I've been playing rockabilly for 20 years, and I can say that this is the best video that contains all the slap techniques without further ado. This is the best instructional video!
Wow, ego boost x 100!! 😁 thank you so much!! I'm thinking of making another one on really basic practice techniques. Thanks again. I'm glad you enjoyed Cheers
this is the best slap bass video I've found so far . Thanks! I'd better start practicing... Liked the "if your fingers start bleeding then give it a rest" advice, to paraphrase.
Fantastic video. I'm getting back playing the doghouse with my band, because my mates kept pestering me forever! Haven't played it much the last 10 years. This will helo me getting back to shape!
Holy smokes. It huts just from watching. Buying my first double bass this Friday (after 10 years on bass guitar). Just came to see what is ahead of me :D
О бро, у меня такая же ситуация (15 лет на бас гитаре) теперь жду свой первый контрабас, он сейчас в мастерской, на реставрации. Жду как ребенок подарок под елкой)
Been searching for the way this is done for a while, finally glad to see the different techniques used for this. I'm more of a guitarist but have always wanted to experiment with upright bass and try this on my cello
Fantastic...Thank you!!! Definitely going to try all of this and use it for the backdrop for my Native American Style flutes...This should be interesting and FUN!!!
In tunes that have an upright bass, I always thought the 'tick tick' before each bass note was something the drummer was doing, not the bassist. Thanks for enlightening me!
I could be wrong but in my experience 99% of the time it's *note* followed by the *slaps*. you were teaching slap, slap, note in your triplet exercise for example which places the which should be on beat one, on beat three so you'll end up playing "off" the drummer. Otherwise a pretty good explainer of how to achieve the different percussive effects.
No, you are right, I've noticed there is some confusion out there about how to count them. I just thought I'd keep it simple. I may not be right but it's the result that counts. Cheers
I just started the other day. I didn't even watch a turtorial and I got the hang of 1,2,3 slap but I can't do a 4 yet. My bass is an upright Washtub that has high action.
WOW! I just had s revelation as you did the slaps incorporating the heel of the hand. It's almost exactly something you need to do with conga drums too. And it is when you start to marry the dry bones of notes with rhtyhms that really can tap into how folk dance particular ways: heel/toe/slap/tone (toe being finger tip in percussion)are the three keys to afro/brazilian/cuban percussion. It ain't any different for any instrument that has a folk dance root to it. Also, that extreme style of slapping style you can generate when you incorporate celever heel hits interspersed with toe/tone, appears to be that trick that Willie Dixon does on that single with Chck Berry, and Memphis Slim ''We're Gonna Rock'' when it hits Willie's so good it is talking the p*ss solo?
Thank you so much! Start slow but also start short until you build your skin. If you practice too much at the start (as we all do), you'll blister quickly and won't be able to practice for a few days until you heal. Cheers!
Hi, the bass wasn't plugged in for this video, I just recorded it acoustically with my phone. For 15years I used the KK rockabilly pro pick ups which I love because it is very versatile and tough. 100's of gigs and rehearsals in many situations... I also used rotosound strings but they are expensive...but really good. This particular bass isn't set up at all, I just got it and it has orchestral metal strings and a friend gave me the magnetic pick ups, but it is temporary until I get myself decent strings and the kk's again. Check out the comment by "Skin head.." And thanks for your comment😊 Cheers
Obviously very talented and the technique is on point. However, I do find it very odd that you lead with the palm and finish with the pull. I could be confusing to some because it should be pull at the 1 and palm motion on the "and". 1 (pull), and (palm), 2 (pull), and (palm), 3 (pull), and (palm), 4 (pull), etc ...
Hey, thanks for that, you're right. I've always played like that (backwards, slap 1st and note 2nd) and I'd like to address that In another video. For a more technical musician its probably important. In psychobilly and neo rockabilly, for me, anything goes, but I'm rough. Cheers and thanks
Hi and thanks! The pick up wasn't plugged in for the video. I've used and liked the kk rockabilly pro for many years, with non-steel strings such as rotosounds and other soft and cheaper strings. Cheers
Hi, they're just whatever crappy old steel strings came with the bass. Not sure what they are. Rotosounds are my favourite and i used weed wackers for rehab. 👍
I haven't had the chance to try them. I think you can play rockabilly on any strings but the feel, tension, attack, sustain and warmth will be different so try a few. The strings I'm using on this video are your basic orchestral steel strings. About as bad as it gets for rockab. Got myself some rotosound rs 4000 since then. On my old dbl bass I had a mixed dropped set. It took me a long time to work out what I liked.
I so long to learn to play this magnificent instrument, however, is there any hope for me because there seems to be a lot of frightening mathematical codes and counting, I’m so rubbish at math.. is there hope for me ?
First thing is get the steels off and get some unwound gut on. Oh, and don't forget to get a shadow transducer and junk the electromagnetic pickup as well. (It sounds like an electric bass and won't work anyway with gut).
Thanks m8, that's true. I picked up this bass as is, with steelos on it, and a friend gave me the pick ups. On my last bass I had a dropped set of rotosounds and a kk rockabilly pro pick ups. I used that set up for over 15 years and I swear by it. The strings had good flex, attack and sustain and were very stable in the long run. the kk is tremendously flexible in all situations and soooo tough. Occasionally used weed wackers for rehab when my finger joints hurt from bad positioning and too many rehearsals.. I played mostly neo-rockabilly/country/punk/blues/trash/pop🤣. Also had an swr 15 combo which gave THE best and most double bassy sound ever out of heaps of speakers I tried. Unfortunately had to let go of everything when I moved countries. I've never tried a shadow transducer, but I've heard good things. Hopefully I'll get a decent set up again soon. Cheers man! All the best.👍
Hi, thank you!! Not 15 years. I am a slow learner, but this can be learnt quickly. It depends on muscle memory. I never change the finger board but I use softer strings. Cheers 🫱🫱🫱🫱
Hi, im probably playing in G for the most part, but I'm not focused on the notes, they are pretty messy, and lack intonation. I really didn't put any effort into playing cleanly. Which is obvious when I listen to it. Sorry about that. 🤣👍

Does zero gravity help tp speed up the slap?

That is the coolest shit on planet earth. I saw George Shuffler do this stuff in the 1970's, and I wondered for decades how he did it.
