I feel like this has been said many times within One Piece fans, but the fascinating part about Nami's backstory is that Luffy doesn't know a damn thing about it. He just saw his friend crying in pain and decides to beat up Arlong for making Nami cry.

Interesting to see how many people start reacting to One Piece. Reaching the 1000 episodes really broke a wall (it seems). I was a big One Piece Fan as a Teenager. Not so much anymore nowadays but the story is still solid and worth the time. I am sure you will enjoy the ride like many more people proved.

Then, you realize that he doesn't care about nami's backstory because she's his friend - he simply didn't care because he knew it wouldn't change his opinion of her, or affect his choice whether to help her.

He's the odd one out, while everyone else is heavily invested in learning nami's backstory, luffy just leaves and goes on a walk. All I'm saying is, it's reasonable for some audience members to interpret luffy as being callous before the straw hat scene.

I just want to say that Luffy did this for a reason. He doesn't need to know his friend's past to help them, but also he won't force his help on them unless they really want it and need it. That's why he didn't stay to listen to Nojiko talking about Nami's past and that's why he didn't help Nami right away. He waited for her to come to him. He knew she wanted to do this alone, so he respected her wishes until she asked him for help. Can you imagine how narcissistic and selfish it would be to just come into the village and try to help right away? Imagine you're the one that's been tortured and working for 10 years, trying not anyone to find out and do it by yourself just for someone to then come and swoop in, making out of himself your hero or whatever and expecting some thanks or whatever??? Sounds awful right? That's why Luffy is so awesome. He may seem like and idiot, but he's actually really wise and emphatic. This is why I love him so much
