The Problem with Firewood

- In this video I discuss the problems with heating with firewood. While doing so, we use our Kubota L2501 Compact Tractor and Iron Craft 48" Grapple to move firewood.
Part of the problem with firewood is clean-up; here we burn a brush pile left over from the top of a large maple tree.
We use our Husqvarna 572XP Chainsaw to buck the maple top into rounds.
This was a great day spent with family and reminiscing on the problems with heating with firewood.

No down side. Just quirks 🤣. My house is over 200 years old and they would have needed a lot more wood back then than I do now - cooking, heating, etc. With efficient stoves I use about 6 cord. I mostly produce with a chainsaw, maul and tractor. Pretty low budget. My grandfather bought the tractor in 1982! Plus I use it for way more than firewood, and could do firewood without it using my truck.
Those are all good points! I was thinking closer to 400 years ago, when there's wasn't much to speak of here in New England.
I grew up cutting wood on the farm with my dad. For a long time it was one of the few things we could do together and not fight. He is gone now, but I still cut a lot of wood, when the saw is running my mind wanders back to those times with my dad and it almost always brings a tear to my eyes.
Thank you for sharing, Sir. We're blessed to be best pals still but I understand it might not always be the way as he becomes a man in the coming years.
@@Academy_Farm He looks like he is a great kid! Me...not so much when I was younger! I am lucky now, my boys are almost grown up, and for the most part they still don't mind helping out when I ask--although I do see the odd eye roll and hear the odd groan of discontent!

Do you not cover your firewood? If not, does it burn well being out in the snow/rain?
Thanks! No, we don't cover it. We keep about 10 cords on hand and it fully seasons stacked, outdoors. Once it's seasoned, we pick a dry week in the Fall to bring inside the basement/attached wood shed. Burns fine for us!
Ah, got it! It sounds like you burn 6 cords a year. How much can you keep in the basement / wood shed? We also burn about 6 cords a year. I’ve been keeping wood under tarps but need to come up with a better system.
@@DCIsaacs we fit 4 cords in the "shed" and could fit 6 cords in the basement, but usually don't max-put our basement space. The woodshed it an unheated area under our 3-season porch.
What a nice video and you address the reality of burning. Many folks think you just call up and order wood 😂 or have no concept of how to process it. We don’t heat our home but I spent many winter days out near our barn splitting and stacking wood so we can enjoy family fires. Your dog looked as though he was enjoying the time out in the snow!
