For the life of me, I will NEVER understand why some criticize others about how things are done…especially fishing of all things!! When we were kids, we were poor but boy did we love fishing. So we’d scour the banks for line, weights or hooks. We’d use just about anything for bait; dragonflies were the best or grasshoppers. Wrap the line around a stick, a can, whatever. Sometimes we’d improvise and get the screen off a window, tie up the corners into a makeshift net and catch minnows or shad out of canals. Nice catfish or an occasional bass would be dinner. I don’t get it Rob…just can’t. I would think your way is best because you can feel the bite easier. Oh well. May the good Lord touch their hearts and give them sound reasoning to see it is HE that provides and that we only are the recipients of HIS blessings. Awesome video Rob! Keep em coming brother! Be safe, enjoy Alaska and don’t let the negativity get to you. They’re everywhere. I’ve been told so many times my tricks won’t work but I get my plate full every time. Canned tuna in oil? Save the oil, put your plastics in it. Rub peanut butter on your crank baits and a home made dragonfly!! Improvise, adapt, overcome!! Have fun!! See ya!!

Hi Rob. From a guy that loves light tackle fishing, I am so happy you proved the doubter wrong with that halibut!! Half the time it's not the weight of the tackle, but the skill and patience of the fisherman. We all know that you have those skills in abundance! Nice one sir and thanks for the uploads. Love to the family x

I'm glad that hater was able to make you youtube famous. ;) On a side note you never know you anyone might be. First time I learned this lesson was my first job working in a grocery store in high school. Guy comes in with a dirty shirt, shorts, ballcap, and flipflops. I'm bagging groceries and start bagging his. Its the essentials, milk, bread, eggs, cheese, and a few other items. He doesn't have enough cash to pay for everything and is short a few bucks. I had a great day with tips and so I offered to pay (mostly because I didn't want to put the groceries back) and it was only 2 or 3 bucks. He was shocked and it stunned him for a minute. He didn't have any junk food or beer or anything like that so I felt he might be on hard times. I learned that he wasn't, he was just in a hurry. He asked me if I liked baseball and I told him I have been to a few games. The man I had helped was not poor and was not dirty. It was just CUSTOM prints. Turns out he was the OWNER of Turner Field Stadium in Atlanta, Ga where the Braves play. He gave me his business card and told me I could bring as many friends as I wanted and sit anywhere I wanted. I tried to get all my friends to come but they didn't believe me. I only had one friend come but we got VIP press pass tickets and gate tickets (where celebs and politicians go) and I got same VIP box seats right behind home plate with all the food and drink I could want. I have so many other stories just like this. You never know who is watching or who is listening or who a person is. It pays dividends to remain humble at all times. Even if the people are not bigshots they probably know one and will tell your story to them.

I was out there a year ago this same time in the Cook Inlet. We went out with a charter captain (Fish On Fire), who was cut from a different cloth. He put us on the fish quickly and we limited out in 2 hours but his personality makes me wonder if it was this captain that was giving Rob a hard time. As good a captain he was, I could never use him again bc of his personality. Way to go Rob and thanks for showing us how to prove the haters wrong.

I remember about 25 years ago I went Trout fishing below Beaver Dam on the White River, when I got down by the water with my spin-cast Ultra Light, the fly fishermen that were there said nothing was biting, that they had been fishing for 3 hours with no luck. After about 20 minutes I was leaving. One of the fishermen was up on the bank where I was, he was shocked that I was leaving with my limit (7 fish at that time), I just shrugged my shoulders and said, "exactly what I expected" and left.

Rob, I was just watching your show here and if I may suggest an idea for you when it comes to a great steak. At home I use an injector that I use for turkey and other meats. 1 1/2 tbsp melted butter.(per steak) Fresh lemon juice and garlic powder(Easier to dissolve) to taste inject them then add what ever seasoning you choose. I let mine sit over night but at least a couple of hours. after you finished cooking set on a plate and cover with foil for about 10 mins.

We don't think it's no joke, its about the adventure, the plan, the execution, the experience, and the people. All the above is what makes it a beautiful lasting memory and a warm feeling. It don't matter what body of water it is, for me it's the only way to get that feeling.

Robert, I took a seven foot medium action bass rod up there to catch silver salmon. People thought I was crazy. I got half my limit in three drops. and sat there waiting for the others in my party to do the same. Handed the rod to my buddy and he lost ten in about a half hour before getting used to it and got his half limit soon after.
We went out and got halibut and rockfish before going to get the rest of our silvers once again and after getting "dropped on" by one of our guys who didn't pay attention, I lost three in a row. I moved and got two more which was one shy of a limit and then I dropped for the last time and my rod doubled over. Same witless guy was going to drop net to me, but I threatened him with death. I fought that fish hard for nearly 25 minutes and was rewarded with a 22 pound king salmon. Yes anything is possible and I love you are proving the locals wrong, like I did

As long as the reel holds enough line you're good and with modern braids you can put a lot of line on a spinning reel. I'm not sure I would want to tangle with a 200 plus pound halibut on light tackle though, haha.

  • @brianwismer2529
    @brianwismer2529 2 роки тому

I’ve always fished with light tackle. I have a favorite ultra-light rod that I made when I was like 16 yrs old.
And along with my favorite reel, an old Penn 716 Spinfisher, you can’t go wrong! It’s so much fun!
Caught a lot of bluegill, crappie, catfish, some large and smallmouth and even a few walleye that took it
to its limits, but I’m still using that old rig! I just never got interested in a bait caster rig.

As for the cat knocking you, imagine when he realizes who he was dealing with! Before braid, and all the crazy new lines, I've stuck with the lightest mono and tackle for 50+ years because of the CHALLANGE!

Think Hemingway might have used some heavy split bamboo rod's for marlin actually and my age I actually had a steel rod at one time when I was young.

We do have the biggest and best salmon and halibut in Alaska and possibly in the world out in Cook Inlet, but there are only a few captains up here that will or can take you to them. The waters can be a bit crazy at times and you wont expect it until it takes you for a rough ride...Another good video Rob of my State, and my Kenai Peninsula!

Now that's one hell of a boat ramp. No getting stuck and no waiting in line. Only problem is, won't that thing rust out with the saltwater?

Dang, this is really good publicity for John Deere, saltwater is the worst enemy of a vehicule and this one works flawlessly even doing regular beach launches

Hoping you see this and know that the Alcan Highway is going o be out of order for a long time. Praying for safe travels home if you haven't left already. The Alaska Marine Highway is your best bet. You could always stop off on Prince of Wales Island in SE Alaska and do some REAL Halibut fishing. 😁
