Fantasy franchise, which I find pretty much reflects the tumultuously long development time that Final Fantasy XII had to endure. I can't remember what the exact dialogue was, but even the in-game petitioner of the hunt spoke of Yiazmat quite resentfully.

the only FF i hate is 8 they changed to much in ways of playing and there was no good way to play unless you had the internet or strategy guide. i like exploring and fighting battles not running away to keep my level low. and the airship and balomb garden moved way to slow in the overworld

The battle system was by far the best, how can you say it was slow? It’s the only game other than 15 where you don’t spend 10-15 seconds or more, waiting for a battle to start and finish, then god knows how long on a screen pressing x not caring that you just got 1000 exp and 500 Gil 😐 anyone who says the battle system in 12 isn’t the best (apart from maybe XV) is a straight up liar, there’s no way anyone can prefer random encounters over real time, out in the field encounters, no way, it’s an ATB system, with settings to make it slower or faster, and fast was pretty fast, no different from 6,7,9,10-2 and whatever else, it’s just out in the field, you cannot bash it, you’re clutching at straws with that one, if you think the story is mediocre then you think the story is mediocre, buts its much better than childish characters acting like children every 10 mins when they’re meant to be big tough men saving the world from a childish super villain, which is the majority of final fantasy games, I love final fantasy games, my favourite is 10, but I’m not gonna sit here saying 12 isn’t a better game when I know it is, by far

The FFXII summons are actually based on the Lucavi, the main antagonists of FFT. They didn't become summons until FFTA and FFTA2, and even then they were summoned using special items rather than the Summoner class.
For me was best FF in the series, and probably will be.
There is the fact that Basch was supposed to be the main character with a darker story. When I saw the official image for the remaster, I was relieved

Well, he still is the lead, kinda, though Balthier steal the show from him from time to time, and before you say Vaan, he is just a character to get the player to the real heroes of the game, and sticks with them with his GF.

I never played Final Fantasy until a year ago. I beat 10 and I'm on the palace mission on 12. I can't believe I never played these games! They're amazing and they would be great anime movies! I can definitely say 10 and Star Wars Kotor 1 and 2 are my favorite games of all time. 12 is looking better than 10 so far to me but we will see after I beat it. We're so lucky to be born in this era.
I remember how b-hurt everyone was about how automated the Gambits system was when (i) you 100% set it to how you want it as if you were manually controlling them (ii) you can still 100% manually control them by turning Gambits off ... and then SE thought to take away control of party members entirely with XIII and somewhat still with XV (but this is an action-RPG so semi-understandable)
I agree - the Gambit system was great, and I would like to see it developed further and appear in other games with only 1 controllable party member. The biggest complaints I had were that a) Gambits were treated like collectibles (which IZJS fixes), and b) scripts were sometimes too simple. Much better than in FF13 where you had practically no control over 2/3 of your party!
It's been so long since I played 12. But I remember liking the Gambit system. I set up my party to do the things I would have to pause and select anyway. And between actions I was overseeing them, and reselecting skills for more precise encounters. It was automated, but I was still in ultimate control.
And I can recall more of the story of 12 than I can of 13, despite an at least 5 year handicap (though still not much of either).
if they made it more like that it would basically be just choosing jobs for half the game. then after u start unlocking more the game becomes a huge bore with 6 re-skinned characters that all do the same stuff
As a token defender of 13, it's not fair to leave the description of battle with "taking control of party members away." The battle system of 13 is about management and macro-scale flow rather than the selection of individual skills. You're not battling the monster so much as you're battling the decaying buff timers, debuff timers, and chain gauge. All while keeping HP high with Sentinels and Medics.
FF13-2 was balanced much better, but the idea behind the battle system of FF13(-2) is, to me, the most clever gameplay element to come out of a main-series Final Fantasy game.
The ATB is too fast to control all 3. wtf im talking about 99% of battle time is us mashing the auto-battle command... 13 series is about how fast you can shift between paradigms, lol. its understandable, 13-1 is history and characters intro, just basic training and patience gauging. 13-2 is matching your timing with AI practice. finally the final exam in final fantasy- lightning return, when you must all utilize the basic and learn to perfect timing the guard command. it is because we all complaining about AI do all the job, they make it completely manual up to upgrading the spells and the skills, joke on us, the game is very hard to play, and not possible to 100% without at least 500 hours of playing. i replay the lightning return 5 times, i still cant beat Bhunibelze at hard mode, let alone Aeronite and Ereshkigal. its funny that most use spell in the game is fking POISON. if you said the game is easy, but all you do is spam buster sword garb, fuck you.

XII has always been my favorite. I remember in high school picking up the steelbook collector's edition. Still have it today and I still have my unopened Japanese import copy. Less than two weeks to go!
I loved FFXII. The gambits system wasn't hard for me to use. And mostly because SEXY Viera!
I loved the lore of the Viera. The green word, being very hostile of outsiders & those who choose to leave being outcast like Fran, that is a story by itself.
Fran also slowly lost her connection to her home the longer she was away i.e. not being able to hear the green word.
It also doesnt hurt that Viera are HOT! 😍
Isn't Zodiark related to the Serpentarius constellation? Supposedly that is the 13rd zodiac sign.
It is definitely that, you can even steal a Serpentarius from him, as you can steal an Aries Gem from Belias, for instance.
There's a reason why this game still my favorite game of all times since the day I played it in my 12yo (I'm 24, funny that I decided to play again after TWELVE years).

I still have a PS2 and I really enjoy FFXII, but I literally take month long breaks from it cause it's so freaking hard sometimes.
I love that its hard! They have said that they are going to make the zodiac age easier for people however so that should be good to get more casual players! I'm not disappointed because there is going to be a new game plus mode where you don't level up at all.

I don't think I'll add a machinist but I love the Foamalhalt because it gives low level party members a way to contribute to damage. Also I won't be adding a Ulan because my tanks will be a Knight and Samurai. That means no one can use the Zodiac Spear :(

Awesome video! FF12 never gets the recognition it deserves its my favorite game of all time and IMO its one of the best RPGs of all time and deserves to be mentioned with FF6, Chrono Trigger, Paper Mario and the rest of the greats.
XII is my favorite final fantasy, but only since I revisited it half a decade after release. When it came out it just didn't click for whatever reason. I love how it follows a whole group of protagonists' stories like VI did, and I love the larger political narrative you are just a part of. Additionally the game is gorgeous. I just played a fan translation of IZJS last year and it was amazing when upscaled on an emulator. IZJS removed the main issue with the game: The sameness of characters. (Though it has the odd quirk of making characters best at the jobs you'd expect them to be worst at because of caps)
I'll even defend Vaan. He doesn't have the most central role in the events of the story, but he acts as a foil to many of the characters throughout the story and pushes their development. His own progression as a character traces Rabanastre's recovery, his story about learning to let go of the cycle of war and retribution is one of the defining lessons of the game.
So underrated by fans, I always caught flack for it being my favorite. It was a more realistic vision.

12 was such a complete game, there was just so much stuff to do, you really got your moneys worth with this one. I put more hours into this game than any other FF. I wont be playing the remake because of this, i'm not spending a whole day farming one monster or chest to get the rare drop, not to mention fighting Zodiarch again. It's my 2nd favorite FF after 6 and for those who have never played it, you are in for a real treat.

Ff12 is my nr1 favourite game ever played and still playing again with the Zodiac Age. The story, dialogue, the world and music are simply brilliant.
FF XII is also the first I know of that has a battle engine that allows characters to run around the battle area in between active moments. What I mean is as follows:
There's an action bar that must fill before a battle action such as attack, spell cast, etc. can be performed. during the time it is filling for a particular character, the character can run around the battle area to avoid attacks by the enemies. What's more, this battle engine also allows for automatic activity of characters that are not under direct control, and you can dictate what those characters are able to do during that time. As with most FF games, you can switch your manual control to any playable character that is in the battle.
These are features that make this one of the best Final Fantasy Games.
FF12 was an experiment much like FF6 was, narratively speaking.
6 experimented with not having a main character and a really large cast.
12 experimented with not having a main villain, instead having a large cast of mid tier villains and a lot of political struggle.

You made a mistatement The summons in FFXII are NOT base don summons in Tactics. They are based on enemies/bosses in Tactics and summon-like beings in Tactics Advance. Summoners still summon the normal summons like Shiva, Ifrit, and Ramuh in Tactics and Tactics Advance.
Screw what anyone says, FFXII is my hands down favorite. As much as I enjoyed the more common "best FF" choices like 4, 6 and 7 they paled in comparison to how much I enjoyed FFXII. Hell, I bought the Japanese ZJS version so I could legally play my english version fanpatch. FFXII was a beautiful mix of what I liked about the older games while joining the more modern era of game mechanics. There are only two RPGs I hold in higher regard and both are pretty much undisputed gems: Planescape Torment and The Witcher 3.

loved XII since it came out. Every aspect of it. The fandom then condemned me like a madman lol.
Noctis was actually released as a character in Puzzle and Dragons a few weeks before FFXV was released.
And I'm actually playing the english translation patch for FFXII international via PCSX2, and if the new release is a true carry over of everything... it's MUCH easier than the original.... Not needing to zone or do anything special with my gambits to beat yiazmat (you know, the guy with 50 million HP) at an average party level of 64ish easy.
XII was a funny one for me. My first FF was X and I loved it. I was so excited when XII was released. I played it for a few hours, didn't understand the gambit system and found the open world strange. I stopped playing and put it on the shelf. Fast forward about a year, get very drunk, started it again and it all made sense. Now it's my 2nd favourite behind X. You never forget your first love.

I loved the concept of the judges I think they were inspired by the praetors of the Roman Empire . The armour designs were amazing
I'd like to point out something I've noticed about the summons, many of them actually resemble final bosses in previous final fantasies. Examples being the Chaos summon looks identical to Chaos from final fantasy 1 (yes their names are even the same), Ultima looks similar to the emperor's final form in final fantasy 2, Zeromus being from final fantasy 4 (again identical names), Who else caught on to those things?

I loved the game the day it came out. Still my top favorite of tbe franchise. It was fresh and new and felt more like an mmo and i loved it
I wish they release another game with same world and battle system since ivalice universe is so huge and sophisticated. I really want spin off Balthier as main protagonist
I played the PS2 PAL version of Final Fantasy XII during release, (my favourite entry in the series) but stopped when I reached the final boss for some reason. I think that deep down in my mind I did not want the game to end. I have such an urge to do a complete playthrough of the PS4 version of The Zodiac Age, but since Final Fantasy XVI does release in about 1 month, I will play through it after I fully complete Final Fantasy XVI.
It's funny how many people before said that this was the worst FF game and now everyone just says that it was good and ahead of the time, while I liked it back then
I've always preferred the theory that the end of FFTA caused the rest of the series, placing it first in the timeline. The Ivalice in FFTA doesn't fit with XII and the other games, and it would make sense if Marshe had a subconscious wish to keep his friends alive, and so the grimoire creates that new Ivalice when he destroys the old one. We then visit the new Ivalice as Luso through the grimoire in A2 (which is after XII and RW). It's why Montblanc appears in XII using a different clan name and there are races not present in FFTA.

Originally Basch was planned to be the main character. But because square felt the japanese audience wouldn't like him since he was "too manly" they came up with Vaan.
I am currently replaying the remaster ver. on the PS4 and I have no problem with the zodiac job system. I had first played the game when I was about 14, but didn't finish it because I didn't quite understand the mature political plot going on and didn't really know how to handle my gambits well, which are crucial to beating the game. Now in my 20s, I just can't help but appreciate this game much more. As a kid I liked it a lot but just couldn't understand much. Now it's very nostalgic but still new to me since I am finally able to enjoy the story and the battle system with more ease. I am grateful this game exists!
Wish more games had a Gambit system for party members, that and XV issue command and swapping would be a very fun game.
This was my first and favourite FF, the game I love in my childhood.
I love this this game for how much it achieved because it made it clear how much more development is needed. Ivalice had airships and guns but no roads, canals, and inns to accommodate commerce. I'd go insane going from town to town without any break. Maybe a system with long term stamina and short term stamina would address It. There is weather variation in the country but not in the cities. There is no day and night variation. There are no farms. How do people eat and how are cities possible without them? Ivalice looks like a backward world. A system using piercing / edged / blunt types of damage and a proximity sphere for targeting range like Vagrant Story would exploit the properties of each class of weapons. Short term stamina could exploit the properties of different classes of armor and shields. Also it's a small team of 6 against the Arcadian army and giant monsters. Stealth tactics would be the only way to survive. But maybe its too much to ask for something like MGSV (this ain't perfect either). A Final Fantasy, Star Ocean, Tales, or YS that integrated these aspects would be amazing.
I'm more excited about this rerelease than I ever was about FFXV or any other sequel they're still coming out with.

Loved XII since it came out while others, including my friends, were saying it was boring.
I always thought Final Fantasy should have stuck with Ivalice instead of going the route it took with 13 and onward. When I think Final Fantasy, I think fantasy setting like Ivalice, IX, and VI. The steampunk/future stuff doesn’t really feel right for the series.
Either way, can’t wait to see what they’ll do for 16.
I actually wished they would retexture the game and all to make it look really new instead of just a graphics bump.
It's a pity it's not a memorable FF for many people but IMO, it's one of the best FF storywise and character development, and a lot of the game is really nice.
The Gambit System was so much fun to play with. I keep hoping someone will use it's basic mechanics for some sort of mobile rpg game.
I don't get why people dislike ffxii so much. yeah Vaan was annoying at times but the game was awesome and really well made and the story was awesome.
Just getting around to playing TZA and it’s as goof as I remember the original. Once I understood the gambits it was next level.

Fun fact: if Astrology had updated its system to account for stellar drift/universal expansion, Ophiuchus would have been the 13th Zodiac. This is why the constellation has a Zodiac Stone in FFTactics and Zodiark is aligned with it here in 12.
