  • Mars Mission as another of my favorite childhood themes. These sets were released in 2001 and featured wild pieces and colors, some of which would never be seen again.

17:12 You're right about there being a name for it, it's called Biodium, but I don't think anyone can blame you for not knowing that because Life on Mars lore is esoteric and bizarre.
There's a fan made alt-build they incorporated into the lore that are these giant bugs on the surface that take energy from biodium somehow, which might be why they call it that but it's never *explicitly* stated.
During the serials the astronauts are talking with Riegel and he reveals that there's stereotype about creatures that have hair on their heads not being very smart, so it's canonical that everyone thinks Altair is dumb. With the logic behind it being that "The sun doesn't warm their brain enough".
Riegel is both the king and their head general, and it's revealed that how he keeps his power on the surface is through controlling the biodium reserves, implying that he might be a warlord.
You can create biodium artificially but the formula was "lost" which is interesting in the context of that thing about the biodium reserves.
    It's fascinating.

There definitely needed to be some kind of bad-guy to this theme because you can talk about peacefully obtaining energy rocks all you want, but I don't think the flame thrower or laser cannons are involved in that. Giant bugs would have been perfect because the Insectoid theme was rad.

I feel like Life on Mars is the ultimate culmination of classic space. The set designers were concerned about playability and cool factor and little else. Later space themes tend to be a lot less adventurous in piece and color selection IMO. In Life on Mars we see parts from other previous classic space themes, such as the supports from the early 80s, the insectoid legs, the technic steering racks being used as railings, etc.
Overall, probably the best space theme of all time possibly, though I do wish we had some terrain builds

Weird that Lego doesn't make more modular themes like this given that Lego is a modular toy after all. Sand colours are definitely underrated; they're great for balancing colour schemes from being over saturated or adding subtle hues to otherwise cannonically bland objects. I imagine there is a lot of unrealized potential in the colour schemes department for Lego, and just original themes in general. I can only wonder what kind of sand purple castles and sand red dragons we could've gotten..

@@CraftySven Now I know it is 9 months later, but there are actually quite a few of these 'connective' sets nowadays. This is an old video, but it actually came up very handy. About a month or two ago I took over an old Lego collection from a dear friend's brother. They hadn't done anything with it basically since childhood and having heard I was back into lego again, they gave it to me, instead of taking it to a thrift shop, or throwing it away. I warned them that even old used lego is worth a lot these days, but they didn't care and just wanted me to have it.
When I got it, there were a lot of werid pieces and odd figures that I have never seen anywhere. When I finally sorted all the parts I was left with those werid pieces, that almost didn't look like Lego and I was almost tempted to throw it away. I'm so glad I didn't, as it turns out that person basically had this entire collection, judging from what I've so far been able to identify. There are a couple of pieces missing for sure, but all the large tubes and connective pieces, including the pump .. it is very recognisable.
While I am not a fan of the set in particular, nor did I do anything with Lego at that particular time, I am going to see if I can sort out all the parts for the individual sets, as all the Alien figures (minus a few arms) are all here. I have no idea if I want to hold on to the set for long, but my thinking is that somebody that really likes this, should have it eventually.
This is my second watch of the video, because I tried to figure out how the minifigs were supposed to be built and which sets they belong to. The first watch prevented me throwing it away and made me realize I had something fun in my hands that should be put together again. So thanks for both of them I guess!

They're getting snagged up. I have a Mars Moc planned if I ever have own a house with space to waste. But not with brickbuilt terrain. Just dark orange sand as a base. For now, like most people, all that Mars stuff is in a box in a corner.

Loved your vid! I actually have the blue and red mechs. Was gonna get the brown one together with an Insectoids set. I remember when I was a kid, I saw the image of the Aero Tube Hangar and wasn't so sure what to think of it. A friend had it for a while and he explained to me how it mostly didn't work; only one tube worked but by placing the minifig right by the end and another tube had a "little car." I was so disapointed that decided not to even beg my parents for it. Your review really made me think twice and ponder on it. Maybe my friend screwed up the build or didn't know how to describe things? Anyways, I'll try to get it on BL soon...

What’s cool to me is how these sets straddle modern and vintage Lego. The odd minifig design if evocative of earlier Lego but the box design and printing is more modern while the parts used settle somewhere in between. The use of colors that where basically exclusive to Life on Mars is also a more vintage concept.

It's unfortunate you don't have the boxes for or booklets for them. I definitely recommend checking them out online. They provide a lot of indication on the modularity. I only had the Blue and Red mechs and the hopper. The blue one was by far the most play value as the hip thrusters could be used to replace the arms, and taking on Leg and plugging it at the back made for a really nice looking flight vehicle. The combination of the Red and Blue mechs is also quite impressive as you can make a pretty robust Quad miner, PLUS the flight vehicle. Wished I could get my hands on that Mining vehicle at least as well. Damn such a good series, but also hard to find.

I adored the Life on Mars sets back in the day. I think Lego should bring back a similar concept, one with no firmly-defined bad guys. The other Space sets before did this well, in that any of them could be the antagonists to another set, but also could be the good guys. The UFO sets looked frightening, but were they villains or just scary? This gives children the opportunity to tell their own stories and have as much conflict or as little as they want. Perhaps everything goes well and it’s a story of exploration and diplomacy. Or maybe the humans and Martians enter open warfare.
