I don't really like using tripods. They're fantastic tools, and help produce great images, but they disrupt my workflow and slow me down. That's not to say you shouldn't use one, and there are times when I couldn't be without mine, but generally - I don't like it.

Lots of people suggesting I utilise the quick release plate. In other words, not use the tripod. I agree :)
Also, anyone else ever seen a tractor do a backflip?
Every time I leave the camera at home.
Only on the tele.
didn't actually see it, but my friend was killed on one doing that when he was 13 cleaning the tare out of a potato cellar in Idaho...
Almost in today's Top Gear.
Yep, trying to pull another tractor and trailer out of a ditch. Fortunately driver unharmed, he had to buy new underpants. Happy to take your tripod off your hands if you’re not going to use it. Really enjoy your videos, both content and individual style.
Brilliant video James. Now hand hold and take the Aurora 🤣
Get me some whisky, and I'll have a go! :)
The reasons you gave are why I switched mostly to using a monopod. I prefer handheld, but I'm not quite steady enough most of the time. About the only time I use a tripod is at family gatherings to get the group shot that I have to be in or video, of course. 🙂Also, this one was definitely worth 5 more absolutely nothings. I know it isn't much, but I guess you could get a couple of coffees or something.
Thanks so much Gene! Funny you say that - I'm going to start experimenting more with a monopod :)
I remember reading about an occasion when the police and helicopter were called out for a man carrying a rifle over his shoulder - turned out to be a photographer with a tripod 😄
"Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a mental disorder of the neurodevelopmental type. It is characterized by problems paying attention, excessive activity, irrational dislike of tripods or difficulty controlling behavior which is not appropriate for landscape photographers." - from Wikipedia ;-)
Say again?
You really should be a photographic comedian....oh wait you already are! Great info, please continue to give us great substance. Love your channel, one of your original subscribers.
Cheers Robert :)
You're using a tripod with a QUICK RELEASE plate, why not use it? That's what it's for 😀
Then your tripod is still set up to capture the sunset when you've finished trying to capture anything and everything that's going on around you 👍
I decided to ditch the whole thing all together, especially with decent IBIS :)
I take the half way approach (well, 1/3 really) and use a monopod. Multiple uses: walking stick, sheep repeller, dog controller, child prodded to get them up the hills, undergrowth beater and occasionally, I sit my camera on it.
Two cameras - one round the neck for candid... :) just saying.... we are photographers and its the law we have to have more camera's than a tourist :p
😂
It‘s never to late to start breaking the law.
IBIS can be your friend with all this situation - coupled with multiple profile settings for different purposes - I shoot Sony so I am spoiled for both.
My second camera is usually busy filming me missing shots. But a third... :)
That was my first thought when I saw the video. Wedding photographers carry 2, probably a lot of sports shooters and journalists also. The second camera videoing yourself doesn’t count.
a video that starts outside and ends outside??
Maybe he's using a green screen?
haha! Incredible isn't it.. :)
what a time to be alive.
I wish there was a tripod head mount for a bean-bag, so you can just rest the camera lens on the tripod for steady shots, but you weren't attached all the time. I searched but couldn't find any.
Totally can relate, I photograph birds a lot and many of my birding friends use tripod, many shots would have been lost with a tripod. The only time I use one is for night and long exposure photography
Good video again.
I also don't like to carry a tripod around and even if I do, I seldom use it. I think with your Lumix cameras with IBIS you don't really need it if your not doing a long exposure, too.
But consindering your story: You could frame the original shot and just take the camera of the tripod with the quickrelease plate and put it back after. I get your point though.
Have a great one =)
Cheers!
Nice vid mate, keep up the helpful tips and great work!
IF the main thing is the fear of missing potential other shots, it might actually healthy to use one. Process, deliberately, concentration, Mindfull, purpose, etc. However, with modern cameras and stabilisation, I wonder what the actual need is besides long exposures. The weigh quite a bit and are a hassle. Also, they mentally constrain you.
I think that I have just resigned to the fact that I would not attempt the photograph the girl being attacked by seagulls. I would just enjoy it watching it happen (enjoy?! Yeah I think I would...) whilst releasing the shutter on the good light on the shard.
David Dixon I agree.
If I were shooting at The Shard, I would be using my best lens for that job, and it's entirely unsuitable for shooting damsels in distress and for shooting sandshoe tossers.
I sometimes carry two bodies though.
Thanks for sharing your interesting pov mate, helpfull as always
Monopod/walking stick type with quick disconnect?
I am similar to you in the sense I rarely use a tripod (although I ironically own 3 tripods and 3 mini tripods - figures...). A good photo does not need to be tack sharp. It needs to draw someone in, and hopefully tell a story. Most the time I go hiking or traveling I use a 24-240mm lens on a full frame body and get plenty of detail hand held (Even to the point where I have printed them at 30" by 20"). Again - I don't want to miss shots or faff around with changing lenses. Where I do use tripods are for situations where I specifically need long shutter speeds, or I have gone to specifically shoot something, or I want to be in the picture. It's similar to the lens situation - I do carry some primes that give me options to get super sharp images if I really want to slow the entire workflow down. I think you should try a superzoom.... it's very freeing....
"A good photo does not need to be tack sharp" I couldn't agree more!
With your G9 and its incredible IBIS, you won't need tripods much except for the 80 MP high res mode. I think you are set.
How about carrying 2 cameras? One for the tripod, and one for those opportunity shots? Use something like an OM-D EM5II with a 14-140 lens. Not big and bulky, but ready for anything that pops up.
Jeffrey Beigie go mirrorless lol
ClifFANTASTIC For landscape photography, there's no inherent advantage to mirrorless cameras. The presumed advantages of the Sony A7 series have nothing to do with their being mirrorless.
Great points and love your sense of humor!
I agree 100%. Im a handheld shooter as far too lazy to carry a tripod. I even purchased a monopod and found that also slows me down. Sod it. Handheld it is....
With the crazy stabilization in my em1.2 (and dual is) I don't really use tripod anymore and the mono-pod is a thing of past. I get the mono-pod for night photography and some bracketing else hand held even at 840mm equivalent.
I carry my tripod with me in case I need it, but most of the time I'm hand held. Then again I carry a lot in my bag that only gets used 2% of the time but if I don't bring it, I'll end up needing it
True enlightenment is the ability to hand hold a 3 minute exposure without camera shake. Tripods are for shaky people 😂
haha! Easy!
I got a light tripod which I carry collapsed and use it like a handle for the camera. It is light enough to hold everything with my left hand, while adjusting the dials with the right hand.
Hey James, I wasn't aware you lived in Sydney... it would be great to see you back here some day. Really enjoying the channel. Keep it up!
Also, if your primary purpose is to capture landscape shots, then obviously you can't expect to be "ready" for any other types of situations that require fast acting. So carry 2 cameras, or maintain your purpose for the type of photography you intended to capture at that moment. We cannot sadly do both simultaneously (Unless you do a timelapse or long exposure and run off to do some street portraits!).
Second is usually busy filming me missing shots, maybe I could get a third though... :)
I really enjoy your videos - you have a unique style that is really refreshing. Keep up the good work. I too mostly let the tripod stay at home.
Now, a question for your next Q&A video:
You sometimes mention that you often bracket your shots. Could you tell us a bit more about how and why you do that? Do you use exposure or focus bracketing? Do you bracket by 3, 5 or more shots? Can you get your shots properly aligned if you are shooting handheld?
Looking forward to more videos from you,
Greetings from little Denmark
I agree; tripods have a place for certain types of photography at certain times. They are NOT a daily requirement for most other kinds of photography and can (and should) be left at home. If you are a travel photographer, you will lose count of the number of places around the world you visit which either (a) ban tripods altogether or (b) charge a fee for bringing them in. Pretty much the only time I use one personally is in astrophotography, to be honest.
Still, you have made the quaint choice to live in Manchester (like my MiL) so perhaps a tripod for self-defence is another possible requirement...! ;-)
And just for clarity, what did you place your video camera on when shooting this video? 🤔😃
yep, 2 tripods for a video about not liking tripods... :)
well it's a pain to carry them around but it's necessary for lots of reasons...
Great video as always James. What is the tripod being used in this video ?
That one is a real mish-mash of parts - most similar to a 3 legged thing though :)
Awesome content😊 what type of camera do you use?
Looks like you specialize in broad landscapes in good light - yep, no need for tripod. When they are required: heavy lenses, night, indoor, macro, etc.
„Yes, don’t eat chips when there’s seagulls around.“
James Popsys
Another downside of using a tripod in the city: you're gonna get kicked out. Every. Single. Time.
I've brought a three legged thing with a built-in mono pod. Excellent for the city.
I hear you! :)
I use square filters for my landscape photography, so a tripod is a must
You got one fellow tripod hater as well and I couldn't agree more about everything you said about tripods.I also live in a city and tripods are useless in that kind of environment.I do own one Joby and and one monopod and that's it...I couldn't force myself do get more...and I'm very outdoor guy.
One question for the Q&A:
I am coming from a just normal country in mainland Europe. I thought about traveling a really exotic country with my camper van for about two weeks this year: Great Britain. Can you tell me to which 5 areas I should travel to? To see great nature and of course taking some photos (all with a tripod). How many percent of rainy days do we have to expect approximately?
How does the sound of a shutter go again?
I own one, but never bothered taking it out :-)
Worried about missing the shot James? Just carry a spare m43 camera! Some of the older Panasonics are tiny!
James, I have a question. Now that you're on the M43 train, have you ever thought about buying a speed booster to make use of your full frame lenses and gain extra stops? I get that it defeats the lighter kit point you have I know, but has it ever been a thought you've had?
Also, what did you have for breakfast today?
What lenses do you use, and where would you use them, Landscape, street etc.
Hey James! Never seen a tractor do a backflip, no🤣 Another great video and awesome tips for photography from someone I respect the opinion of! 👍 Q: did you get the g9 and how are you getting along with it? Take care
Thanks mate!
Man, i love your humor
Couldn’t all of that be said for camera settings? I know I’ve botched shots because I’m setup for landscape and suddenly something “wildlife” goes off next to me...
True, although it's one less thing to think about I guess :)
Do you calibrate your lenses to make sure they are not back or from focusing? If so, what device or process do you use?
All mirrorless cameras have sensor-based (be it contrast or phase detection) AF system so they just can't have the back/front focus issues
Alex Adrianov oh wow. That might be another good reason to switch! I did not know that. Wonder why that isn’t talked about more with mirrorless cameras?
Robert F Gardner Probably because it's rarely a problem. When I wondered about whether I had the problem, I did some research and decided that it was most likely me.
It can be a problem when you want extremely shallow depth of field. Mostly, landscape photographers rarely do that.
Headshots at F1.4, I've decided, isn't my thing.
Nope, no calibrating for me :)
I honestly tough he was going to toss the shoe at you :v
Really sounds like you need to use (or learn about using) a Manfrotto quick release plate. 1 Lever and your camera is off. It's also more secure than the arca swiss clamping mechanism.
In other words, take the camera off the tripod. That's what I've done, permanently :)
It would be nice for your Q&A or later video maybe to talk about night photography and why not give us your thoughts about micro 4/3 sensor calpability in low light and if you are still happy with the results you get out of camera "GH9" is that right. thumb up!
Thanks! :)
I’m surprised at the number of people who have taken this video literally. Surely, the “fake story” should have been a hint.
You'd think wouldn't you mate :)
I know what you mean about using a tripod in a city, use a tripod almost anywhere within the City of London and you'll be moved on by security guards before you get it levelled, but tripods, monopods, bean bags and hand holding are all useful skills to develop, horses for courses as the saying goes.
True - And I've been there Sid :) Always fun watching a Hi-Vis marching towards you!
If you are taking a shot that requires a tripod, use your phone, or a digital compact for the street stuff, random stuff that appears nearby.. that way covered from both angles..
Just a different perspective.
Hi James
I am curious. Why not use your G85 that you have with you and filming this video to shoot any 'street' style photos at the time as you need. Leaving your G9 on the tripod pointed at your landscape subject waiting for the light? Just a thought.
Cheers Brian, that's usually the case - and it's IBIS convinced me that a tripod mostly wasn't needed too :)
I hate lugging around a tripod. Of course for video....makes sense.
thomas heaton never shoots without tripod
It really depends on the type of shooting you do. I get that it get in the way of spontaneity but I’m rubbish at being spontaneous...
What is that red 'tag' handing off your g9? I've seen so many people with it and would love an explanation
It's a quick release for a Peak Design camera strap.

I’m from Macc! How did you find it? I heard it got destroyed by a storm recently. Not been home in 2 and half years. 😃👍🙈
Loved it mate, but yeah lots of trees have taken a beating :(
You've lived in Sydney?? Where abouts? I'm from Sydney!
New subbie here and I may or may not have just binge watched a handful of your videos just now to feed my newly acquired interest in photography.
+KittyMcKitty Ahh Thanks so much 🙂 Mostly in Manly, little stint in Bronte. Typical Brit ☺️
Typical indeed haha but hey as you have probably figured those are typical spots for good reason. Anyway, keep up the great content :)
Okay, James, besides the fact that I am utterly..............utterly devastated that the hat does not make an appearance, and I see that the quick release comments have already been addressed, I can see a totally awesome way around this predicament.
Bear with me, but how about this.....
......take 3 cameras, and 3 tripods out with you every time you go out. Ta daa! Not only do you get and awesome shot of the Shard, BUT, you also get woman attacked by seagulls and man throwing shoe!!!
You're welcome. (If there's a tractor doing a back flip at the same time, then sorry, I have no answer to that as 4 cameras and 4 tripods would just be ridiculous)
You are a wise person.
Thank you. My Mother says I'm special, but i'll take wise too.
haha! You've nailed it :)
I agree, tripods are a pain. However, sometimes a tripod can be useful, especially for long exposures. Mostly it is fine to go without a tripod, your camera is a G9, the stabilisation is great. Be free! By the way, are you drinking too much coffee? You seemed a little hyper toward the end of the video :-)
0:03 you look like Dziga Vertov in "Man With a Movie Camera" while holding tripod like this :D
Question for the the Q&A video: i'm gonna buy the 80d soon
Do you think i should buy it with the kit lens or a different one? I'm gonna be shooting landscape and portraits plus videos so i need one that is good for all of these and then i'll buy more lenses later 😊
Ramy Kabalan I bought an 80D with the 18-135 USM lens announced at the same time.
Àt that time I already owned a 6D and a lot of EF mount lenses.
The USM lens focusses much faster than the STM version, it's quiet enough I can't hear it focus.
You could also consider a 50mm STM lens for portraits and the 10-18 STM if you want to vlog.
From another Canon user's point of view (I am using a 70D and an EOS M): If you want to use a single lens for all of this, you want something like the Sigma 17-50mm f/2.8 EX DC OS HSM.
A kit lens like the EF-S 18-55mm IS STM won't be good for portraits (widest aperture too narrow) nor video (aperture changes when zooming).
The Sigma would be a good compromise, it also features an image stabilizer and is very affordable, although heavier than the kit lens. The other cons would be that the AF is noticeably loud when doing video work. The internal mic of the camera would definitely pick that up.
Other than that, the already mentioned Canon EF-S 10-18mm IS STM and the Canon EF 50mm STM would each perform better for landscape or portraits respectively but you would end up missing the important focal lengths between 19 and 49mm.
For photography I like ~22mm and ~30mm best on Canon APS-C cameras. You would also want to use something in that area for general purpose filming. I love my Sigma 30mm DC HSM Art f/1.4 and use it most of the time, but I also own a couple of other lenses (and also still the aforementioned 17-50mm for when I want/need to be more flexible).
Jens Jakob The kit lenses don't do shallow depth of field very well at shorter focal lengths, but that doesn't make them bad for portraits. If you are working in a studio, you're likely working at F8-12 where there is no problem. Outside, look for an appropriate background and do environmental or semi environmental portraits.
Most of the video I've been watching recently involves vloggers talking to their cameras or showing us where they are. Kit lenses are well able to do those.
Like the kit lenses, the EF-S 10-18 and 10-22 have varying maximum apertures, it doesn't seem to bother the vloggers I see.
As you say, the 50mm STM lens is a good but pretty cheap lens to learn about shallow depth of field.
Have you consider bring 2 camera? 1 on the tripod and the 2nd camera on you so you have a camera ready if needed.
Omg. You missed the bear walking behind you. 😂
Question: Did you have your blogging camera on a tripod? So now carry round two tripods?
Also: I’m in Snowdonia hiking next weekend, any tips for good places to visit? Can’t remember the name of the bit we are hiking 🤔
haha, yep 2 tripods - nightmare. Check out Tryfan - my favourite mountain :)
You could to with a donkey to carry all that gear. or maybe a well trained sheep? haha
Will be sure to check it out. Cheers. Our friends are planning a hike up Cadair Idris.
What is the name of the pass BTW?
I note that you didn't say you don't use them. ;-) I use them only when I have to (e.g. product photography).
Back in the day when sensor ISOs couldn't go too high, tripods would make sense. But now with IBIS and OIS, there is less need.
I agree completely and feel less of an alien now. I couldn't say how often I've took one out and couldn't face staying still long enough to set it up. I need to keep getting up and down hillsides and rocks to explore every inch of where I've gone out for the day. I do use one occasionally, but I'm not a big fan of slow shutter speed waterfalls etc so unless it's dark I get by without.
Everybody is different of course, apart from identical twins.. They are exactly the same. Exactly.
Great video, as usual. Another reason for not liking tripods is that to get anything half decent costs as much as a camera!!! You talked about Gobe filters a little while ago. Are you still using them? Do you like them? (If me, Lee filters are just ridiculously expense - unless they give a huge discount to people on a pension that I don't know about!)
Thanks! And yep, love the Gobe filters I have :)
James, would it make any sense to carry around a second camera? With the smaller form factor and easy portability why not? I am handicapped so I always use a tripod. I keep the legs together (like a mono pod) for those times when I might come across the birds and chips event. I also default to automatic and just start shooting when things get too crazy. My concentration is on keeping a stable shot. I know that is not very advanced but neither am I. Just working within my world.
Moonpie
It does and I do - that sounds like a great set up too :)
Could you share with us the photo of the hawk attacking the sheep?
I'm hoping to sell it to Attenborough...
How about a monopod (preferably one with feet at the bottom) instead?
That could work :)
I have a travel tripod and a second camera in case I see another shot.
The solution to your dilema, is something that will cause you to carry more weight in your pack. Have a second camera body and lens for the unexpected dynamic shots you say you'd miss because of the setup time involved in recomposing you referenced as an example/excuse of not using a tripod. Considering it's not a bad idea to have a backup camera body with a lens might be worth considering. Given that you went from full frame to micro 4/3 to reduced weight in your pack, I get having a second camera is not your thing it's not your ideal solution. Just a thought.
I've learnd two things today with your Video:
First: It seems, that seagulls around London only attack tourists. Most likely they are trained to do so.
Second: I've forgotten what it was while writing this comment.
Thanks for not killing anyone around you with this "Devastating Tripod of Tridamnation" what would be a perfect unique item in a random roleplaygame (i would call PhotoRPG).
- Kevin
Carry a second camera with a super zoom (like the 14-140) around your neck, or on your Peak Design. Problem solved!! The GX9 makes a pretty good mate for the G9 if you don't want to go the expense of a matching body.
I’m with you James - cant stand wrestling with the tripod and love the flexibility of moving quickly !
Yes. Life happens too fast for a tripod.... usuaually.
Wouldn't a monopod be the answer to use within crowded areas?... I mean, other than using a quick shutter-speed. - The only thing that would still be difficult is a longer exposure, as it can still move side to side of course. But at least a monopod is something to stabilize and balance with. - It just doesn't stick out all over the place and you can walk with it straight up alongside your body.
I agree tripods slow you down but I think they are essential for landscape photography when you want maximum detail. IS and IBIS go close but aren’t a perfect substitute.
Ahh cool you’re from Manchester, I’m pretty close by! Currently in the town they call Burnley. I like what you’re doing with these videos. I’ve been thinking to do some myself, that’s all I’m doing just ‘thinking’ no doing. Peace and love.
Cheers mate! :)
Sounds like you need a Panasonic ZS200, Sony RX100, Fuji X100F, or Ricoh GR as a ready to go backup
Without the bulk and weight of a tripod, you're more likely to walk more, go to less accessible places and get more interesting shots. With a tripod you're more likely to shoot close to eye level and get less interesting shots. Tripods have their uses, but I think too many people use them too often when they don't really need to.
Jason Shallcross There is absolutely no reason a tripod should be set to eye level, unless eye level unless the best artistic choice, or your legs are handicapped by too many years. My preferred height is knee level, but sometimes much higher to clear instructions.
Knee-height is likely to be more stable. When was the last time you saw someone use a tripod with the camera less than knee-height? I think there's a lot of enthusiasts out there who just use a tripod because they think it makes them look like a "proper" photographer and that it will somehow guarantee that they take better photos.
I think people should use a tripod when they can't do handheld, rather than do handheld when they can't use a tripod.
Jason Shallcross I use a tripod because I want to get the camera in my idea of the best position, and then to stay put. I want the camera level side to side, front to back.
I went out today, I took two TS-E lenses and a 180mm macro lens, the last in the offchance I might find some wildflowers.
I photographed off a jetty, the camera just high enough to clear the fence. I chose the TS-E 24, levelled the camera, shifted the front of the lens up and down to find the right place.
+James Popsys I must have missed the part in the video when you asked people to explain to you why your approach is wrong for you and tell you how you should instead be shooting. Nope, just can't find it. hmmm
haha, always the same Gene! Opinionated photographers, who'd have thought it :)
Q for Q&A: Where direction are you taking your photography. Are you leaning towards travel/lifestyle now?
Honestly i have a nice cheap tripod, never knew all the stuff they can do. I hate carrying it. Honestly i don't use it cause i am lazy... LOL Love your Videos.
I used to be pretty ok using a tripod now and then. Mostly for vlogging myself. But, now I am totally afraid to leave the house with one for fear that I might end up killing someone. Never thought of that. Hmmm....🤔😜
Anyone want to buy a lightly used tripod? It’s good for catching tractors do backflips. And, ...weaponry apparently. Owner takes full responsibility. 😉
A tractor doing a backflip... That sure would be awesome to see, no matter how it's done.
For me, despite knowing I'll eventually wind up getting a tripod at some point, I'm not really a fan of them not because of their rigidity, but because it means another couple of pounds of gear hanging off of my back. Surprised you didn't mention how tripods have a bad habit of attracting a LOT of attention from various sources (police and/or security), and how quite a few places they're banned...
I've stopped saying that because weirdly people don't believe it :)
what's your take on IR/FS photography
I'm yet to dabble.. :)
Carry a decent point and shoot in your pocket. Nope, not an expensive camera, but you can get a quick shot off, and as long as you do your part, a good one.
The problem is you, not the tripod. You are wondering too much ;)
Quick release plate ?
Inconsolable. hahahhaha!!! Love your vids man.
More support therefore for taking both a mirrorless camera as well a DSLR. All good videos though.
Grab your phone and shoot the street stuff if they happen whilst your main camera is on the tripod ...
or y`know ,get one of those tiny APS-C cams like a X100 or X70 and have that around your shoulder ^_~
Anyway enough joking. I don't like tripods in general either. I lived in Japan for a while. And everybody shoots with tripods there even in bright daylight of street scenes where you could easily shoot 1/4000 with F/8 (i.e everything will be sharp..) I only ever use tripods for long exposures to get light trails. And then i just resign to the fact that i`m focusing purely on that and nothing else.
omg this guy is hilarious LMAO so funny!!! loved your video!!!!
I don't like using a tripod either. Does not suit my style and what I shoot.
