Widowmaker Maker it has something to do with the way our brains are programmed while we are growing up. Japanese children are not used to listen to the R and nobody teach them any kind of exercise to correctly pronounce it. In Mexico, and other spanish countries, children are taught how to say a really strong and grave R, but we struggle with “Th”. And... I lost my train thought... I forgot what my point was going to be.
It's not really because they use a syllabary, but what we transliterate from Japanese into English as 'r' (as in 'ra,' 're,' etc.) doesn't match up with the English 'r' much at all-if anything, it's like an unrolled rolled 'r' from Spanish, if that makes sense. The way you make Japanese words with 'r' has your tongue in a position somewhere between an English 'r' (where it usually stays lower in your mouth) and an English 'l' (where it hits the roof of your mouth), hitting behind your upper teeth in a position actually pretty close to that of a 'd.' The sound it makes is then sort of like 45% 'r,' 45% 'l,' and 10% 'd.' Thus, their frame of reference for how to pronounce the 'l' and 'r' sounds ends up being pretty much the same, and it's kind of hard to conceptualize, much less reproduce putting your tongue in a different place to make a certain different sounds, especially when you're used to those sounds being rendered the same when transliterated into your own language. Sorry for the overly long explanation, especially when it's probably a little confusing haha, I just find this stuff interesting!
