I love the way you guys format your reactions. Get in, kill it, get out. Period. No nonsense, no politics, no wasted chatter. Perfect! Thanks for that.
We'up outta here. Takes 1.5 seconds to say. All business. ☑
I totally agree with you. These guys make the song the star instead of acting stupid & making their channel about themselves.
Totally agree,a breath of fresh air into what's becoming a cesspool so far as reaction channels are concerned.
I'm agreeing also. It must be tempting to preamble with "So this next one, y'all been sayin that it's as hard as we're gonna hear from this band, so that'll be interesting!" and then take a detour for three minutes. But they DO give good analysis in the middle of the song, but not too much, 1, 2, or 3 times (a 5-second rewind would be nice so's not to miss cool transitions, but whatev, heh) and at the end. I AM waiting for the time that Che answers "Uh, no." to La's "You ready?" LOL!
Get in, killit, get out? Yeah, but.... I've, personally, heard these songs many times, so.. I wanna know what these fellas think. I wanna know if and how classic rock works or doesn't work for them. I want a bit more elaboration from these dudes, is what I'm saying.
"Renegade", "Blue Collar Man", "Lady", "Crystal Ball", "Suite Madame Blue", "The Best of Times"
This is one of Styx' most proggy tunes, kind of Yes influences showing. Another midwest Chicago area band.
The extended instrumental and synth work put it into prog territory, that's when they were at their best.
I highly recommend
>CASTLE WALLS
>SUITE MADAME BLUE
>MAN IN THE WILDERNESS
>LIGHT UP
>CRYSTAL BALL
>GRAND ILLUSION
All from their best 3 albums, Equinox, Crystal Ball and Grand Illusion from the mid 70s.
Styx from the south Chicago suburbs. They played at one of my high school sock-hops in 1974. Their first hit was “Lady” and it was climbing up the charts.
Check out their songs Renegade ,Castle Wall, Snowblind and Crystal Ball You will not be disappointed.
Nobody bigger back in the day.
Saw them every year in highschool. Mid-70s. Best shows ever.
Lol, they didn’t even make the top 30 in the biggest rock band of the 70’s,….they’re alright, but way too many that are bigger and better than them.
Led Zeppelin. Enough said ?
"Fooling Yourself" is on the same album and is probably the best example of how a "prog rock" song can be made for radio audiences without compromising musicianship.
I wouldn't call that song prog rock at all. Nice song never the less
You want Styx prog? Try the tracks Prelude/Suite Madam Blue and Castle Walls.
Suite Madame Blue is another iconic Styx song...
This song shows what tore Styx apart; the lead singer wanted more elaborate, "Broadway-style songs," while the rest of the group just wanted to continue to rock out.
Ohhh u guys!!! Thos epic cut enjoy!!!!!
20 years later, he, in fact, DID sing in a Broadway play! 😁
The Grand Illusion - a top 5 GOAT album !!!
Dennis Deyoung keys and vocals, Tommy Shaw guitar and vocals, James (JY) Young guitar and vocals and brothers John Panozzo Drums and Chuck bass
"Broadway play" sound is spot on. His delivery sometimes feels theatrical.
Electric piano can do that. But it's done very very well. Still like my Sabbath and Rush but Styx always welcome to jump in with a few songs.
More from the same album -
Fooling Yourself (Angry Young Man)
Miss America
Man in the Wilderness
All bangers.
Styx grand illusion album is a masterpiece
During the "Satanic Panic" of the 1980's, politicians (and their dumb wives) thought this song was Satanic.
This was a huge mainstream hit back in the day....iconic track.
I would be remiss if I didn’t also suggest “Lady” one of the most unconventional and beautiful power ballads ever! Just one of many Styx songs worthy of your reaction!
✌️😊
Epic, iconic. Great reaction - "I thought that they were angels, much to my surprise. We climbed aboard their starship and headed for the skies." One of my favorite twists in a song lyric.
Same. It chokes me up for some reason.
Ate up the alien visitor theme as a young teen in the late Seventies!
Tommy Shaw a Mobile Alabama native plays guitar and sings on a lot of their tracks they basically had two lead vocalist when Tommy came on board this song was Dennis deYoung on vocals
Love me some STYX! Great group out of Chicago. I believe you’d love most of their material but I’d like to suggest “Renegade” next it too will knock your caps back. Progressive, conceptual Rock music at its best; believe it or not they do have a couple of great ballads too!
I can't hear this without thinking of Cartman singing this as fast as he can.
Sounds like The Who. This was a big hit. So many great rock singers back then. And I don't care what anybody says, I loved Mr. Roboto.
Mr Roboto is a jam
@@samuraijacques952 I think it's a love it or hate it kind of song.
Oh, I almost forgot to mention that it was at a Styx show in Spokane, Washington in 1976 that I discovered Rush! I will always be grateful to Styx for introducing me to Rush.😊
It's impossible to not appreciate this song.
They found their fortune🤑🤑
This is usually their encore song
Probably the 20th best song that Styx released. Great catalog of music from them!❤
Styx will take you on a musical journey.
Chicago based prog band. Back in their day, genres weren’t really a thing, Styx was just ROCK N ROLL!
Even with a new vocalist this classic still rocks to this day. STYX performed this last year at their show with REO Speedwagon. Both groups were outstanding.
What helps make their music progressive were the interludes.
Cartman from South Park sang this. It’s funny and worth a listen
Styx and Kansas are the American version of prog... they got the bells and whistles, but they also have a commercial side. They ruled radio in the late 70s.
It is hard to think of one band without the other.
And they're both touring this year on their 50th anniversary tour..I just saw Styx..Kansas in September..
KANSAS was ALOT MORE PROGRESSIVE than Styx in the 70s. Not even close. I would call about 6 of Styx' songs truly progressive rock. Kansas put out 6 solid ALBUMS of Progressive Rock in the 70s alone. The best American Progressive Rock Band.
I just saw their 50th Anniv Tour just a week ago.
>Song for America
>Miracles Out of Nowhere
>Icarus (Borne on Wings of Steel)
>Icarus II
>The Wall
>THE PINNACLE!!!
>Glimpse of Home
>Lonely Wind
>Belexes
>Hold On
>Carry on My Wayward Son
and that is only a small portion of their Progressive tunes.
Styx was "proggy" sometimes. Prog Lite maybe.
They never composed epics like
>Journey from Mariabronn
>Apercu
>Lamplight Symphony
>Incomudru Hymn to the Atman
>Mysteries and Mayhem
>Cheyenne Anthem
>Magnum Opus
>Portrait (He Knew)
>Closet Chronicles
>Sparks of the Tempest
>Paradox
>The Spider
>Lightnings Hand
>Nobody's Home
>Hopelessly Human
plus the others above
Renagade and Blue collar man are Styx classics that you would really like.
I have a soft spot in my heart for Styx. They're a great band. Tommy and J.Y. are a great two guitar team and they are all good songwriters. This is a great record to just listen to all the way through. Every rock and roll fan should do that at least once. It's a 40 minutes you will not regret spending.
Tioraidh an-drasta 🏴
Styx hail from Chicago and consisted of James Young (guitar and vocals), Dennis DeYoung (Keyboards and vocals), John Panozzo (Drums), Chuck Panozzo (Bass) and John Curulewski (Guitar). Curulewski quit in 1976 after six akbums (Styx I - 1972, Styx II - 1973, The Serpent Is Rising - 1973, Man Of Miracles - 1974, Equinox - 1975 and Crystal Ball - 1976) to spend more time with his family. He got replaced by Tommy Shaw (Guitar and vocals). Singing duties were covered by either Dennis DeYoung (here), James Young and Tommy Shaw. Their "best" period was from 1975 until 1979, covering Equinox, Crystal Ball, The Grand Illusion (1977), Pieces Of Eight (1978) and Cornerstone (1979). Later they started to go more chart-inclined with Dennis DeYoung gathering more influence in the song-writing. DeYoung was more broadway-minded (good observation there) while James Young and Tommy Shaw were more rock-friendly.
…..Wow, I just saw Styx last night at the Hampton Beach Casino in New Hampshire, they still sound as good as when I seen them back in the 70’s & 80’s ! Tommy Shaw & J.Y. (James Young) they played this song to perfection 🚀🔥❤️🎸
Last night?!?! Perfect timing!!
It’s not Styx, Dennis, the cofounder, is no longer there. They have 1 original member. JY is the only original. 🙄I call that a cover or tribute band.
@@SueKay-rq1lr You really going to diss Tommy Shaw like that? He was there for their biggest albums.
@@SueKay-rq1lr what ever !
@@timmarshall2491 Yes I am!
Another classic from a great band
"Crystal Ball" uses a similar approach with a soft start that explodes into a highly energetic song. It's one of the best by Styx, along with "Snowblind" and "Half-penny two penny",
Renegade by Styx is another great one. The Steelers always play it here in Pittsburgh to pump up the crowd and the defense near the end of the third quarter.
A 46 year old song that is not old ,it never ages ..
Lots of good stuff to come from Styx...! "Sweet Madam Blue", "Lorelei", "Crystal Ball",
"Why Me", "I'm Ok" and many more...
They should go back to 1975 ... Album - Equinox ... Song - SUITE MADAME BLUE ... the song still resonates with many and probably will for many more decades. I agree, though, that Crystal Ball is one of their best and most popular. There are so many great songs, and their earlier songs are often underplayed and underappreciated.
The entire "Grand Illusion" album is one hit after another. You can listen to it end to end, and you won't find a bad track on it. Lead singer Dennis DeYoung did fancy himself a "Broadway" singer. He tried to take the band in that direction ("Mr. Roboto"), and that is probably one of the reasons the band parted ways with him.
I just saw them last weekend. It was amazing. Theatre rock is how I explain them. My 14 yr old great nephew was blown away. He screamed as much as I did. Was a great night.
They’re out of Chicago. Living in Illinois, I saw these guy at least 10 times. They played everywhere with everyone back in the 70’s.
Remember the band "M&R Rush"?
I graduated HS in ‘79. These reaction channels (and especially yours) reveals how spoiled we were with music. Exhibit A this song. Which comes out of nowhere with its (as you say) musical theater opening and then rocking second half. I will be honest, I don’t think we appreciated the wide range of outstanding music the was regularly produced.
I was in the Class of '78. We had the best music. All of these songs are still played on the radio today. Name something new that will be played 40/50 years from now. I cant think of a single thing.
I appreciated it and went to so many concerts. I stopped seeing Styx when they came out with Mr. Roboto - I had some standards...lol
1980 Grad here. Yea we had great music and did not appreciate as much as we should have. Glad we are alive and still kicking.
You are exactly right we did not appreciate it back then but we do now.
Class of '83 here, and, yeah, I think we KNEW we had it good, but now we can see just HOW good! I mean, the period from '65- '75, and especially '67 - '73?? Are you KIDDING me?? DC101 and countless Classic Rock albums were the soundtrack of my youth--and pretty much today as well!
My favorite Styx song is 'Lady'. Loved it the first time I heard it. By the way, love the way you guys describe your reactions. You get to the feel of the song.
This is my favorite arena rock band. I have seen them live many times! This band has 30 plus outstanding hits! You are about to hear one of the best rock vocalists, Dennis DeYoung!!!’ By the way the Grand Illusion album is a MUST HAVE ALBUM!!!’
Great call on the broadway comment! Dennis has done broadway
"GRAND ILLUSION" LYRICS ARE AMAZING!!!
Suite madam blue , Lorelei, miss America, lady, crystal ball… thx guys
Suite Madam Blue , Crystal Ball , Snowblind and a ton more . keep hitting them
A top ten hit from 'The Grand Illusion' (estimated at over 6 million copies sold), the first of four consecutive multi-platinum albums. It contains the classic rock radio staples "Fooling Yourself" and the title track as well as fan favorites "Man in the Wilderness", "Miss America", and the compact epic "Castle Walls".
You have to let STYX grow on you.......I love'um.
Every single cut on this album is epic. My God the flow to each cut was just meant to be.!!!!! cheers
The keyboard part towards the end always reminded me of Close Encounters of the Third Kind when they’re communicating with the mothership.🖖🏼
Every time these guys were in Houston, TX. I stood in line to get tickets, by skipping school every time. They are my all time favorite band.
I even go see them now that we are all older... (no, I'm not saying, just older.) Thanks for giving them a listen! 🤘🤘🤘
Snowblind, crystal ball, man in the wilderness all must
I saw them for the 2nd time last year and the sound the same and what a visual show they put on. They were touring with Loverboy and REO Speedwagon. What a show they all put on. After them, I saw Tears for Fears for the second time, and Santana was touring with Earth, wind and fire. I’ve seen Santana about four times now and it was the 2nd time Earth Wind & Fire. To say that I go to a lot of concerts in understatement. I have been going since I was 16. I’ll be 62 next March. I am slowly approaching close to 300 concerts over the last 40+ years. I will keep going to concerts until I can’t no more.🥰
Got to get back to the Land, set my soul Free. By the time We got to Woodstock , we Half a Million Strong 🎵🌄✌️
Styx Pieces of Eight Album was the first album I bought as a kid with my own money! Do Renegade next!
Dennis DeYoung keys,lead vocals.
Tommy Shaw guitar , lead vocals.
James Young guitar lead vocals.
Chuck Panozzo bass.
John Panozzo drums.
Everybody sang backup
The first three guys were the songwriters and for the most part who wrote it sang it. James wrote less as time went on so it was Dennis and Tommy as the leaders. This was the classic lineup till 96 when John died😢
Hands down, best album they made.
Always brings back 7th grade woodshop for me. It must have been the first time I heard it. Always been a Styx fan!
So glad you listened the the extended album version. That is the only way to experience this song.
I don't believe that there IS a "truncated" version of this song. 🤷🤷 -IF there is: I have NEVER (thankfully!) heard it and it is worth less than fly dung!🤘🤘
@@SonicProfessor_a.k.a._T._Andra the radio version cut out the synth section.
@@dipsydoodle7988 😵😶 - Wow! I never knew! (and I am VERY GLAD I didn't/never HAD to!!). I guess I never listened to "popular enough" stations. ...always hardcore rock or college stations!
Thanks for letting me know!
"Somthin' bigs comin'" You called it! LOL Loved it! The whole song reads like a Broadway play.
Thanks for the Styx music! I did see this band in 1975 before Shaw joined the band
For me The Grand Illusion & Pieces Of Eight were their best albums imho.
I was 16 when this album came out. My first concert ever. Eddie Money and Robin Trower played with them. At Winterland in San Francisco, no less. Fans could go right up to the stage in those days. Stage was chest high. I was right in front of Tommy Shaw the whole show. No security up front. There's a video of that show on UA-cam. The ticket takers/security would check for weed and as long as you shared, it went in with you. First concert memory, best concert memory.
“Suite Madam Blue” should be your next Styx reaction 👍🏻
Just saw them last Wednesday at the Ohio State Fair. Still kicking ass. Of course they played this❤
Styx was my first concert in 1980! These guys always got dissed by "real" rockers for exactly the comments you made about them being theatrical. They definitely were and I get that it's different, but these guys rock.
I got to see Tommy Shaw open up for Rush on one of their '80s tours.
My first too. That just does not sound right!
@Patrick I saw Styx on Super Bowl Sunday in 1980 in Vancouver. The Babies were the opening act. Great show!
My favorite band of all time
One of my favorite bands and songs! Thanx for the video 🙏
If you haven't done renegade by Styx, it's a must.
You Bros would love their LIVE Concert " Return To Paradise " !!!
Man A&M Records had one hell of a production staff
My favorite TV was the brief Freaks and Geeks. In it the lead freshamn geek is at a school dance abd asks the cheerleader he's got a crush on to dance. He can't dance and this soundslike a slow ballad. They slowly cross across the floor through to crowd to an empty space....and the guitars kick in. This partially sums up the whole show.
These guys put me in the theatre, music theory class….a bunch of places….anyone else? ❤️🎶❤️😎
STYX out of Chicago were blue collar band, played many smaller venues that bigger bands wouldn't touch. I saw them in concert six times in like three or four years and I lived in the boonies. You're right--if not prog, then close enough for me.
There's a blast from the past. I remember hearing this 40+ years ago on the radio. Solid song and group when Dennis DeYoung fronted with the vocals. When he left Styx kinda went south. There's a good and lengthy interview with him where he talks about band, he also has some stories where he interacted with Zeppelin. Also talks about today's music in general and why things are so different now. It's on y t..
I love that you can tell something big is coming.
Man, great guitarists, tremendous vocals and an iconic piano riff. Check out Renegade, Queen of Spades, Miss America. Can't go wrong.
To me Styx’ masterpiece song is “Crystal Ball”. You guys will love it
I love the lyrics in this song. They are so real it reminds me of Jackson Browne's "The Pretender".
Just saw Styx a week ago in Columbus Oh! They’ve still got it. And Foghat opened for them! Styx blended Rock, Pop, Prog. This is what they closed the show with before they encore!
Early Styx is the best Equinox album is interesting
Big sound….saw them back in 77..the Grand Illusion Tour,,,Tommie Shaw killed the vocals, they were LOUD but crisp…worth the drive to LA..never thought of them as prog, but as usual, you guys are spot on! Thanks for another excellent reaction!
They definitely had prog. Moments early in their careers though then changed to most rock or pop/ rock ballads!
Certainly one of the most "theatrical" bands of all time. Grand Illusion should be next, IMO.
You guys are so intuitive musically. You just…get it.
When I was playing a piano bar, this was one of the songs guaranteed to get the ENTIRE room singing together...😅❤
This group was my first concert, Toronto’s Maple Leaf Gardens.
James Young lead vocal on the song “Miss America”
And thanks for not doing the edit versions of this song and slow ride great reactions
I went with my best friend to a Styx concert had front row seats amazing
Early Styx was Prog for sure. As they got on, their sound did become a bit more radio friendly but they always kept some of the Prog elements. Another great band from the 70’s/80’s. You are killin today! 🔥✌️
Funny you should say that it sounds like a song from a Broadway show as the singer, Dennis DeYoung went on to have a very successful career on Broadway.
STYX has a bunch of hits
The only band with 4 consecutive triple platinum albums.
Tommy Shaw, the guitarist, was also in Damn Yankees with Ted Nugent and Jack Blades of Night Ranger.
My home city of Chicago. :-).
