@MissBetsyLu I'm in zone 9b specifically northern California 😎 I even started the seeds outside in late March early april so the temps weren't regulated and it was getting down into the 40s at night.
I planted them for the first time this year and HOLY SMOKES! They are the biggest, most healthy plants in my garden. They're so huge I keep having to tie them back because they're leaning over try to hold hands with the tomatoes on my patio.
I have SO many seeds that I couldn’t justify ordering more right now. I’m glad that I got to see you open your seeds at least! I love how you explain the plant life cycle. You make plants come alive and have wishes and intentions. I feel like I’m watching an Animal Kingdom documentary. “The chard sees the hungry bunny and releases chemicals to make its leaves bitter. As the bunny takes a bite and hops away, the chard breathes a sigh of relief, knowing her seeds will be on their way soon.” 🤣🤣🤣 You’re the best Jess ❤
Same here! I am buying more for my cutflower & vegetable farm (I sell at farmers markets) but as for my personal garden, I can't justify buying more! Lol
Yes! I have thousands (literally over 30,000) for this fall garden just from previous seed collecting🤣 we only need about 14,500 to get everything fully planted so we are set! Can’t wait to order new varieties for next spring though!
It thrills my heart that Jess is feeling so much better :) I too was extremely ill on death's doorstep, and the Lord led me to go carnivore. I fully healed with a year of carnivore, and even healed my thyroid (and I was on tons of thyroid meds for years), and no longer need any meds. After a few years of mostly carnivore (I would eat roasted brussel sprouts, and other CLEAN veggies...anything God gives us for food), my body started craving some carbs. I started added some CLEAN carbs (like italian pasta once per week, NO PROCESSED AMERICAN CARBS) back in, and my body was very happy again. I'm still mostly carnivore, but it's clear our bodies tell us what it needs as we move through this life...we just have to pay attention to what it tells us :) Your content helps me so so much, THANK YOU! This is my first year trying a Fall/Winter garden :)
37:13 Rutabagas are almost never seen around Oregon, in my 57 years of life at any rate. I have eaten them only once that I remember, and that was raw in a salad. I had no idea what these little orange squares that looked like cheddar cheese were, so I asked the chef owner of the little Italian restaurant we were in. He had procured a couple of bowling ball sized rutabagas from a local farmers market. I’ve seen them in the grocery stores before, but no one I know buys them. I’m putting them on my list of new things to try. =)
To anyone else on a fixed income and has little to no yard and wants to grow your own food this is what I did. I purchased a Tower Garden system and put it in my kitchen corner. It’s 108$ a month interest free for 1 year. My 16X16’ backyard has been given to my 13 hens and 1 rooster my chickens are bantam Cochin and started laying a few weeks ago, I’m getting 10-13 eggs a day. I no longer have to purchase any vegetables from the store. By doing this I have become more self sufficient I grow potatoes in grow bags on my patio along with melon plants. In my tower garden I’m growing 40 plants in 2 square feet of space, here’s what I’m growing: Dwarf tomatoes x3 Space maker cucumbers x2 Hunny Nut squash Zucchini Lettuce 3 plants Spinach x3 Calabrian peppers x2 Lunchbox peppers x2 Acorn squash Strawberries x6 Parsley Fennel x4 Butterbush Squash Dwarf peas x2 Sage Plus 6 seedlings I just started including celery, kohlrabi, Pablo lettuce.
@@miekvandervloet9415 I got the tower garden home with the cage and lights, it has 32 spots for plants so I added one extension kit which brought me up to 40. The cage definitely helps support the plants especially when heavy with fruit. HTH
We gardeners do love our seed orders! Looking at the package then opening with lots of excitement and lovingly taking each packet out and planning how we will grow. Thanks for sharing the joy with us all.
During lockdown had some seed that was almost two decades old with 9/10 germination. Had plants coming out of my ears as I had “compensated” for the age of the seed. Note: I have had more difficulty the past two years. Found that the tap water has a new chemical trio that is designed to impede germination and plant growth in the water system. Now use rainwater or water from the burke water filter and germination is on the uptick.
My Mom used to take cooked carrots, potatoes and turnip and mash them together with butter and salt and pepper. Heaven. Comfort food. If you put sharp cheddar cheese on top it is even better.
Watching someone “unbox” their seed haul is always fun! You get another perspective about what works and doesn’t work - as well as WHY! Best wishes from Kate in Olympia, WA - 4:30 am, 9/3/2023.
Hearing you talk about the excitement of seeds totally broke me. I've got a lot going on right now. And I've gotten a few seed orders that I wasn't even excited about because I'm so depressed. I haven't even been able to watch my regular favorites on YT as they post. This too shall pass. But man everything hurts right now. Thanks for being such a beacon of light for so many people.
I’m praying for you, that you would feel comfort and your burden would be lifted. You will be excited about the simple things again. Life won’t always feel like drowning. ♥️♥️
Jess, I've watched and listened to you go over the GMO, hybrid, heirloom talk many times, and I have to say, it never gets old because there are always new gardeners watching for the first time that may not know about these things. Knowledge is wisdom when it comes to growing your own food. Keep up the good work! Nice haul by the way!
No matter how many seeds I've already gotten, your unboxing always makes me want to pull out the catalog and get more. LOL! I literally just opened a box of garlic bulbs and fall/spring garden seeds.
This was fun! I went through the entire Botanical Interests catalog while listening to Jess and bought a few things. The free shipping is great! And yes, I like supporting Kevin (and Jacques, of course) in their endeavors. Epic Gardening is in my USDA zone and their advice has been extremely useful.
Thank you for keeping my mind occupied while I process tomatoes. This is my first year having enough tomatoes from my own garden. Makes me happy. God bless!
Sweet Jess, I place a very large order with Botanical Interests, and Johnny's last night. This weekend, I'll be ordering from Baker Creek, Eden Brothers, and Hudson Valley. I'm so excited already for planting in the spring. I have to tell you, I ordered Celosia seeds (Reien, and Chief mix) after you toured your garden with Celosia. It is gorgeous!!!! Tomorrow, I plan on digging up sweet potatoes. I truly hope we have a good harvest. I'm praying for a healthy harvest. I'll take what ever has grown, and learn from it. Blessings to you, and your family.
I smiled when you talk about the swiss chard. Here in South Africa its a staple food in most households. We call it spinach although most people dont even realize it is actually swiss chard. "Real" spinach is way more expensive! I grow the rainbow swiss chard in my garden all year round. We make cream "spinach". I batch cook it for the freezer or blanch and freeze in balls to throw into different dishes.
I completely agree with you. Also from South Africa and we love growing our rainbow swiss chard and making creamed spinach is also a staple in our home.
I am in Washington State, and have been buying my seeds from Botanical Interest for the last 2 years. I have been very happy with the germination, and love the catalog.
I love Botanical Interest seed packets too, they're so beautiful! After I plant them I keep the packets and make junk journals out of them. Such beautiful artwork. ❤
I have made several orders with MI based both on your recommendation, and the fact that I watch his channel often and like his content. Since he started his end of season sale, I have acquired seed that I might not have tried for the BC price (I do love them, but they are pricier).
welcome Jess to my GOLDEN BEET FAN CLUB!! Golden Beets are my Favorite Garden crop and are Delicious with S & P a little avocado oil and slow roasted! Garden Candy for SURE!!😊
I ❤ botanical interests and I was super excited when Kevin purchased the company because we already use his seed starting trays too and we watch his channel. I have always had almost 100% germination. If something didn’t germ it’s usually an error I have made. I will purchase from other companies but BI is my first choice because they put the best direction and information on their packets. I need all the help I can get even after 20+ years of gardening. 😂
I thought I would rewatch this as I get ready to plan my spring garden for next year. I love your enthusiasm for seeds and the garden. I have just been gifted some grow light that were left in a space that was rented to a relative. That is a blessing in Oregon where the sun doesn't always shine.
I love these kind of videos so much. EPIC GARDENING BOUGHT BOTANICAL INTERESTS?!?!? I haven’t been getting his videos in my feed. That’s amazing for him!!!!
Thank you so much about telling me this company has pictures of what the seedlings looks like!!!! It made a world of difference because i planted some hardy annuals and was wondering if i had flowers or weeds 😂
You will not be disappointed in the amount of fragrance that comes off the “High Scent” Sweet Pea blooms. I have 90-ish varieties of Sweet Pea seeds in my seed collection (blessed to be able to grow them like weeds here) and the only one that rivals it in my opinion is “April in Paris.” They look & smell so similar I can’t tell them apart. Enjoy!💐
I like your seed haul. I just placed an order with Botanical Interest a few hours before seeing this. Needed some flower seeds and picked up a few varieties for the veggie garden. Great suggestion buying seeds now and taking advantage of savings. When everyone is buying their seeds for the spring garden in the dead of winter, I am sowing my seeds for the garden. Some seeds; artichoke, asparagus and some flowers, need 12 weeks before your last frost date or may need to be started and planted before your last frost date. Since I am in zone 8a, this means starting some of my seeds in December, more in January and so forth. I need to get better at succession sowing and having transplants ready like Charles Dowding and James Prigioni.
I just got my seed haul from Botanical Interests yesterday! So excited. Love this company. Great service, packaging, AND I have had 100% germination rate from their seeds. Love this video! I get so excited with seeds and planning planting them. Even if it is someone else! Thank you for your channel. Makes me think outside the box.
Loved your explanation of why crops might be very sweet and delectable at one stage of development and then become bitter and not delicious at another stage. Kind of knew all that, but hearing it all at one time made so much sense - you are such a good teacher, even for those of us who have been at this for many, many years.
I guess I need to place an order this big... I store all my seeds in topless BI boxes and I NEED that big long one!!! It was also fun to see that we're trying some of the same things this fall. Can't wait to follow along!
Here's another side benefit of those seed "expiration dates." Community seed libraries will get past-dated seeds donated by brick-and-mortar stores at the end of the year and you can get the seeds for free. I've picked up a lot of BI seeds that way.
I love in Florida - zone 8b-ish - and when the cilantro starts to volunteer in my garden, I know it's getting cool enough to start my fall/winter garden!
You might want to try growing Popalo aka summer cilantro because Popalo grows well in heat and we love cilantro but I truly prefer Popalo for salsas in the summer. We bought our seeds from growing your greens out of California, 10 years ago and the Popalo volunteers every year.
This is personally quite timely! Just this morning, I was thinking that I’m not as excited about gardening at this point, but I’m suddenly exhilarated at the thought of choosing seeds for next spring!
I live in northern Michigan- sweet peas grow along our roadsides, up and down, a lot! My grands pick me bouquets all July long…. I just placed an order! There’s free shipping right now, until the 5th. Thank you Jess
THANK YOU so much! Knowing how you use/cook/prepare the food is vital for me to understand. Fantastic video! Just placed a big order of seeds based on this unboxing and information! Thanks again.
Absolutely love the way you discuss the seeds you get. I definitely need to order som more seeds. Didn’t know about the lettuces, etc that prefer to be grown in the winter. Being in the high desert in Southern California gives me the time to grow all this stuff. Just really need a bigger garden. Lol thank you so very much for all the knowledge you have just given me. ❤I just placed my order of $54 to the Botanical Seed Company and ordered my catalogue too. Thank you
I recently created a beet salad recipe that’s sooooo good! ❤️ Thinly slice one beet, one apple , and one large carrot. Add the juice of one lemon, a drizzle of olive oil, 1/2 tsp of cinnamon, 1/4 tsp ground clove, and 1/2 tsp of ground allspice. Toss it all together and enjoy! It tastes just like Autumn and the color of it is gorgeous. 😍
I think you will love growing onions from seed! It is easy to grow so many and easy to save seeds from some that bolt to grow again the next year! And makes them like a penny an onion! I can't wait to see how they do for you!
Rapinni is a bitter Italian broccoli. (Best sautéed with Italian sausage). Sprouting broccoli is a regular broccoli, but without the head. Very different.
You’re so full of information. Thanks, Jess! I can’t stop being amazed that Kevin from Epic Gardening owns that company now. I’ve been growing those seeds for years because they’re the ones my local Ace Hardware sells. 💖
I bought all my seeds for the next whole year including this winter to next winter and probably another year because I have seed addiction problems a few months ago when I found a huge sale. The hubby thought I was nuts but I will save so much money from saying to myself No, I don't need to buy seeds when I see something I want. And I get to look at the seed packets. It's kinda like Christmas everyday to me lol.
I've fallen in love with botanical interests this year. On another note, was getting ready to plant the fall garden this weekend. Just checked the weather and its in the 100s all week ..again and i live in the desert...
Hey Jess- want to suggest that you try culantro. Tastes very close to cilantro. Looks completely different. I got a plant in the spring. Grew through the entire Florida summer. When it sends a stalk, cut it off and it'll keep making leaves. I've used it fresh and dehydrated some in case my plant has an unfortunate incident. It's been a game changer for me. Love the taste & the smell. And it grew through the whole FLORIDA SUMMER, still going strong. Wanted to mention it. Thank you for all you've taught me. Blessings.
A mini Christmas seeing someone elses’s seeds!❣️ I made the mistake of letting Swiss chard rainbow blend to go to seed. Boy, it made seeds! Now I have lots of little Swiss chard babies in two beds! I got a full sandwich bag of mixed seeds and the p,ants still had more!
I totally agree about the Golden Beets! They are sweeter and mild - I can even eat them raw, chopped in a salad. Botanical Interests is my favorite seed company, too. The artwork is gorgeous and the information is comprehensive, which I appreciate. I added some play sand to my raised beds where I grow carrots and had success with them. I am getting several types of smaller varieties (for example: squash, melons, lettuce) since I have limited space and want to get as much as I can out of it!
Fun thing that I do…I put my 7 month old in his bouncer and I will sit in front of him with my big seed purse and show him all of my seed packets and tell him all about each one 😆

Zone 8a gardener as well! ❤ N Louisiana
If you dont like broccoli rabe because of bitterness, try Yod Fah broccoli. Super sweet.
Highly anticipating this fall garden!!
I love watching you opening seed boxes!!! Then I go order new stuff too lol😊
It's definitely as exciting as opening toys :D We love that company as well!
Lol. More so!! Seeds last much longer than toys!!! Rofl !! many grand blessings everyone everywhere.
🎶We are seed swooning in the fall, we are seed swooning in the Spring… we all just like to grow almost everything! 😂😂😂🎶🥕🥔🧅🥬🥦🧄🫛
One of the mildest way to eat beets is fresh. My favorite way to eat them is to grate them over salad with feta and nuts with vinaigrette.
I pull up baker creek seed or botanical interests websites to watch ur seed talks n just order away. Guessing many others do too 😂
I live in northern Michigan- sweet peas grow along our roadsides, up and down, a lot!
That sounds delicious
A good haul. Some interesting varieties. I like to try something new every year - some fun things to consider in that group of seeds.
You are such a lovely woman. I watched this video twice😊❤ such a breath of fresh air.
I feel so valid in how I taste beets now 😂 I’m excited to try golden!
This has been driving me crazy ever since I first heard her say that!!!!
You’re so full of information. Thanks, Jess! I can’t stop being amazed that Kevin from Epic Gardening owns that company now. I’ve been growing those seeds for years because they’re the ones my local Ace Hardware sells. 💖
New subscriber here! I appreciate all the knowledge you share. I live in Texas, so it's good to know what I can grow! Those seed packets look amazing.
Love a good seed haul! Thanks for sharing.
They grow as weeds in Denmark but so does lupin and lilac trees 🥰😍
You could probably grow avocados in SC.😊
I loved your seed uhaul videos and your excitement about each seed package it make me happy to be gardening in the fall too.😊
Yes! Winter indeed!
I love the way you simplify the science behind why veggies are sweeter in the colder months! Makes it so easy to understand👏👏👏👏👏
Blessings.
A mini Christmas seeing someone elses’s seeds!❣️
I made the mistake of letting Swiss chard rainbow blend to go to seed. Boy, it made seeds! Now I have lots of little Swiss chard babies in two beds! I got a full sandwich bag of mixed seeds and the p,ants still had more!
OMG I love the recipes and everything you had to share! Very informative. Thank you!
A few minutes in and I literally had to hit pause and go grab a notepad to take notes. Great tips!
