Any songs that combine the two are always a winner. I've always loved music and have always tried to keep a balance between the classic music I fell in love with and today's MUCH DIFFERENT sounds. I'm 44 years old and a musician of 32 years that has toured and played many a stage and no modern artist has hit me as hard as Aurora!! She's simply amazing!!!
Isn’t it nice?… I’m 56 & spent two decades plus writhing & singing for punk rock bands. I knew I’d grown jaded, & was sure I would never feel this effected by a recording artist again.
I was wrong, & I feel like my inspiration has come out of hibernation. Music is medicine. Peace

Aurora is a true empath. In Murder Song (mentioned already) she convincingly sings from the vantage point of dead person. You are in for a very wonderful roller coaster ride. I am in my 70's and Aurora has been my favorite artist since I first heard her in 2015. Thanks for your excellent and thoughtful review.

You will notice when Aurora sings a song she disappears into it. You can sometimes literally see her pull herself back into our world at the end. You will also discover she has exaggerated movements that she admits she's not aware of while singing. Some find it distracting, personally I love it! A wonderful person with a keen wit and reminds me of the old "Flower children" which by the way I remember. Just discovered you and subscribed. I'm 77yrs old and Aurora has become my favorite' i

I know there are many suggestions already, I say go to her Live in Nidarosdomen concert. Old "HUGE" Gothic Cathedral, All Male Choir, a Full Orchestra......the magic awaits......

don't remember everything.....but not a single word was said. It happened quiet. Some people think she has an innocent quality. I think she is super aware of her situation. Not innocence... just violated and she won't forget.

Great reaction. I'm an old geezer 65 and discovered Aurora a couple of years ago. I hope you enjoy her vast catalogue of original songs, covers, concerts, interviews and other fun stuff she has on UA-cam. She has a great love for her fans worldwide...they are known as "warriors and weirdos". She released her new album "The Gods we can touch" a few weeks ago. She's a true Artiste in every respect...singer, songwriter, producer, choreographer, dancer and a good "down to earth" soul. Enough of my rambling...thanks and enjoy more.

The guitarist is Silja Sol (Silja Sol Dyngeland ) she also makes her own music in Norwegian.
Great reaction 😊👍 as Sapphos mentioned, Aurora is from Norway. She's a 25 year old singer song writer and producer. She started writing melodies at the age of 6 and added lyrics from the age of 9. She did this in secret from every one, including her family. She was'nt discovered until her mid teens, after recording a song for her parents.
The woman singing with her is Silja Sol, and she was in Auroras live band for a long time. She's an artist her self and is no longer in the live band as she wanted to focus on her own music.
By the way, Aurora was cast as "the voice" in Disneys Frozen 2. She was the voice calling out to Elsa both in the movie and in the song Into the unknown.

Speaking of Silja; that is one talented woman and the way she was alway able to make perfect harmonies with Aurora…just perfection.
Oh and also a little backstory on Aurora shes from Norway and started writing music when she was six years old so she has a very large catalogue to react to.

Her live performances are where it’s at-not that the music videos aren’t good too but the live performances are where the real magic happens. A very honest, thoughtful and erudite reaction. I am of a similar vintage to you and in my many years of being enthralled by many musicians (also being jealous, as I have no talent at all), none have made a greater impact than this super talented, petite powerhouse (that includes having seen some greats live, including Elton John in 1973, Bruce Springsteen and U2 in recent years). Aurora's work is very diverse. There are songs like this which take the listener to dark depths of emotional pain but there are also some that make you want to dance for sheer joy. Most of her songs however, have the common element of offering hope for a better future. If you continue to work through Aurora's songs your are, without exaggeration, on the ride of a lifetime. Also take a look at some of her interviews and Tik Tok posts (there are many on Aurora's UA-cam channel and those of her many fans) to see her unique, multi faceted personality. Aurora in both performance and persona is a blast.

Songs will have numerous meanings to many different people. I really couldn't help feeling a connection between her lyrics and childhood. You really don't know when you lose your child self, but more often than not, it happened quiet.
Near the end, it also felt like a re-founding of that child, reconnecting to lost dreams and silencing the voice that usually tries to speak over that inner child.
Such a beautiful song, and beautiful performance on both parties. Aurora will always hold a special place in my heart.

I may be mistaken, but I think Silja's mother had just passed away a day or two before this performance, and she still nailed it. Sadly she left Aurora's band over the summer to focus on her solo career.
I recommend both Runaway and Murder 5,4,3,2,1 live at the 2015 Nobel Piece Prize Concert.

Being an old guy like me, you might appreciate her Beatles, Bowie and Leonard Cohen covers.
Honestly you can't go wrong with anything she sings. Between albums, unreleased songs, covers and live performances my iTunes has nearly 200 Aurora tracks, and they're all great. She sings all of her songs a little different in every live performance, so they're all unique experiences.
@@mattgwinn 200 tracks can't be. She has about 95 out including unreleased songs that she sang herself. She has written a few for other artists. Or do you mean different versions of the same songs?

This is what I have of hers: 21 unreleased songs, 7 Soundtrack songs, 6 Singles, 4 remixes, 1 Demo, 12 acoustic performances, 18 live performances, 22 instrumental versions, 16 covers, the Live in Nidarosdomen full concert, 20 8D Audio versions, 2 Norweigan Christmas songs, and the 58 songs off her albums and EPs. I can send you a list if you want. Everything is/was on UA-cam (some I think have been removed).
@@mattgwinn Except for I think 2 songs of Aurora that I don't have because I don't like them, I have all of them. Just not twice. I only have each song once and everyone in the version I like the most. Plus, of course, all albums. I didn't include soundtracks and collaborations, because I don't like all of them. Nevertheless, I know all her works. The high number therefore irritated me. So you also have multiple versions of the same songs. Of course, this also explains the 200.
The quivering/twitching is just Aurora, she has always had it she even makes fun of the critics that focus on it in her Cure for Me video. Aurora is just something special. Her live performances are A must watch, you won't be disappointed in any of them.

It’s actually not related to Murder song. It happened quiet is about a violent relationship, while Murder song is about mercy killing, it’s two very different meanings.😊

So the conserts from Nidarosdomen, the Nobel Peace Price, the HAIK from the woods or others are free to use.
What you else will se and hear from NRK is that the live sound and video productions are over the roof in quality.

Usually I watch reaction videos so I can relive or regain some form of the initial, personal, feelings I get from music. 100% I LOVE how you reacted to this. And the most subtle thing ends up conveying heaps of information.
I think she'd be an excellent film actor....because that's kind of THE skill for something like that.
Also...I'm just thinking....wait till you get to the part in this where she sings "love is wild...." and basically goes into a full on trance, eyes rolling back in her head, as her entire body just melts downward. She's so emotionally in touch with herself and the world, it's honestly kinda astonishing to see. Most people just aren't like this. Myself included. I wish I was....but yeah, I'm mostly just stressed and in my head. :P Modern life can be a lot sometimes....
I really enjoyed your insightful reaction! AURORA is such an awesome talent! And such an interesting person! She is a big fan of Tolkien and the LOTR films -- she recently said that she would very much like to perform a song or two for the upcoming Tolkien-based TV series (The Rings Of Power), so your reference to LOTR may have even more relevance than you realize! She was also the voice of the North Wind in Frozen II (a collab with Idina Menzel).

AURORA (Aurora Aksnes) was born on June 15, 1996 in Stavanger, Norway. She is a singer, songwriter and producer.
AURORA's songs always have a strong message. Often the messages are not very clear either. They can be interpreted so that many people can relate them to themselves. Her movements while singing are extraordinary. She is often so into the song that she shakes her body or head uncontrollably (--> Murder song, It happened quiet) and need 2-3 seconds to come back.
She is capable of transporting feelings because she allows a look into her soul. Her fans call themselves warriors and weirdos.

Hello, I am a German Aurora fan and just discovered this video. if this is your very first time experiencing Aurora, you should definitely do more of her ! I can highly recommend to watch her concert at Nidarosdomen, which is, in my opinion - by far - her best and most beautiful concert. I wouls suggest to react to "Lucky" from that concert, a song that she wrote at the age of 9 years, and the lyrics are so deep and meaningful... I swear, you'll be mesmerized ! The whole concert is simply magical from beginning to end... 58 minutes of pure magic and beauty... not just the music, also the venue, the setting, thje arrangement of the songs, the light, the sound... simply everything is out of this world !

LOL, thanks so much. I try (although I admit, it's not always easy) to disregard nasty comments. I actually got cussed out by one person because I called the artist "talented". They took that as a criticism by saying I felt that the artist didn't "work" for it. Not sure why all the negative passion at times, but that's fine. I try my best to respect everyone's opinion.

The most amazing voice. Her live versions of "The brothel" and "Undercover" are beautiful. And "Turkish delight" More upbeat songs are "White foxes" and "Delerious"

That's brilliant, sir. Congrats on a wonderful reaction video. A lot of words can be spoken about Aurora. For now a will only say that like you I'm well over 60. Have listened to tons of singers, many of them with voices very well trained and more "impressive" than Aurora's. But to date, no voice and performances have hit me more directly and deeply than hers. She is just one of a kind, I you have really something to enjoy and explore. Last comment lol.....but you really ought to react to some of her interviews.
They are hugely entertaining....and give a lot more insight into her as a person. She's ridiculously wise, not just for her age, but for any age. And she's also incredibly funny...very dry sarcastic witty sense of humor. I'd suggest starting with the 2 interviews she did on Triple-J. Those are probably the best to start off with.
There's also an interview called "Lifekeys" where she has an hour long conversation that gets very deep and very interesting. It's one of the few moments where you really get a sense of who she is around her friends and family, and again....the wisdom and intelligence in that interview in particular is pretty mind blowing. I was an idiot at her age, 26, by comparison. I'm doing pretty good now at 39, but man....she's advanced, that's for sure.

edit : AURORA said she started writing this song the first day after the release of her debut album. It possibly talks about rape and revenge, but this depends on the person who listens to the song, as AURORA stated that the songs of this album can have different meanings to everyone depending on how deep you dive into them.
In a Q&A on Twitter, AURORA explained that this song is a part of a big story about a complicated relationship, probably having a connection with "Murder Song (5, 4, 3, 2, 1)", where a guy kills her using the gun and the pillow of this same song as a silencer. It is speculated this same guy is the one she was begging on her knees in "I Went Too Far".

When I hearing this song I am always remembering the moment when my life felt apart. I was so traumatised so I felt like I was dead in a moment. And this happened so quiet. So that song is always about traumatic events for me.

I can't wait until you find out about who she is as a person in the documentaries. Some have uploaded them without issues. But they are long.
I would recommend seeing more of her live performances first. So you know the songs when / if you watch the docs later. My favorite doc is Aurora Haik, (the full version that starts off going through her day) has a small concert in the woods at the end... speaking of elves. lol
Thank you for a fantastic reaction to Aurora, who in my opinion is one of the greatest artists of today. The first time I heard her - singing "Runaway" - I was completely floored. Aurora is phenomenal to see and hear perform live, which I got to do back in 2019 here in the UK. Also, you are not the first to reference Lord of the Rings in relation to Aurora. It's been said by some that you could place Aurora in the middle of almost any fairy tale and she would immediately fit like a glove. You have a new subscriber, having also seen your reaction to Aurora's cover of "Life On Mars", and I am looking forward to hearing more of your reactions. People have already told you that this song isn't about something she herself lived through. She is just very empathetic.
BUT, if you want a song that is more personal, go listen to "Little boy in the grass". It's about the 2011 massacre, where 77 people (mostly teenagers) were killed by a some far-right nutjob. One of the people killed was a friend of Aurora.
I discovered Aurora this year as well (53 here. So, like you I LOVE to discover new music). I am so happy for you that you found her as well because she is such a delight to get to know. I have not read all 166 comments, so I am not sure if this was mentioned…. But EVERYONE says the same thing you said about envisioning farriers or elves when listening to her. I am guessing that her LOVE for mature and her child like ways is not something anyone can ignore. I see you have not reacted to Through the Eyes of a Child. I know that most people are suggesting a particular live version. Well done! In her live performances, Aurora channels emotions in her songs more than anyone I have seen. Agree with those who recommended Through the Eyes of a Child or Lucky at the Nidarosdomen Cathedral performance aired by Norway's NRK channel in December 2017.

Absolutely wonderful insightful reaction! I'm in my early 70's so I have a few more years listening to music than you 😄. Aurora is definitely one of my all time favorite singers. I could make comparisons to other singers that she evokes, but she is so totally unique both as a singer/songwriter and performer that it would be unfair to make any comparisons - she's in a league all of her own! You're in for a really magical journey if you keep reacting to her music. Here's some info I like to share with reactors:
Aurora is the total package - singer, songwriter, musician, dancer, producer/arranger, choreographer, and an absolutely lovely human being (and she’s just 25 years old!). She will often perform her songs quite differently - sometimes with her band, other times stripped down to just her and one instrument, a cappella, with full orchestra, etc. - so it is definitely worth listening to different versions of the same song. Also, her videos are mini-masterpieces as well.

Dude I'm 36, so I came about right after records gave way to tapes as far as consumer products but I'm also a musician and audiophile so I thoroughly enjoyed learning about those 16" records and how they were used by the military and how they mitigated that "jarring" feeling of having the speed change abruptly. Hello from Norway =) Enjoyed the vinyl intro, Aurora is amazing, may i suggest another young Norwegian girl named Angelina Jordan, she has done covers of a bunch of classics and more contemporary stuff and even comes with more and more original songs as well, Angelina has both an official youtube channel and a cover channel where u might something to trigger your interest =)

First of all I need to say your reaction was great. I liked your comments and it was a pleasure to see it.
And yes she write her songs. She learnt to sing and play piano when was very young by herself. Also she sings not only about herself but she is very empathic and sometimes she just sings about things that moved her or are important for her (and this song is not about her personal experiences)
Also hope you will react more for her songs. She has many great songs. Some examples:

I would like to suggest that you continue to focus on her "Live" performances. This is where you'll get to see that she is not only an incredible artist, but that she is, herself, the musical instrument where every single movement, gesture, and quiver is designed to elicit a specific sound when she sings. I wish I could explain it better, but she is so far out of my realm of understanding that all I can do is watch and listen in pure amazement! Enjoy the ride into the unknown regions of your soul, as it's worth every single moment.

Hi, friend (from a Norwegian). Let me help you towards 300 subs because I think you have a bigger audience out there. Also, excuse all the ramblings below. These are the last words I wrote in this post - sorry about the long tail below.
Hey - I find vocal coaches or instrumentalists mostly boring to watch. Yeah, they deconstruct stuff - but the experience of music is more than pointing out every nut and bolt that went into building the Golden Gate Bridge. It is better to climb up on a hill and take it in as a whole (I say as someone who flew into San Francisco annually to discuss TINY details of our scientific understanding of reality at the American Geophysical Union's fall meeting). Sometimes the bigger picture is more interesting.
Aurora is an "empath" (for lack of better words as a Norwegian). She is a crazy-good writer of lyrics and music - and she is even better as a narrator/performer. But she grew up happy in a Norwegian middle-class family, going to a tiny school being as weird a kid as she still is. Thus she has not really experienced most of the things she conveys (like an artist - most "content creators" were never devils or trolls or mass murderers or blood-sucking vampires or demons or ... still the western canon is full of them things - partly inspired from mythology, partly inspired from current events
I keep writing as I listen to you. You are right about the word "pillow" 😀 This is partly because Aurora does have a Norwegian accent - but also because in traditional folk-singing up here in Scandinavia (including Iceland) - singers are free to do "vowel swapping" in our Nordic languages. Like Aurora, you will certainly have heard Bjørk do the same. Instead of singing the word "singing" like a Brit or American or Australian would do it - Scandinavians can sing it is "Sengeaen" if that feels musically/emotionally more precise for the emotion they are trying to convey. Remember, we Scandinavians are so vowel-centric that we add Æ. Ø and Å to the alphabet in different disguises.
A fun fact. Aurora once said that she shakes her body and head because she as a child watched a dog shake an intense experience of emotion (happiness, I think off) just to be more emotional with its owner and she thought "that may be a good idea" so she started doing it. This may or may not be true, because this woman is also an undercover stand-up comedian in-between performing her songs (seriously she is funny). Saying this though - when she goes into performing music she is going to a different place. She is NOT performing. (She got feedback on her hand movements when performing early on. She did not even know she was doing them - she tried to stop doing them - which made her feel disconnected from her own music)
Silja Sol is her guitarist and backing singer. Silja is so good because she knows Aurora is expressing ALL the emotions - so she is grounding the vocals by staying almost "distant and cold" to the subject matter. One emotion is enough with Aurora - and even that is a lot.
Back to the Scandinavian obsession with vowels. Aurora goes full traditional and simply drops the need for words all together while she conveys a feeling. She and Silja just give us vowels (Galadriel, I believe you think about👍 it)
Here is a point about Aurora and harmonics. She usually harmonizes with Scandinavian folk music. And that often "reduce" to the pentatonic (5 note scale - not the "modern" heptatonic seven-note scale.
This is why Aurora is known as the woman who can make anything instantly feel ancient.

Be advised. This woman record stuff in a studio (and some things are fantastic) - but it is when knowing her live you understand "I am having a Joni Mithell moment right now on youtube - before you go to a consert".
Listen to "It happened quiet" again. Aurora and Silja are both hitting notes flat and sharp in pitch (at times going flat and sharp in opposite directions - remember they sing ancient harmonics that are not on our 7-tone "piano-scale. There is no tuning going on here. Because they do not need it or want it. The create a space.
And this is the reason why this feels filled with life from the body of a young woman. They sing without tuning. This is why us old dudes know. We grew up with that.
