Yes he is slapping the upright bass, and it almost sounds like a train moving along the tracks. Notice he did not once look at the piano, but you could tell he was listening for key changes. Damn he took that bass for a walk!
The slap bass technique is a staple of rockabilly and psychobilly music. Didn't know it was used in blues until I heard a live recording of Willie Dixon ("Big City Blues & Howlin' Wolf in Warsaw" - a great little album released by Radio Poland).
I love the fact that there appears to be such little effort in his playing. I know so much is going on, but his touch appears so light, controlled and just in the pocket. Just completely awesome. This is a perfect example of how simplicity and control prove perfection when debating differences in technique, soul, and musical training.
The godfather of the blues! His songs are blues and rock history! The most famous musicians of the 20th century covered his songs. The list of bands that have covered his songs is long and significant. Dixon deserves greater credit for his influence on music over the last century.
For me... This is what you tube is made for.... Genuinely I'd never get the privilege to be so entertained and awestruck at the same time by such talent.
One of the greatest bassists / bluesman that ever lived in my opinion. He played on virtually every blues record that came out of Chess records during their classic era. Thanks for posting!
There's a CD out called American FolkAnd Blues Festival 1963. It's all these guys in their prime jamming John Lee Hooker, Muddy show up. It's valuable stuff.
I have played piano since a kid. I got a little electric bass made for me as a gift because my both hands are injured. It has helped me a lot with piano, too! They are the combination that is for my ears the best. I have been wondering of voice. I have always been acoustic with pianos and singing, and the little cute handmade electric bass is just so wonderful! I love music. I want to thank you all for these things. Let's listen and learn some more, day by day!
lol he was so out of tune in thumb position, he just was just sliding and trusting his ears but boy oh boy he was failing. No intonation practice at all.
@@datryhardasian his music was even covered by Megadeth, bet old Dave Mustaine hardly knows the Big Three Trio, yet his music arrived to the metalhead masses back in 1986. You can be influential without being well known, it happens more often than not.
I take your point, but I'd put in a word for W C Handy as the most influential: he codified the 12 bar blues chord progressions, recorded the first blues composition, and was therefore a common starting point for a huge chunk of 20th and 21st century music: blues, jazz, rhythm and blues, rockabilly, rock and roll and so on.

I saw the Chicago Blues All Stars some time in the '70s or '80s at, I believe the Ambassador Hotel (could be mistaken). It was the only time that, at the first note, a chill ran up and down my spine. This was real Chicago blues that I had only read about and heard on record!. And when Willie Dixon sang "29 Ways" and others it was sheer joy. The man was a genius.
I've been listening to Willie for probably 30 years. As a string bassist, I've always been envious of those big hands/long fingers. Most good playing is really technique, but when you can wrap your hand completely "around" the bass neck -man, that's a big advantage.

@@danjo7398 Disagree. just as a side note: It was even slapped way before Dixon. And it´s not necessarilly different techniques. I use the some technique from my upright also on the electric bass. Started slapping in 1986 with upright. Graham and Bootsy got their own style, great, but the technique started with the upright. Anyway it was there first, so who bothers ? Greets
@@artcorepiercingundtattoo2616 I’m not discussing who started what and when they started it. I’m saying slapping a double bass and slapping an electric bass are totally different techniques, which they simply are. I don’t see Dixon or any other double slapper doing much with their thumb other than using it as an anchor. Electric slap bass in its most popular forum as most people know it started with Larry Graham making up for a lack of rhythm when the drummer left his mother and his band.....but again who started what wasn’t my original point. My point is that the 2 techniques are very different.
@@danjo7398 I use the thumb for the triple slap on the upright and on the electric bass. If you use the triple slap technique it´s too fast to see it clearly. Check out round 1:02.
@@artcorepiercingundtattoo2616 you use triple slap...great. Bottom line is that they are different instrument, they sound different and they look different and the same goes for the techniques used on them. 12 bar blues is pretty common, basically every jazz musician can play it without looking at a piano

Agreed! 10-5-23.
Willie Dixon is the coolest. Such effortless precision.
He knows his axe and is feeling his soul. Piano man is genius at less is more.
Watching his plucking fingers move is incredible, he has such a distinctive style of playing

Play that bass, Willie! ... Rock, Rhythm, Blues, Jazz... It's all there in this piece. So many songs he penned. Fantastic, a one-of-a-kind musician.
What a great display of Willie's talents. Thank you.
Dixon's talkative upright bass, I like his beautiful face while playing, beautiful smile on his face ; And Sunnyland Slim sounds so good !
Great clip of Mr. Dixon. Wow man.... Talent! 🔥
