My first computer was a Commodore 4. I used to program games using the basic language. It was fun. Also scott adams had some great text adventure games out.
Ninja Action game series: Part 1: "The Shadow." Part 2: "The Shadow?" Part 3:: "The Shadow!" Not sure how many would get that reference but well... here we are.
I had a C64 as a kid too. Our first computer and the beginning of my love for games. I was barely old enough to use it, but I learned quick. PLayed Spy Vs Spy and Maniac Mansion a lot, along with Bionic commando and Caveman Uglympics ;) . I remember it well.
It's so much harder to make the tech focused genres, every time I play I end up going into a RPG, Adventure, Casual kind of loop. I dont think it is all the needed to put new features into your game engine, but if you ever were going to do it the time is early when you dont have access to training.
So a general tip I have for picking a good game/topic combo is "think of another game you played and how it's classed." So obviously a Fantasy/RPG game will work etc. Also I would like to suggest for your Vampire/RPG "Vampire: The Networking Dinner"
Similar first PCs. C64 was first. Still some of my most fun games from memory. Maniac Mansion, Skate or Die, Summer Games. My second was a 386 DX 66. That PC held its own for so long well into the Pentium days.
My own first computer was self assembled, a Pentium something something that I wasted plenty of time on playing Baldur's Gate. First computer that I could "hijack" (my dad's) was a 386 SX 25Hz too though - could barely run X-Com 2 though For a suggestion : Horror adventure, Alone in the Park (wink wink) No need for a copy for me regardless, I have this game already (in fact I bought it cause I enjoyed your first run through so much, all those years back!)
486 DX 66. I don't quite recall the specs of everything else. I just know it cost allot. With what little money I had left I picked up a few games based on box art. X-com was one of them. It set me on the right path!
Can't remember my first pc, but windows xp was my first os. Mythology - Adventure/RPG - "No More Gods"

Amiga 500, followed by a 486 DX2-66 ....40MB HDD, 256K graphics card and 8-bit sound card ...the one with the volume wheel on the back.
If you do it early in the timeline. Zombie strategy, they are dozens
