And not only that, but you also got see several North American steam locomotives, cross the country, and meet Alan Pegler’s daughter for the first time!
Despite the difficulties I'm glad Scotsman was able to tour the US and create some interesting scenarios. The S&A 750 locomotive it met with is on display at the Southerneastern Railway Museum in Duluth, Ga northeast of Atlanta, Ga USA.
Confession time. Up until watching Unlucky Tug’s vid of Scotty’s USA tour, I really only knew of Alan Pegler as the man who nearly lost her forever in my country. But now I can see just how deep his love for this old girl ran and I can’t say I can’t relate to that. Seeing the twinkle in his eye in this video even decades after bankrupting him just brings the biggest smile to my face. You can tell he doesn’t have an ounce of regret. It’s sad he didn’t get to see her return to steam a few years ago but his spirit clothes that engine forever and will be felt at her centenary next year. Thank you Sir and Godspeed
Thanks for the upload, Jess. By the way, for those who are interested, the piece of music playing around 21:00 and 42:00 is La scala di seta (The Silken Ladder) by Rossini, 1812. I don't know the particular recording though.
The late 60s where not a good time for railroading in america It's sad that the first things scotsman got to see in one of our yards are old worn out cars and trash everywhere but at least she was welcomed in open arm's
They wouldn't allow that today the train being craned directly above all the people gathered underneath at the docks loading onto the Saxonia! That is an amazing piece of film! Health and safety would blow a nut and everyone would be kept 1/4 of a mile back 😂 Great upload and truly a magical man Peggler was.
my grandfather was able to see the Coronation Scott in the states when it visited for the 1939 World's Fair, my dad wasn't born then, but my grandfather always used to tell me how beautiful the LMS Princess Coronation Class Pacific's were. He passed away a few years ago. I was born in 1976, so I was a few years late to see 4472 in America, but I did fly to Britain to see her in steam when she returned to her home. During the USA tour, My grandfather was able to cab ride with the crew of the LMS Princess Coronation Class no.6220 (the crew told him the engine's real number was 6229 as 6220 was the first LMS Princess Coronation Class and she was in service in Britain, so no.6229 was chosen and swapped numbers and nameplate with no.6220). My grandfather had a blast riding in the cab, he even got a few photos of the crew and was able to do some coal shoveling for the fireman. It is a honor to know my grandfather was a part of the LMS's Coronation Scot's USA tour back in 1939. The LMS Princess Coronation Class is my favorite LMS locomotive, as it is part of my family. Thanks grandad! You will always be remembered.
28:43 very interesting to see our Scottish flags, the Saltire and Lion Rampant, were flown while the pipe band played the tune of Hielan Laddie to herald the arrival of an engine named after the Scotsman himself.
There was a large number of Scottish expats living in Boston at the time so undoubtedly seeing an engine with 'Scotsman' in the name would have caused an interest no doubt.
The U.S. didn't expect to see a British steamer on American rails. Flying Scotsman visited north america and back to Britain. It was cool while it lasted.
I remember seeing coming home being shown in an exhibition room at Steamtown, Carnforth, in the late 1970s, and it made quite an impression on me. The music on the section where she's on the boat was what's known as the 'Hovis Ad', but is part of the largo from the New World Symphony (No. 9) by Anton Dvorak

Well the films look great, but I'm sure it would sound better if all the soundtrack was in its original pitch, plus the last 30 minutes of the video "un-muted", if you know what I mean.
Ironically, the film with Flying Scotsman running in America from Boston to Dallas, was recorded IN America with soundtrack correctly pitched, separately from the rest of this whole video. By the way, NWR1991, for your next Flying Scotsman, you might wanna record that film with the correct pitching, and perhaps even reveal the title of each theme as the Boston--Dallas tour film goes on. 😉
The overpowering music made it difficult to hear what the narrator was saying at times. It went from nonstop orchestral composition to silent film. I was hoping to grab a view of it entering the old Pennsylvania Station in NYC or hear the locomotive at its full potential. This would’ve been the last train to enter and leave the original Penn Station before it sadly was demolished i believe. It was around the same time the new infamous station was being constructed.
Moved tanks and vehicles aboard ship in WW1 and WW2 this way. The train would have been tack welded to a a set of blocks on the ship that are on all four corners of the train! Which provides a clamping function there are millimetres of clearance and then when disembarking these just grind of the tack welds!
If I could had gone back in time to the 60s I would have had Great Northern, Papyrus, Doncaster, Cameronian, Salmon Trout, Royal Lancer, Fairway, Merry Hampton, Victor Wild, The Tetrarch, The White Knight, Sceptre, Book Law, Shotover, Donovan, Blink Bonny, Tagalie, Tranquil, Singapore, Brown Jack, Centenary, Prince of Wales, Dick Turpin, Knight of Thistle, Sir Frederick Banbury, Flying Fox, Robert the Devil, Solario and Pretty Polly purchased for preservation at the National Railway Museum while Flying Scotsman was doing rail tours in America and Australia.
Thanks. I forgot about Victor Wild, Flying Fox, Book Law, Sceptre, Tranquil, Blink Bonny, Shotover, Galtee More, Tracery, Prince Palatine, Grand Parade, Tagalie, Brown Jack, Gay Crusader and Captain Cuttle. Those are also my favorite Gresley A1s and A3s as well

I never knew The Flying Scotsman came to Canada! When?
In 1970.
Would've been in interesting doubleheader with 4449 daylight...colourful lol
It’s a shame that Papyrus wasn’t able to do rail tours with Flying Scotsman due to being scrapped and withdrawn from service in 1963.
Tragic the sound dies just as Coming home starts
RIP Alan Pegler and Gresley A1s and A3s, they will be sadly missed

Yes
27:41 My other favourite music.
Only If Nigel Was Still Alive To See What His Beautiful Engine Came To Be.

You need more subs
Since the locomotive was welded to the ship, how did they remove it
By unwelding it? It's possible to do that.
just grind the weld off

Must say the us tour was probably the worst idea that ever happened, a beloved relic of the steam era never returned to its home country
Technically, Scotsman did return home, it just took over 3 years-
2:14 due to the dieselization
Btw weres unlucky tug for this???

And in case you’re wondering what numbers they wore:
Great Northern - 4470
Papyrus - 2750
Doncaster - 2547
Cameronian - 2505
Salmon Trout - 2506
Lemberg - 2544
Pretty Polly - 2560

Disposition of the Gresley A1s and A3s: 33 preserved; remainder scrapped
Flying Scotsman doesn’t deserve to be alone in his class
The other A3s I forgot were Persimmon, Woolwinder, Harvester, and Robert The Devil
what happened to the sound on the "Coming home " bit ? I thought my computer was faulty for a minute.
I don't have an answer for that, sadly.
