ffs, people are still blabbering on about how angustidens was bigger than simus? that is so wrong it's not even funny. I'm guessing you're using the very erroneous 1700 kg estimate of angustidens. no, just no. angustidens weighed about 800 kg. here is a bit from the article.
MLP 35-IX-26 is the largest specimen of A. angustidens by far and its measurements, taken directly from Soibelzon & Schubert (2011) are:
      Humerus: 615-620mm Ulna: 570mm Radius 500-490mm
The next largest are ~15% smaller as shown by Soibelzon & Tarantini (2009), this publication also has the length of 11 A. angustidens skulls and the largest found is 430mm long.
The largest humerus of Arctodus simus is 647mm and comes from Nebraska, the largest ulna is 591mm and comes from California (Kurten, 1967) and the largest skull is 506mm and comes from Alaska (Lambe 1911), from all over the US we have found larger bones from A. simus, indicating such size was common, contrary to MLP 35-IX-26 of A. angustidens, which is not only slightly smaller than them but clearly outside the norm of its species

If it existed and trived for few more million years. It might have filled its small toothed gap with full set of bone crunching tooth😅. Not the biggest Prehistoric Bear Skull found anymore.....
2 or 3 yrs ago in Argentina, a team located the Largest Skull and several bones from a Bear perserved or encased in hardened mud, not sure but I believe it too was a Shortfaced Bear??.., anyway, that skull appears to be almost double the size of this one.😨.
So large was this incredible Bear Skull, that scientists have changed the "Estimation of just how LARGE" this Species of Bear was that roamed the earth some 700, 000 years ago.
Experts have estimated, based on this new Bear Skull find, that the Short-faced Bear was much larger than they had initially thought, standing now closer to 15ft when on it's hind legs. 😲😨
Massive 1,400lb Brown Bears of TODAY, primarily found in Alaska, can stand as tall as 9 to 10ft on their hind legs. And these are the Largest of the full grown Males we're talking about here.
( there is a couple Hunting videos specifically on UA-cam that shows one of these massive Beasts being weighed by the use of a Tractor, weighing a staggering 1, 419 lbs and standing 10ft tall. They hoist him up with the tractor and a man stands in front of him to give reference to his ridiculous size appearing half it's height. It truly is a terrifying sight to see that we still share the earth with such massive creatures. )
Anyways, point being .... add 5 to 6 additional Feet to a Bear THAT big, 😨 Good God.... it's almost hard to comprehend.
This bear would be on all fours and as tall as an average sized HORSE. Except this isn't a horse, it's a Meat Eating MONSTER that routinely killed Saber-toothed Tigers when stealing their prey. They truly had no equal in size or power , as they roamed earth AFTER the Dinosaurs went extinct, meaning they were THE APEX PREDATORS of the world.
Unfortunately tho, when the animals died off... so did these massive Beasts not being able to sustain their huge diet of meat. Probably not a bad thing tbh, wouldn't want to run into one of those while out hiking. Lol

Thank you! Hey that arctodus is indeed a monster outsizing its modern cousins but you're right! Arctotherium augustidens was indeed the size of a black rhino. Their dentition was significantly more robust and just like their modern relative the Andean bears today the giants broke and ate trees, as well as vegetable matter AND likely a lot more bone and meat, especially once they got to a certain weight age and size.
