How do we change our distorted image of God?
Pray, study, and visit the tombs of saints and Holy men to pray for wisdom. Study their lives.
Pray the Psalms or the Marian Psalter, better-wise known as the Rosary. Study the Proverbs [("pro": "positive," "verbs:" "actions") Godly behavior, conducts, and manners]. Study also the Eucharist. Is the Eucharist peaceable or violent? In motion or at rest? Dependent or independent? Interdependent? Dark or light? Large or small? Loud or silent? Meek or threatening? Et cetera. Be as the Eucharist. Study Jesus, also, in the Gospels, Acts and Revelation. Visit holy locations and people; for how is one a pilgrim and not on pilgrimage? Go to the Saints, especially the Blessed Mother Mary. Christ's blessing on you, I pray, in His Holy Name.
Pray for the Holy Spirit to live in you, pray for deliverance, and, receive the sacraments frequently, and contemplate the goodness of God. Adore the beatitudes.
If we have a distorted view of God... I took it as Fr highlighting our trust in God... we are to trust God more.
You get to know Him. The distorted image mainly comes from not knowing Him enough.
The same with a marriage. You can't trust your spouse the first time you meet him/her, but the more time and difficulties you spend together, the more you trust each other and surrender to each other.
This is what we should do with Jesus. Get to know Jesus. His character, His love, how he took all the beatings and the humiliations and even death for you.
You can't help but fall in love with God when you see his sacrifice on the cross. He loves you so much He died for you. Now that's the correct image of God, and not the distorted one.
Ok, we have a distorted image of God, then what is the authentic image of God that we should have. You didn't tell us. To say "we got it wrong" and not say "[this] is the right way" is not just.
