  • They don't tell you how to dispose of your credit cards. If you do it wrong, you can be exposed to identity theft and perhaps fraudulent credit card charges. You can either cute them up and dispose of them in different garbage bags ad different times or possibly try out melting them like I show in this video.

    I always just cut mine into 4ths and then drop each piece in random separate trash cans... at work... fast food trash bin... public sidewalk bin... etc.

    Just cleaned out my junk drawer and found a handful of old, expired credit cards. Decided to try the belt sander on the data. Erased the last 4 digits, the CVC on the back, wore down the magnetic strip and sanded thru the chip till I saw blank plastic. I think I got it all.

    I'm sure all your card don't expire at the same time so doing them as you go shredding them sounds like the best option.

  • @berry186

    You probably could shredded it, wrap it foil 3 times then bbq it for about 3 to 4 hours. That way it's outside instead of in the house.

    One tip I do have is that I never sign my credit cards. Instead I write on the back, "Please ask for ID". Of course, no one ever has! The idea of melting them is good and I probably will take them outside and hold a lighter to each one, and maybe still cut them. I have previously shredded them, too. That would take a pretty determined person to get it back together! Our garbage goes directly to the County's dump. I think melting is the best method, for now. Back to old physics lesson, nothing can be created from nothing nor can it be made into nothing. (paraphrasing). Good effort!Good video! 😎👍

  • @RaymondPoon
    @RaymondPoon 7 років тому +3

    What risk are you mitigating by not simply shredding the old one?
    1) Credit card companies protect against fraudulent transactions
    2) I only need to dispose of old cards because it is expired and I have a new one; therefore the old one is not active

    • @BeatTheBush
      @BeatTheBush  7 років тому

      The card protection is a last resort. So it's better to not have to use it as it causes annoyance and headache. The old one has the same numbers as the new one except for the expiration date. Is not hard to guess what the new one is.

    There is a company that used to recycle cards. I called them a while back and they aren't doing it right now. My mom had a gift card she thought was empty and asked me to destroy so I chopped it up into tiny pieces. She realized it was still good so I gathered up the pieces and had it back together in 30 Minutes. I realized after I was done that it would have gone faster if I wouldn't have worried about the parts with nothing on them.

    Lets say someone steals every active card you have though.
    You're not liable for fraudulent purchases. That's the beauty of credit cards.
    Cross cut the plastic ones and be done. Your house wont smell like a meth lab too.
    My question is what to do with plastic/metal "Pletal" fused cards like sapphire preferred, the amazon prime card. They say don't shred on the card. I think it would break a normal shredder

    who has 18 credit cards?? you have 1 or 2 for something like 5 years.. and why would you need more than let's say 3 cards?

    • @SamuelCuster
      @SamuelCuster 7 років тому +3

      The more lines of credit you have the better. You'd also want to mix things up in there like a mortgage, car loan etc. But having more cards can improve your credit score. In Credit Karma states having 9 lines of credit or less puts you in the red category. 20+ lines of credit puts you in the green.
      Additionally, if you want to use your credit cards for daily use (instead of cash, for rewards 1-5% cash back) AND you want to use auto pay (so that you don't have to immediately pay them off to keep your utilization low). Then you want to make sure to have enough cards to where your total credit pool is large enough to where your monthly usage keeps you still below 30% utilization. For example, if your monthly spend was $6k, you would want your total available credit to be $20,000. Usually you will need more than 1 or 2 cards to reach this credit limit.

    • @BeatTheBush
      @BeatTheBush  7 років тому +2

      +Samuel Custer Wow, you covered basically everything. :D I would add 'well below' 30% utilization. So if spending was $1k you might look to having a limit of $100k or more so even with your regular usage, it would not affect your score much.

    Straight to the point “foil all your cards and put them on the oven at 200C for couple hours”
    The foil keeps the fumes of melting the cards in instead of spread into the whole house
