Hey Jimbo, I got failed for doing 60km in a 80km zone because of a service car that had yellow flashing due to a broken car. Apparently you're supposed to go down to 40km when there's a service car with lights flashing yellow. I've never heard of this rule but your videos have helped me a lot and I'm going for my second test tomorrow! Hope I pass :)
Hello FoxyNick yes the rule came in a couple of years ago. If the speed limit is 80km or less you must slow down to 40km when passing emergency type vehicle. If the limit is above 80km you must slow down to a safe speed and give the emergency vehicle more space (changing lanes on multi lane roads). Best of luck tomorrow 🤞
Hi Jimbo, Thanks for your video! I prefer your previous videos. Specially when you are showing the examples. I prefer to see you in the car with the camera 😅 Thank you!
Hi Jimbo! Great videos, just a quick question. Do we need to keep both our hands on the steering wheel at all times? If so, how do you deal with hand locking while turning?
Hi Jimbo, Thanks for your great vidoes, it's very helpful. I have a question - the trainer who trains me now always complaint that I drove too slow and need to speed up (I was in speed of 40km/h in the 60 zone). My question in here, will i fail the speed management if I drive too low under the limit? I feel not confident to go fast as a new driver and there's house and cars parking around.
Hi Nguyen if you are more than 20 under the limit in non residential for no reason then yes it can become a fail for holding people up. Maybe try and go a bit quicker.
Hi Jimbo, a question about speed limits, I think in a previous video you said we should go 5km/hr below the speed limits, but if we find ourselves very close to the speed limit like going down a steep hill on a main road where our speed could increase quite quickly, is there any amount of leniency about whether we could go over the speed limit just by 1 or 2 km/hr as long as we are always under or very close to the speed limit or is it a strict requirement that we dont exceed the speed limit.
Hi Raymond if the examiner is convinced you are over the limit then you are out F5. It's quite easy to keep a car under speed limit. You just need to press the brake harder. Having said that though in the case of an analogue dial speedo the examiner is looking from an angle so they prob have to give a few Ks error due to what is called "parralax error". This is not them being lenient though. With digital speedos if it's 1km over you can be out. Examiners are human though so some may not issue F5 for just a brief 1km over. The best thing is to keep it under the limit. Back in my day we had to deal with clutch and gears you get it easy now since auto went mainstream. So no excuse keeping it under the limit.
Quick question say someone is about to jay walk and speed across the road what’s the required procedure do i drop my speed or stop when they start running across
The bottom line is that you don't want to hit them or look like you are about to hit them otherwise the examiner will intervene. So scan all the time and if someone is standing close to the road slow a bit preempting that they may cross. If they do then you won't need to brake so hard as you had already slowed.
Well those things take practice. Go out and specifically practice changing lanes without unnecessarily dropping speed. Take someone with you that can prompt you to speed up.
Hi Jimbo, Thank you so so much for these revelations cos they are more than teaching. Someone have asked this question but I didn’t see the reply Pls can I drive like 40 on 60 zone on test day without failing?
if the situation requires, if its good weather and the road is clear and youre going 40 in a 60 you will most likely be punished, but if the traffic is heavy or weather is bad you should be ok going a bit slower
Hi Jimbo, just a question about approaching roundabouts, do I need to slow down before the roundabout even if its free to go when observing the roundabout as I approach it? Im guessing that I would need to slow down when approaching the roundabout so that its safer and to avoid a large brake upon the roundabout that may be considered unsafe. Thanks for the amazing information from these videos
Hello Raymond yes you need to slow down prior to entering the roundabout for the reasons you gave. Also it makes it more comfortable for you and your passengers.
i'm not sure i fully understand your question, but you can't speed up to the new speed limit (in this case 60) until you pass the first sign displaying the new speed limit. it is still 50 until you cross the first sign/road marking saying 60.
Hi Jimbo, firstly thanks for your video. I have got my driving test tomorrow. My question is, as its the school holidays do I need to maintain the 40km/h speed limit? If not then what should be the ideal speed limit? My test location is Gregory hills. Cheers!
Hi Sumaiya there will be no 40 school zone as it is school holidays. You have to watch for the speed signs to know what speed limit it is. In summary Smeaton Grange is 60, Narellan residential is 50. Behind Bunnings Narellan is 50. Camden Valley Way is 80 from Gregory Hills down t Narellan McDonald's when it becomes 60. They have had a 40 workzone near Narellan Library where they have been building new foot paths. Best of luck tomorrow 🤞
Hi Jimbo, I just have a question about changing lanes and pedestrian crossings, I know in a previous video you said we would need to do 3 clicks on the indicator before changing lanes, but what if the gap is tight and I need to change lanes for a left or right turn that is close up ahead? Would the examiner be more lenient in these situations and allow fewer clicks like perhaps 1 or 2? In pedestrian crossings, are they always done at 25km/hr or do we only need to slow to 25km/hr if there is a sign indicating 25km/hr and can go faster through the pedestrian crossings if the speed is not indicated? Thanks so much for all the info
Hi Raymond re the lane change the examiner will give you sufficient time to make a turn so getting at least 3 flashes in won't be a problem. The 25km is when there is a yellow recommended warning sign displaying 25km at the crossing usually because their is a speed hump. If there is no speed hump and it's clear just lift off the accelerator a bit and check both sides.
@@thedrivingtestguynsw8424 Ah thanks for the lane change advice. Im still a bit unsure about the pedestrian crossings, what if there is a speed hump with yellow speed hump sign but no indicated speed on that sign? I know we should slow down for speed bumps but does it have to be all the way to 25km/hr or just slow down a bit is enough?
@@raymondqiu8202 Hi Raymond you will prob find that for most speed humps the most comfortable in speed is 25km. If it's a more shallow one and the vision is clear that there are no pedestrians near and there is no 25km sign then you could go a bit faster over it.
Hey Jimbo, when you see a workzone ahead sign. Do you drive 40 and under straight away. Or wait until it is near the actual workzone sign then you reduce speed to 40km/h and under?
Hello Valerie if you are in residential then do 50km/h. If its non residential then it's probably 60km. Preferably you really need be good at looking out for speed zones. Alternatively you could get an instructor to take you around the areas used for your chosen test centre and memorize them.
Sometimes when driving towards a normal standard pedestrian crossing, 2 or 3 meters before the actual pedestrian crossing there is a solid stop line. I am a bit confused do i stop behind it when there is people crossing or when there is no one crossing do i still have to completely stop?
Hi Jimbo, just 2 nitpicky questions, when diverging such as changing lanes or turning left and rights, how many clicks do I need to leave on the indicator, 3 clicks? or do I just start indicating 50m before turns and 3 clicks for lane changes? Second Question is how much distance do I leave in front of the car when stopping and when driving. I think in a previous video you said when stopping, leave enough to be able to see the tires of the car in front or even a little more but not quite sure about when driving behind somebody. Any answers would be appreciated! Thanks
Hi Raymond re signal and leaving the kerb do at least 5seconds. All the other diverge/merge do at least 3 clicks priors to diverge/merge. With turning you just need to signal "sufficiently" say at least 5 seconds or 30m before hand will be ok. Re stopping behind a car yes stop so you can see some road behind the tyres of the car on front. That will work for a test and be easy to remember.
@@thedrivingtestguynsw8424ahh thanks for that, clears up some muddiness for me, thank youu. Also how much distance should I leave behind somebody in normal driving on the road? I know it should increase when increasing speed but should I just leave a lot more space just to be safer and put the examiner at ease?
Hi Jimbo, I know you have recommended mirror checks for lane changes, turns, manouvres, but are they marked and I will lose marks if I don't do them? Is a simple head check for these diverges enough?
Hi Raymond mirror checks are not marked as head movement head checks. However if you don't actually check mirrors as you drive you can't judge if it's safe. So if you don't check your mirrors when you pull out, lane change etc and you hit or nearly hit someone then you are out.
Hi Jimbo, I'm just a little unsure about speed limits and what to do if I'm unsure about what the speed limits in some areas are. Do I assume main roads are 60 and smaller streets are 50? And if I don't know what the speed limit is in a certain zone, can I just go slower and cruise at 45? Would I lose marks for going too slow such as 45 in a 60 zone? Could I go slower on a main road if there are no cars and it's not busy and if it is busier, I could judge the appropriate speed by the cars around me? Just not sure what to do if I missed out on a certain speed limit sign and don't know the speed to go at
Hi Raymond assuming main roads are 60 and residential are 50 can work but not always. Some main are going to be 70 and 80 or more. There are going to be 40 zones spread around. In non residential you need to be within 20km of the limit from the testers point of view. But if you do 45 in a 60 and the road is clear then it's going to causes alot of angst with cars behind. It's really gets down to the fact that you need to develop the skill of noticing speed limits. Another thing you could do is notice the area where the tests go and pre learn the areas speed limits particularly the 40zones. You could also ask the examiner what the speed limit is but I would not depend on that.
@@thedrivingtestguynsw8424 ah right thanks for that info. A follow up question, is there anything wrong with causing some angst with the drivers behind if I am going 45 in a 60 zone in that I will lose marks by doing that because I am not managing speed correctly? Or is it ok because you mentioned that I could go within 20km of the speed limit in non-residential?
If it is a standard (non children's crossing) you do not need to wait to they fully cross. With children's crossings (usually near schools) you need to wait til every one including the supervisor is off before going.
@@thedrivingtestguynsw8424 thats new information for me . I just keep learning new things from your videos . And btw yesterday i had my test and i passed 1st GO with 98% ...i wanted to thank you for your videos it helped me out alot . Keep up the great work mate 👍
Hi Jimbo, my test is in warriewood and theres a road (powderworks road) with multiple yellow advisory speed signs of 35km/h for all the bends in the road. There is a 50km sign at the start and one towards the end of the road. My question is can i go 50km between these advisory signs ? Im having trouble knowing where they end. do they usually correspond to the yellow arrows bending around the road and then you can drive at 50 before you reach the next yellow advisory sign ? thanks !!!!
Hi Alice the 35 is the recommended speed you should do for the bends. When it straightens and you can see better then you can go closer to the 50limit. When you come to the bend again slow back to 35.
@@thedrivingtestguynsw8424 Just a nitpicky question about what is defined as 'straightens' as that is a little subjective. Would you say the instructor is a little less fussy about the ending less bendy bits as long as the obvious bends are done at the indicated speed?
Hey Jimbo, Can I drive in 50 in 80 zone limit during the test or the maximum i can slow down is 20 making 60 in the 80 zone. Can you please clarify how slow can we drive in the test out of speed limit
Hey Jimbo, Im in bit of a pickle here. My license expires in august 30. I had booked my test at blacktown for august 8 and because of the lockdown they had to cancel and refund it. Do you happen to have any knowledge on if i can still give my driving test even though my license expired because of lockdown?
Hi Phurba you should really direct this question to Service NSW. They will be able to give you an exact answer. Try and give them a call tomorrow. You may be on hold for a bit due to covid.
In this case, if I couldn’t find a gap on a 70-80 street, could I slow down to 50-60, so the car on my next lane can go away, then I can change lane? ( as the car actually speeding up when seeing my right signal and I worried I might not be able to finish changing lane - in my last test :(
Hi Aimee yes certainly slowing and encouraging the other car to pass by is an option. I may do that if there is just that car. If there are lots of cars then best leave signal on and wait til someone let's you in.
@@thedrivingtestguynsw8424thanks for answering~ will I fail ? - if I keep waiting for gaps and simply no gaps then i couldn’t complete changing the lanes so to turn right ? I mean I was on 70 speed line and the street can finish in no time? Really anxious about it…
@@Helloacx Hello Aimee if you are unable to get the car positioned on multiple occasions then yes the examiner will have to ask you to come back. When it's busy you are never going to get a gap. You must make one your self by putting you signal on and finding that person who will let you in.
If the speed of street is 60 should I drive at 50 or more ?? If the street has more than hump and crossing and the speed of street is 50 What is the suitable speed in this case ??? Nearly every 20 meters there is crossing and hump
drive at what you think is appropriate. If there are bumps, it is appropriate to slow down. In fact, if you don't slow down, it's a hazard. Don't go more than 10 under the speed limit, 5 under is the safe zone.
Hi Pathz my understanding is that a NSW learner while in a another state has to obey their laws. So in Vic a learner doesn't have the 90km/h restriction so can do the posted limit. So if it's 110 you can do 110. You should check this with the relevant state laws.
Hi Jimbo quick question,I was doing a driving test and as I’m driving down a street a car pulled out from his driveway in front of me to turn right and stopped to give way to me once he saw my car.I stopped to give way to him and let him go first to avoid collision,is that a fail on my part for letting go first? Thanks jimbo
Well it can be a fail if you gave way to him unnecessarily. If he had stopped as you say then I would have kept going. I would have stopped if he didn't stop and an accident was imminent.
In NSW they only look at the dashboard. Sometimes they can't see the speedo so they can't issue the F5 fail. (unless you are obviously over a lower speed limit)

@@thedrivingtestguynsw8424 ok that clears up some muddiness thanks
Hey Jimbo, when you see a workzone ahead sign. Do you drive 40 and under straight away. Or wait until it is near the actual workzone sign then you reduce speed to 40km/h and under?
You need to reduce to under 40 if there is a 40 speed limit sign. If it's just a work sign then just slow to what is safe.
Hi, I have a test coming up and a bit worried that I might go over the speed limit. If there are no speed signs, which speed shall I go?
Thank you
Hello Valerie if you are in residential then do 50km/h. If its non residential then it's probably 60km. Preferably you really need be good at looking out for speed zones. Alternatively you could get an instructor to take you around the areas used for your chosen test centre and memorize them.
@@thedrivingtestguynsw8424 thank you. Your videos are very helpful!
Sometimes when driving towards a normal standard pedestrian crossing, 2 or 3 meters before the actual pedestrian crossing there is a solid stop line. I am a bit confused do i stop behind it when there is people crossing or when there is no one crossing do i still have to completely stop?
Hello Daniel you only need to stop if people are about to cross.
@@raymondqiu8202 You need to keep at least a 3 sec gap. I'll have a new video soon that deals with this.
Great summary!👍👍
Hi Jimbo, I know you have recommended mirror checks for lane changes, turns, manouvres, but are they marked and I will lose marks if I don't do them? Is a simple head check for these diverges enough?
Hi Raymond mirror checks are not marked as head movement head checks. However if you don't actually check mirrors as you drive you can't judge if it's safe. So if you don't check your mirrors when you pull out, lane change etc and you hit or nearly hit someone then you are out.
@@thedrivingtestguynsw8424 ah ok, that clears up the mirror checks for me, thanks
What about narrow streets and the streets have bending with parked cars on the left and right side
What is the speed that is suitable in this case
Probably would do less than 40km/h
Even if the speed of this street is 50 ?
@@التايجر-ذ4ش Thats the speed LIMIT, not the speed you are meant to go
Hi Jimbo, do I need to wait the pedestrian to cross totally to the other side before moving forward? How the assessor score this?
If it is a standard (non children's crossing) you do not need to wait to they fully cross. With children's crossings (usually near schools) you need to wait til every one including the supervisor is off before going.
Jimbo mate is it true that on the test lets say if the speed is 80 kmph .. you can drive up to 20kmph under that posted speed and its OK ??
Yes

@@raymondqiu8202 Hi Raymond when it becomes less curved and you can see better ahead then pick up the speed.
Hey Jimbo! My driving test is tomorrow at Silverwater, are there any workzones I should knwo about?
Hello Marshmallow unfortunately I don't know the Silverwater area so I am unable to help. Best of luck tomorrow 🤞
Hi Jimbo, can we use cruise control while taking a test?
I don't know the exact answer. Generally any feature of a car can be used that doesn't record the test. You best ask them direct.
@@thedrivingtestguynsw8424 Thank you mate!
what if you're trying to keep 3-second gap with the car in front of you but you end up going more than 20km under the speed limit?
Yes your first priority is to keep a min 3 second gap. If that means you have to be more than 20km under the limit then that's what you do.
@@thedrivingtestguynsw8424 Jimbo in this scenario would be able to overtake in the test while following all correction rules?
@@breemsp591 Yes you can overtake if done correctly.
Hey Jimbo, Can I drive in 50 in 80 zone limit during the test or the maximum i can slow down is 20 making 60 in the 80 zone. Can you please clarify how slow can we drive in the test out of speed limit
In non residential try to be within 20km of the limit. Unless there is some hazard. So 50 in an 80 in non residential and no hazard would be too slow.
@The Driving Test Guy NSW so what about 60 in 80 zone limit in the highway. Is it fine to be within 20 of speed limit in highway. Like 100 in 120 zone
Hey Jimbo,
Im in bit of a pickle here.
My license expires in august 30.
I had booked my test at blacktown for august 8 and because of the lockdown they had to cancel and refund it.
Do you happen to have any knowledge on if i can still give my driving test even though my license expired because of lockdown?
More context. Im converting my international license to australian.
Hi Phurba you should really direct this question to Service NSW. They will be able to give you an exact answer. Try and give them a call tomorrow. You may be on hold for a bit due to covid.
in town what is the speed managmenet i should do?? 25? or 40? i didnt undersatnd that thanks a lot
Generally in town is a 50zone. But it could be different.
@@thedrivingtestguynsw8424 alright… wish me luck next test~ thanks Jimbo, cannot wait to see ur next video ~

If the speed of street is 60 should I drive at 50 or more ??
If the street has more than hump and crossing and the speed of street is 50
What is the suitable speed in this case ??? Nearly every 20 meters there is crossing and hump
??
drive at what you think is appropriate. If there are bumps, it is appropriate to slow down. In fact, if you don't slow down, it's a hazard. Don't go more than 10 under the speed limit, 5 under is the safe zone.
I’ve got my test on the 30th of august!! What’s everything I need to know, I don’t want to not be prepare for something😩😩
Hi 1v1 watch my videos :)
can u ask the supervisor about the speed limit in the area that ur driving in
yeah, unlimited times
You certainly can ask.
not related to the driving test, but is a learner who got his licence from NSW able to go at 110 ( posted speed limit on hways ) outside of NSW ?
Hi Pathz my understanding is that a NSW learner while in a another state has to obey their laws. So in Vic a learner doesn't have the 90km/h restriction so can do the posted limit. So if it's 110 you can do 110. You should check this with the relevant state laws.
I got my test on 31st august, wish me luck 😭
Best of luck ItsJp :)
Can you drive 20km/h at the 25km/h hump
Yes
What about if it is less 20 ??
I passed first go!!! Although I’m in QLD
Congratulations Lachlan on passing 1STGO in QLD!!! Great news :) Thanks for watching and always stay safe 😃

the driving test is going on?
Not in greater Sydney at the moment.
I HAD A GOOD SLEEP GOOD BREAKFAST MY HUSBAND STEVE COOKED IT'S HURTS THAT I GOT A F1 BUT IM NOT GIVING UP LINDA
Do the testers carry a GPS or do they look at your dashboard to see your speed?
In NSW they only look at the dashboard. Sometimes they can't see the speedo so they can't issue the F5 fail. (unless you are obviously over a lower speed limit)
