    That's a really lovely kit of the beautiful Folland Gnat trainer. And a superbly finished result. I've loved the Gnat since I first saw the Red Arrows debut with the aircraft in 1964. Even the diminutive 1/72 scale model is delightfully sweet.

    After three glorious years at 4FTS Valley in the early 70's, the Gnat has always been a favourite modelling subject for me. I struggled through a couple of the Aeroclub vac forms with reasonable success, but how happy I was when this kit came out. It gave me the opportunity to replicate the three different liveries worn at Valley over the years; yellow, the lovely scheme you show, and that horrid dayglow which attracted irremovable filth and faded to yellowish in no time. Just being phased out when I arrived. As you suggest, it's a lovely kit and you've made a spectacular job of it.

    It's in my stash. I was about 11 when I built the 1/72 Red Arrow vesion in the 1960s from Airfix. Love the Gnat. We had privately owned airworthy one at Jet Heriage where I worked in the 1990s.

    That's a superb build and a great paint job. The last time I did a polished paint job on a model car I put on plenty of clearcoats then sanded with those sponges, working to a 2000 grit. I then used Solvol Autosol polish which I had to hand. It worked really well. Finally give the model a good wash in warm water with soap to get off all the remnants of polish

    Great build , i agree with your theory of gloss varnishes and have had slight orange peel effects occur from time to time , at first i thought it was the base colours at fault but then realised i should have done what you you did before your final gloss coat and by that i mean polish a lot earlier so now do that by using 12000 wet n dry paper ,wet, and buffing sticks it does help a lot and you can see how its progressing as well , weather conditions where i live ( tropical Australia) can affect things too such as humidity but even in cold conditions humidity can give one a challenge with gloss's , thats my two Bob's worth cheers

    • @ModellingWeekly
      @ModellingWeekly  8 місяців тому +1

      Yeah that's some very good input. I do think the key is to begin the sanding back & polishing from a very early stage, as it sets up the future layers with a perfectly smooth surface 👍

    Nice kit, and it comes with a pilot figure, which is increasingly rare. This trend for kits not to include a pilot is really annoying, especially for this era of jet. The claim that "there are plenty of after-market figures available" is simply not true, and in any case they're stupidly expensive for what they are. Just include one in the kit! That gives you an option at least, and modellers who want to go down the route of a non-existent resin figure can still do so. Sorry for the rant, but 4/5 kits I've built recently have no pilot, and as I like to build them wheels-up, it just looks silly.

    • @ModellingWeekly
      @ModellingWeekly  8 місяців тому +1

      Yep, completely get where you're coming from! It's always nice to have the option. I think most manufacturers leave them out down to the fact they cost quite a lot to make, as they need to be sculpted separately first, but I'm not too educated on the topic

  • @blackcat62
    @blackcat62 8 місяців тому +1

    Looks great. Genuine question, not been funny, and wanting to learn, does the pre shading end up visible after all those paint and varnish coats? Thx

    • @ModellingWeekly
      @ModellingWeekly  8 місяців тому

      Thank you! And good question - it does show through yeah, but you need to be careful with the transparency of the paint layer over the top of it as it's very easy to completely cover the preshading. The only part on this aircraft that I preshaded were the grey wing undersides, and you can kind of see the final effect in the studio picture at the end of the video (22:34)

    "The decals are by Cartograf, nothing more to say". Really? How about are they correct for the scheme in question, right size, right colours, right shapes, etc. It's Airfix's job to get this correct, Cartograf just print the results. They are always well printed, but that doesn't mean the decals have no issues with them in terms of a representation of the real model.

    • @ModellingWeekly
      @ModellingWeekly  8 місяців тому

      Yes, really. I'd appreciate if you don't misquote me :) I said "(as for the decals) I have nothing to remark". This implies that they are correct and displaying no obvious issues. I then go on to say "they're cartograf, and with that I have my full confidence in them" - this is referring to their quality, thickness, register, and colours. I know that cartograf don't design them. If there was anything wrong with them, I would have said.

    • @grahamjames244
      @grahamjames244 8 місяців тому +1

      Sorry a misquote - I summarised. This is the actual text. "In terms of the decals, I've not got anything in particular to remark. They're Cartograf and with that I have my full faith in them. All the colours look lovely and sharp, so this is fantastic stuff." Doesn't change my view that a review of the decals has to be more than just the printing of them.@@ModellingWeekly

    • @ModellingWeekly
      @ModellingWeekly  8 місяців тому

      @@grahamjames244 if there was anything wrong with them I would have made a point of it. In my experience, having only built fairly modern kits for the last few years, errors in the design of kit decals is rare, and as a result it's not something that I mention. I'd only mention it if there was something wrong. Alongside this, I'm no expert on Folland gnats - I wouldn't be able to recognise an error just from first glance, unless it was glaringly obvious, in which case everyone would be able to see it because I show the entire sheet on screen with good lighting and 4K resolution. I'm not sure what else you want me to say, but I am sorry you feel this way. My apologies.
