  • Today Christopher Sellars takes you through an in-depth look at ballet technique and barre. This is more of a working class and "workshop" to help you improve your dancing. While the combinations are more for intermediate/advanced dancers, ALL LEVELS would benefit from hearing his advice! I hope this helps you start to develop your own technique further. Demonstrating is the lovely 12 year old Taelor Fjeldsted of Ballet West Academy.

I admire the vulnerability of the student to demonstrate and show real-life "mishaps" or areas needing a bit of correction. It really helps us all learn, to see the process of improvement.

Thank you for pointing this out. Taelor is an incredible student. We went with a younger student because they tend to be less critical of themselves and just hungry to learn. (I had to get her to do things wrong on purpose at times because she is so darn talented... lol) Taelor is brave to be our demonstrator, but also so talented to apply live corrections. I’ve watched her do this in class. So the way she works here is no different than her discipline in class. Taelor is a superstar. We also had her mother (also a dance teacher) in the studio the whole time. Taelor is the way she is because of how her mother supports her. It’s inspiring to be in the middle of!
This is the video I was desperate to put out there because watching applied corrections as a teacher has made me learn so much more about the physics of classical ballet. Thank you so much for watching!

    Wow. This is pure Gold!
I’m still a beginner (I danced in my childhood but sadly not much ballet but jazz and belly dance) and I had to play many exercises in slow motion because I wasn’t able to follow the pace but I learned so much from this workshop. I can’t even count the aha moments - it’s incredible! I will watch this again and again to really internalize all the techniques. Christopher Sellars is a wonderful teacher and Taelor is just adorable and so talented. Thank you so so much for this!
I guess I speak for everyone if I say: more of it.

Hi! I'm breaking this down minute by minute, and it's AMAEBALLS. But I'm stuck on balancing in al la second at around 23:00. I understand your corrections to her. I don't understand what I am aiming for though. You say "there it is," but I just don't understand why the correction is a better thing. I'm an adult beginner so there are things that I'm totally missing.

It’s the terminology I use to express how the shape of the ankle and foot doesn’t come solely from the ankle down. It should start from the pelvis, as in through the lower abs, rotators, and inner thigh extending the entire line of the leg down to the foot. 😊
