You're not still live.... But here's my understanding about the rights at Vertigo/DC... I think it might be similar to the situation with the rights to Watchmen with Alan Moore/Dave Gibbons... That DC retains the rights as long as they keep the franchise in print... But the creators have the right to royalties... In other words, they pay the creators a percentage of any profits made by the IP. But that doesn't give the creators control over those characters. SO anything done with Sandman would result in money going to Gaiman... Which DC might not want to do. HOWEVER they could use the original Greek myth version of the character as long as they didn't call him Sandman or make him look like the spikey haired version that Gaiman created... And Gaiman might end up with trhe rights to his Sandman back if DC don't keep him in print... But it's unlikely that he could print them himself as the art would then be owned by the artists... who might not want to 'get into bed' (so to speak) with Gaiman to make it happen.

I think he created that so probably. This question will probably be answered if this goes to court. If it doesn’t I can see DC still producing and selling his old material for the foreseeable future. If he was found guilty I can definitely see the endless ending.
