At the time...the law required BOTH the man and the woman involved to be brought forward to be judged. The crowd knowingly only brought the woman and protected the man. Therefore, the entire crowd was bearing false witness and lying by means of omission and thus..... The woman could NOT be convicted based upon the tainted evidence brought forth.(it was a basic legal concept that the Pharisee were trying to trip up Christ with)
let he who is without sin cast the first stone, is a just response, as ALL the crowd was engaged in a sin by protecting the man.
I often wonder what Christ was writing in the sand...the man's name? The words of the law? The 9th Commandment? Pretty flower images?

So if we are NOT the sum of our sin, does that mean no one goes to hell for sins and only because they WANT to go to hell and they DONT want Gods love? It just seems there is an emphasis on our sins DETERMINING where we end up

If we fail to will against our sinful ways, that's what happens. Determination doesn't imply equivalence anyway.
