  • There's not many rules but having your cue on your chest is one of them.
    How much pressure on your chest? Really loose? Really tight? In this video i explain the perf amount #snooker #snookerplayer #snookercoaching

    I have the cue just touching my chest for one reason: I am a muscular guy with big chest and I’ve found that by having the cue on my chest especially when following through, due to the nature of the cue tapering towards the thicker end where you’d grip the cue, the cue goes offline. I’ve tried working on this technique for a long time but wasn’t getting consistency with my potting. As soon as I just have it touching the chest and not pressed against it, my cueing action got much better and consistent. Guess some textbook rules about snooker cue action does very with different individuals based on their physical traits.

      I would need to see this to really understand what you mean.
      I suspect you are pulling your cue off line on the backswing or following through to the wrong part of your chest…or both.
      You could still use this method with your lovely big pecs. 💪🏻

    Michael Holt ,
    can you please make a video that how come that most of top professional are cross dominance eye hand
    although that percentage in the population is just 17% ,
    In American pool you see a lot more of players same side dominance , as its little bit easier to pot balls .
    thanks

    Gotta be that having a nice stable restraint on the chest, and timing the cue tip to hit the exact spot on the white you chose - makes for a nice cue action. Except, the wrist can still twist the cue off line I feel, and micro mm can still cause a miss. I always feel that the moment I let the cue go, I know if I made the shot or not, but never before.

    Devil's advocate here: how was Mosconi able to run a 500 and more in straight pool while standing almost upright? Same goes for the likes of Miserack, Seagel etc. They play so loose but still cue straight.

    • @MichaelHoltSnookerCoaching
      @MichaelHoltSnookerCoaching  29 днів тому +1

      They probably don’t cue straight (like most people), you don’t need to cue straight to pot balls.
      If you’re referring to not having the cue touching the chest, in pool the pockets are much bigger which means you have much much more room for error. Snooker players are on a different level when it comes to accuracy. Without this help of the body/chest increasing the consistency of strike it’s very difficult to be accurate enough to play snooker to even an ok level.
      Although they look similar comparing snooker with pool is like comparing golf with crazy golf.

    I’ve noticed that when my cue is close to my chest and stays there during the follow through, the cue is offline with my eyes. Should I twist my body (which is uncomfortable compared to my current stance) to make both lines (eyes line and cue line) match? Or any other advice? Thanks.

      Mike explains that there are different cue actions and how the cue is deliverd on strike ,but keeping the cue touching the chest is the one thing you have to do for consistency.Even Judd Trump with his crocked cue action has the cue running down his chest ,he’s playing with a fault ,but it’s a consistent fault that’s 100% repeatable .

    What happens if yoire right-handed and you cue from under your left eye? I seem to find that if i want the cue touching the right side of my chest, but the cue under my left eye, I tend to look like Joe Swail with my elbow pointing inside and feel like there is some unwanted rotation/movement with arm/elbow on the forward motion when I strike which i am unsure how to avoid.
    Would you recommend i play around with elbow position (i.e, see how it feels sticking my elbow out like Ray Reardon), or try to alter how i get down on the shot - as in, how my body sits around the cue (my elbow/arm on delivery)? Or something else.
    Cheers, Michael!

      If I may share my humble opinion on the matter you are in a good situation to be in. If you look at some photos of neil robertson and Judd on their shots you'll see they're like you with the opposite hand/eye relationship. They get around this by slightly turning their body so their elbow is still relatively 12 oclock for consistency, and I think the 12 oclock elbow is a feature all the best cueists have and you should too

    I think some players hear this and apply the advice the wrong way.
    They do it by moving the cue to their chest while they are already down on the shot (removing cue from line of aim).
    instead of the correct way: putting the cue on line and THEN moving their chest to the cue.
    Correct me if i am wrong, but that is my opinion.

    Advice needed please ! Do you know or can you suggest a way to preserve/save a cue action ? I have found my perfect alignment, aswell as head body position - suddenly the game becomes very easy , cueball does exactly what is told , high breaks come in easy , and generally the feeling on the shot is very comfortable ! Thing is I play 2-3 times a week 1-2 hour sessions aswell as local tournaments once a month. Obviously its not enough practise time and it takes me 1 hour or 3-4 frames before I calibrate enough and that perfect alignment and feeling clicks… Please suggest a way to develop a routine that would allow me to click in from the first frame. I even have videos of myself from different angles when in the zone but I cant copy that fast enough and it drives me crazy :). Even mates are shocked how my game can change from poor amateur to advanced player mid game till I calibrate and it clicks…

    Hi! I make 30, 40 break regularly but what I’m facing some issues now is keep looking for the potting angle here & there on the object ball and I keep missing simple shots, due to which I’m loosing my confidence in every shot. How to overcome this?Ty

    • @ernoeskeli1139

      Just keep playing, that's how you gain confidence. There are no shortcuts unfortunately

    • @NZHapiman
      @NZHapiman 4 місяці тому

      with a 40 break comfort zone youre ready to move up. From here it will be about what shots are in your repertoire. There will be pots and shots youre comfortable with when down on the shot AND SOME YOU ARE NOT. Those are your focus now. Find one and instead of thinking 'oh its one of those' and hitting and hoping, isolate it and practise it till the ssun goes down. Study it from all sides and find a way of lifting your shot- pot and position- success until you ADD IT TO YOUR REPERTOIRE. So next time it appears you know aaah I have a plan for this shot- no more hit and hope. Then onto the next one. Seek the tough ones out one by one and add it to your bag of tricks. The more new tricks in your bag must auutomatically mean higher breaks so long as you keep them all in your bag. Missing easy shots will likey be more about focus, concentration...than technique...if youre a regular 40 breaker. 50 can also be a mental barrier. It was for me when I started playing. For that do the line up over and over until you hit 50 just to get the feel of fifty so its removed as a mental barrier. Youll also get the value of consistency-takes minimum 14 pots to get 50.

    I'm pretty dumb. When I first saw a video where a coach is like 'touch your chest to your cue' I thought they meant the side of the chest, like running along the side of the ribs. I didn't realise it's just a matter of getting down really low until the front of the chest hits the cue. It definitely helps so much. I used to put right spin on all my straight shots before I started doing it.

    This is really insightful, thank you. My cue seems to run to the side of my chest and to apply more pressure, I am pushing it to the left with my grip hand. Is the cue running more under your chest as appose to the side of it? Should I try and come down on it a bit more instead of to the side of it? I hope that makes sense.

    Love your videos mate. I live by the ‘pot that to get on that’ approach that I heard you say in one of your videos. Cuts a lot of faff out when you’re dealing with so much stuff down on the shot. Could you do about video about where you look and why, as you strike the cue ball please. I never knew where I looked as I hit, then changed to object ball as I strike and improved. I recently started looking at cue ball at strike and have improved again, but it’s not consistent and thats what I want to get, so…..gonna hopefully book a lesson with you soon too. Anyway, loads of waffle, but big up on all the content, it’s great and have fun being back on tour….keep your head screwed on and you should do well mate

    Great video Michael. I actually did a similar one, must've been about the same time as this on how to hold the cue properly. Within this I incorporated touch points at chin and chest to help deliver the cue straight. My channel is more for pool players but the mechanics are the same.
    However, I've noticed recently my back arm is moving outward on my last backswing. Kind of like Judd where he looks like he's going to cue across the ball. Any advice on this or any idea why it might suddenly be happening?

    • @MichaelHoltSnookerCoaching
      @MichaelHoltSnookerCoaching  6 місяців тому +1

      Thank you, appreciate it.
      You can’t cue across the ball, the tip hits the cue ball at a point and the cue ball leaves the tip after about 1/10th of a second. If you hit the correct point of the cue ball the cue only has to be pointing in the right direction at impact. It’s irrelevant where the cue is pointing at any other point of the strike.
      You can cue across the line which Judd does but he will make contact with the cue ball at that exact point the cue is pointing in the right direction (potting line). This is why Judd’s timing of his movement is very important to him, he has to make sure he makes contact with the cue ball at that exact moment.
      His arm doesn’t create this movement, he moves his body when he strikes the cue ball so you saying it’s your arm that moves might not be the same thing.
      If I were you I wouldn’t stress too much about it, it’s very unlikely it’s the reason you miss. It would have to be a really shocking movement, especially at pool where the tolerances are so big.
      I haven’t seen you play so can’t be sure but would be really surprised if it wasn’t something else. Sorry I can’t help more. 👍

      @MichaelHoltSnookerCoaching Hi Michael, I really appreciate you taking the time and your detailed response.
      Judd is a great example where he looks all out of line, but as you say, at the point of impact, everything is as it should be.
      I'm not sure why my arm is doing this and I've not been aware of it for very long. The important thing for me is it hasn't seemed to have a negative impact on my game. Of course I miss, but I don't seem to be missing more than normal. So I've not stressed myself yet or tried to change anything. The failing eyesight that comes with old age is more of a concern. Moving from snooker to pool helps with that though 🤣. I can't even see the arm movement when I watch the videos on my channel, so it may be very slight.
      Anyway, really appreciate your input. Keep up the great work on your channel, it's amazing (even the Peppa Pig examples) and good luck for the rest of the season. Hope to see you back at the Crucible next month 👍

      I am 6’3, and I have been having the same problem (to the point that now I will have to stay a while without playing).
      My story is: always played without cue touching neither chest nor chin, and about 2 years ago started trying to make the chin touch the cue. It is somewhat uncomfortable (and looks a bit weird because of my height), but I managed to make my new stance. But to make the cue touch my chest, I can’t do that unless I lift the bottom of the cue, and we all know that’s not the way to go. So I guess I’m still trying to find the perfect stance for me. Man I wish tables were just a bit higher.
      I am doing physical therapy for my bridge arm shoulder. Hope mine (and yours) get better so we can keep playing this lovely game.

      absolutely agree , for me the backward and forward movement firmly across the right nipple in my case is actual validation that the cue is 'coming through' and 'going back' on a straight line. Its my go to to help tighten up my cue action. As if its going forward over one side of the same point on the chest and back on the other, cueing cant be straight.

  • @grahamdingwall9821
    @grahamdingwall9821 7 місяців тому

    Snooker players mislead for years by too much emphasis on cue action. How many times have you heard he cued across it or took his eye of it? Lets dispel 2nd myth - how did mark williams pot long pink in world final with his eyes closed? first myth is cueing across it can only happen when you don't aim. Your cue action is linked to your aiming and walk in. If is was all about cueing then the game would be purely mechanical but its not. The chest only keep cue on line . Like everything in this world - we have been indoctrinated by mainstream everything, medical, science, education (Indoctrination),. Most are blatant lies so now is the time for zero bull shite and get to the truth in everything not just how to play snooker. . Michael goes outside mainstream just like Bruce lee which upset the other masters.

    • @dhirajpallin2572
      @dhirajpallin2572 6 місяців тому

      Cueing across the ball is when your cue is not pointing in the same direction as your head orientation. It could happen with eyes open or closed, if the person is not aware that their cue is not pointing directly forward. You talk about snooker and the world in black and white terms, but things are rarely black and white. There's some truth in most established things people say, and when they're wrong it's usually in subtle ways. When people disregard the knowledge of those with 10000s of hours practice, it's usually just a delusion of grandeur. A complete under-estimation or miscalculation as to the extent of another's knowledge.
