SAS Fire from the Forest - Tragedy & Heroism in WW2 France

In the small village of Rom, in south west France, lie 30 Special Air Service men and one American pilot. In the weeks before the SAS commandos’ tragic end at the hands of Nazi murderers, the SS Panzer group, Das Reich had terrorised towns and villages, none more so than Oradour-sur-Glane, on their race north to reinforce the German army engaging the Allies on the beaches of Normandy. A journey that could have been made in three days took over two weeks, thanks to the selfless bravery and actions of the French Resistance, Jedburgh units and the SAS. Once Das Reich and other units entered the plains of the Loire region, the RAF and USAAF took over with aerial attacks. Had the 100,000 Nazi troops with their heavy weapons reached Normandy in the three days expected, the outcome could have been very different.

How terrible that those leaders of Das Reich were not tried for war crimes!! Really enjoyed this video and I am an avid WW2 history buff and never heard about the town and its occupants that were destroyed by those animals!! Thank you

'they' say: history should be remembered, so that the same thing won't happen again..... but alas, as you say "...but of course it has, and continues to...". by a strange quirk, the worst of human behaviours sometimes bring out the best in people.
but yes, a fitting tribute by the French, to leave that place as was, and not turn it into a 'Memorial Theme Park'....

What a fine piece of work Roy. I'm in Canada and had never heard of this place. I'm kind of like you when I come across a historical site when bike riding or travelling by car--I like to learn about the history of the place.

Excellently done Roy. I have an interest in WW1 & WW2 history so found it very interesting. I had read about Oradour-sur-Glane and the atrocity that took place, and credit to the French for keeping the village as a memorial to the victims. Thanks for taking the time to do the video.

@@RideWithRoy I understand, but we must NEVER forget these days, and the sacrifices that " ordinary people" as well as our armed forces, made to stand up to such awful fascists and bullies.
