How to install laminate flooring beading
Вставка
- Опубліковано 15 кві 2015
- This video shows how to install Scotia beading around a laminate floor. It is essential to leave an adequate expansion gap when installing a laminate floor, which often means covering the gap with beading (unless you remove the skirting board, which is not practical in most situations). Here we cut internal and external mitres and glue them together before fixing the beading to the skirting board using the Tacwise 140E. Brought to you by www.ultimatehandyman.co.uk/how...

Just about the perfect "how to" video. Good pace, effective footage, prepared narrative and someone who clearly knows how to do the job. Many thanks.

That Mitre Fast/Loc is a God send when getting the trim corners to a spot-on 45 with no annoying gaps. I use Mitre-loc for my picture frames as well. Nice work, spot on as per usual.
Yes its very useful ;-)

Super-helpful video. A lot of good tips packed into 9:50. Tackled the beading on my newly installed laminate floor after viewing this and I know it would never have come out so well without all the good advice. Many thanks!
My advice if you're fitting flooring:
* Buy a workbench for sawing if you don't already have one (from £20 at popular DIY store)
* Buy a mitre saw (old-style manual ones from £20 at popular DIY store)
* Watch this video
* If using laminate flooring with 8mm tongue, cut off the spare tongue from the first run (where the tongue is not used because it is against the skirting). If you don't then the expansion gap on that first run might be too large for the stock beading types.

Excellent video, I will be laying my laminate in a few weeks and would never have thought to end the beading with the small piece at the end, thanks for the tips.

Good luck fitting yours ;-)
Excellent video (as always). I have installed beading before but it's never look as good as this. I'll definitely be watching this again before the next set of laminates are installed. Thanks

I've been watching a lot of UA-cam DYI vids here lately but none as impressive as this....very good.
Thanks for the comment
I agree Gary, terrific best one I have seen..
Awesome Mitre saw! Mine is a huge, cheap circular beast that beats as it sweeps as it hacks the ends off! I just finished laying laminate, and beading. Never thought to glue and the returns are brilliant idea-- going to do that at the weekend.
John Newbury Thanks, yes the saw is awesome- ua-cam.com/video/OAC_EujSRTs/v-deo.html
Much easier than hand cutting the mitres.
Thanks for the comment
Installing beading is the easiest part..... If you say so, mate!
🤣🤣🤣🤣 I find very difficult.thats the hardest part of job for me
You are right, I found it a right pain.
Spent all day beading a small pantry using pine moulding with a curved hollow in the middle and still not got it done. Never felt this stupid before. None of the internal corners is 90 degrees and the flooring isn’t level. It isn’t easy at all!
I’ve gotta fit my beading tomorrow and it’s the one part I reckon Ile struggle with hopefully the vid helps
It is easy
I had my first beading job today - took me a while to get my head around which way the mitres go! Cheers for all the tips.
+Andy Anderson It can be confusing, which is why I always draw a line using a pencil ;-)Thanks for the comment ;-)
Andy Anderson how much is it to put Down beading for 1 room please?
Great video as always. Very informative! Thanks for your effort you are always a star!

Thank you for the tip on the return, I was wondering how best to finish off a flat edge. This has been a very useful video, thanks
Great video! Why bust his chops over not removing the skirting? This is a video about adding beading to a room with pre-existing skirting. Saved me A LOT of extra work and frustration.
Thanks mate.

Great video thank you. Do you think it’s ok to glue the beading to the skirting board rather than tack it?
Hello, absolutely fantastic and very well detailed video. The idea about glueing the mitres together is superb! Thank you!!

My father told me a story of when he was an apprentice (before WW2) he had the job of putting beading round the skirting after the boards had been laid. It was winter, so someone had lit a fire for him. As he was fitting the last piece of beading, the chimney began to smoke. When he went to check, it stopped smoking -- it was the last bit of beading that was forming a seal and stopping the air getting in.
In my own house, I had vents at the corners of the hearth, and the air that roared through them was incredible. No damp under my floors!
Nice one mate! Just about to do my beading and this helped a lot. Really easy to follow unlike other vids I’ve watched. 👍🏻
Glad it helped
This was the best video on the subject so far. Professional approach and made it so easy, thank you for sharing, subscribing!
Glad it was helpful!
Thanks for the comment and sub 👍
Nice work , but I like to use white beading on the white skirting board , it makes it look as if you have used new skirting board on the laminate floor. White beading is less expensive than wood coloured beading. If you have any gaps you can fill them with decorators caulk . Makes a neat job.
Top man, seen a few places I've been going wrong! Great tip with the silicon guide piece. cheers.
I'm glad the video helped

some great tips in here, i just struggled with some beading thought i would stop and consult UA-cam now i know what im doing wrong. and the little piece for the end of the beeding to finish it off is genius. thanks.

I would just use the cheapest laminate underlay (it's normally foam). I'd only get more expensive stuff in downstairs rooms as they tend to need insulating more than upstairs rooms.
Okay mate cheers love the videos by the way keep up the top work

Thanks for the video really informative, what size nails do you use for the bead size you have shown?
Hi, great video, what size nail are you using please?
that's a handy tip with the offcut of beading whilst siliconing. very clever

Where did you get the glue from?
An excellent video, very well explained, I’ll give it a try , many thanks

Great video, thanks. Just one point though: if, like me, this is a one-off job and buying a posh buzz saw would be silly, I suggest using a full hacksaw rather than a junior hacksaw. The junior's small blade tends to have wriggle room in the slots of the mitre block, so a straight cut isn't as easy. Make sure it's a new unused blade and have a spare to hand if you're doing a lot of cuts, as the MDF will knacker the teeth. Cheers.
Thanks for the comment
Very easy to follow video, Thx Paul
luap ynneb You are welcomeThanks for the comment
do u have any other tips on cutting the mitres then I find chopsaw too fierce
+Oliver Lloyd
Yes a chop saw is no good for small bits like this.
You can use a small mitre block and junior hacksaw like this- fave.co/1mN4Xvq
Very nice job Looks great. Great video.

great video , learned a lot

Great video And really good tips! I just wanted some advice. We have concrete skirting all around the house how would I get the Beading to stay Stable? I don't think nailing them would work.. Thank you
You would have to use grab adhesive instead of pins/nails.
Thanks for the comment
Nice work Chez. I've actually just pulled up the previous owner's laminate flooring in favour of carpet but I wish I'd taken a photo of the beading to show you. It was so bad it was laughable. Yours looks the biz though mate!
BeardyRebel Thanks Kev,
We wanted laminate because of the kids, who just love spilling things on the floor every day!
Thanks for the comment ;-)
***** Yes I agree - if you've got kids or dogs, laminate is definitely the way to go. Makes for a much easier life!

I have a vinyl strip floor and drywall plastered walls (no skirting) and would like to use a glue to fix the beading. Would you advise putting the glue onto the wall or the floor. I don't think nails would hold in the Gyprock plaster.
I'd glue it to the wall only, that way the floor can expand and contract under the beading.
Thanks for the comment 👍
That Mitre Saw looks good!!
Yes, it's really good- but very difficult to find for sale- ua-cam.com/video/OAC_EujSRTs/v-deo.html
Thanks for the comment
Hi can you use super glue or do you have to use the two part one thanks
Super glue will work, I normally apply a little to both pieces as the MDF is absorbent.
Great job mate :) wish I had seen this before doing my beading, as I would of glued the miters now because there a pain to get straight. Is that all you have to do in the corners is cut them at 45?? Thanks mate
+Jack Jones
Yes, most corners are roughly 45 degrees. If you cut the beading and glue it, if the corner is out by a couple of degrees you can't tell as there will just be a tiny gap between the skirting and the beading.
Thanks for the comment ;-)
Great video. Are there any other cost friendly ways of cutting beading accurately? My beading is roughly twice the width/height
I have done it in the past using a hand held mitre saw like this- fave.co/2tyWMbl
I have some awkward angles on the skirting board in conservatory area. I want to lay some beading however the angles are not straight forward 45 or 90 degrees. How can i tell which angle i need to cut to? Is there a special tool for this?
+jaybeth69
Yes, it's well worth getting one of these for awkward angles- ua-cam.com/video/5OzFlyDFHEM/v-deo.html
I hope this helps ;-)
How do I get beading to look good on a curved wall? Is there such a thing as pvc beading?
Would appreciate any help, thank you.
+Anthony Moore
The beading in this video is made from MDF, which is pretty flexible and can be bent to accommodate most curves. If the beading won't bend you might have to kerf cut it on the back so that it will bend more easily. You can get PVC beading but I have only seen it in white so far. I guess they make UPVC windows in several different colours so it might be possible to get UPVC coloured beading.
www.ultimatehandyman.co.uk/how-to/woodworking/bending-wood
What length of the brads would be best for that?
I think I used about 25mm (1 inch) but it depends on the thickness of the beading.
Hello very helpful video, thanks for sharing.
I.am very interested to know the name of the cool miter saw you are using. If you would add link where to buy one wold be very helpful.thanks
It's the Bosch GFS 350E - ua-cam.com/video/OAC_EujSRTs/v-deo.html
Unfortunately they are rarer than hens teeth, but sometimes they pop up on ebay.
I'm not sure why Bosch stopped making them!
Thanks for the comment 👍
Nice tips cheers! I think you've got similar laminate that I've just been laying. Is that one of those Bosch power hand saws you're doing the miters with? They look useful.
Thanks, yes the Bosch mitre saws are very useful but difficult to find now.
Thanks for the comment ;-)
any chance of a demo on how to mitre angles that aren't 45 degrees, like a bay window for example?
+Matt bridgman I use the trend angle fix for those situations- ua-cam.com/video/5OzFlyDFHEM/v-deo.html
Hope this doesn't sound a silly question 😂 but if I'm replacing the skirting do I still need the scotia beading as well plz🤔 thank you
No, if you are replacing the skirting board that will cover the expansion gap, so no need for the beading.
Thanks for the comment
I'm trying to fit this exact type of beading into my new conservatory. I'm not installing skirting and The wall is plastered breezeblock. I'm wondering would just gluing it work? I'm thinking glue + the smallest masonary nails I can find?
Great vid
Edit: saw a comment with a similar issue, guess I'll try grab fill??
Any good quality grab adhesive should work ;-)
Thanks for the comment
Cool ...well explained. ..

Great video love that nail gun gonna get one, what is that tool you're cutting the mitres with please?
It is a Bosch fine cut saw, they are not very common, and I believe they are no longer made - but sometimes you can find them for sale on ebay.
ua-cam.com/video/OAC_EujSRTs/v-deo.html
Thanks for the comment
What spray and glue are you using and where can you get it
I normally use this- fave.co/2lDwrXw
It's widely available in most DIY shops etc.
Hi can you tell me the make of glue and activator? thanks good video.
Craig Allan There are several makes of this type of glue.
I always tend to use Everbuild's mitre fast as it is widely available.
Thanks for the comment
Great video, wish I’d watched it before starting my effort.
Thanks for the comment 👍
excellent video can i just ask how long are the brad nails you use
I think they were about 25-30mm 👍
Could you please tell me the name of the mitre block / electric saw you're using please?
I cant seem to find it on amazon. It looks like a great tool!
This is the saw, unfortunately they are rarer than hens teeth- ua-cam.com/video/OAC_EujSRTs/v-deo.html
Thanks for the comment 👍
Excellent tutorial. What size and type of nail shall I use to install?
If you are not using a nailer, I would just use 1" long veneer pins or similar (something without a huge head)
Thanks for the comment 👍
I can now install and cut quarter rounds. thanks. btw guys I work with use hot glue to stick together small parts of quarter rounds like you did. I don't really like that method Because that glue burns if it gets on you plus it's so messy! also they use like an actual nail gun with compressor and hose to nail quarter rounds and baseboards. I like your method.
Thanks for the comment ;-)
Hi how do you put beading around a bend on the bottom step
The beading is pretty flexible and will bend around gentle curves.
You might have to fix it in one corner, the glue it a bit at t time using a hot melt glue gun (if you can't pin it)
Failing that you might have to kerf cut it
Hi. What the machine called which u are using for cutting floor beading?
Its the Bosch fine cut saw, they are no longer made and difficult to source now-

what size nail are you using
I think they were about 25mm or maybe just a bit longer.
Thanks for the comment
Very helpful, although as a one off DIY job I don't have any of the tools you have. I am using a hand saw, mitre box and hammer lol
I don't even have a mitre board just a hammer.
nice work thanx shud come in handy tomo
You are welcome.
Thanks for the comment ;-)
please can you tell me how much workmen charge roughly to put down beading for ,1 room
I have no idea, sorry!
What mm are the nails your using? Also would you reccomend using mastic adhesive to? Very informative video mate.
I think they were about 15-18mm in length. If you use any kind of silicone/ mastic, I would not use it on the edge that meets with the laminate floor, as it will soon be damaged with the expansion and contraction.
Thanks for the comment
Hi mate, what type/size nails did you use?
I think they were Tacwise 180 brads, that were 15mm long.
I could be wrong though, as it was a while back when I filmed this.
Thanks for the comment
what is that saw and where is it from
+Oliver Lloyd
They are very difficult to find now, I'm not sure why they don't seem to sell them anymore-
ua-cam.com/video/OAC_EujSRTs/v-deo.html
How did you cut that trim end then rejoin to the end next to door frame
I cut a small piece at 45 degrees, then cut the bead at 45 degrees so that it meets up to it.
It's very similar to doing an external mitre, but then it's cut flush with the beading.
If you experiment with it a couple of times you will soon pick it up ;-)
Thanks for that gave it a go now iv got 👍
Great videos keep up them coming 🍻
How do you fill the holes especially in white beading?
You can get brad nails with a white head, but you could use decorators caulk or similar 👍
Where did you get that mitre saw mate. Not seen that before. Looks good.
I bought it from a seller on ebay about 15 years ago, but you hardly see them now.
Thanks for the comment
Hi there. Nice video.. What's called this cutting machine? And where I can find is? Name please. Thanks
Great video!
Thanks for the comment
Using adhesive for the scotia mitred corners, prior to fixing them to the wall is a great idea. I'm laying the scotia for the for this weekend.
Any tips on cutting internal and external corners for the beading? I will be using a mitre box and saw.
I don't really have any tips apart from measuring the pieces accurately, and if possible do some test cuts on some offcuts ;-)
Cheers, will do the test cuts first in some scrap wood.
Great video - thanks! What length brad do you find is best for installing Scotia?
I think I normally use either 32mm or 35mm
Thanks for the comment 👍
@@ultimatehandyman thanks!
That is a very good idea with the glue. What brand did you use?
turpi27 Mitre Fast made by Everbuild
Thanks for the comment
Hi, great video as usual but how would you calculate the angle of corners (inside and outside) that aren't 45degs, for example if walls aren't straight i.e. the angle might be less of greater than 45degs. Thanks. Steve Price.
You can use something like this- ua-cam.com/video/5OzFlyDFHEM/v-deo.html
Thanks for the comment 👍
@@ultimatehandyman Thanks.
Good video. If I had to use beading I'd usually like the beading to match skirting rather than laminate
Thanks for the comment 👍
I agree
mint good instruction well done
I'm glad the video helped
Thanks for the comment 👍
You made that look well easy lol
Dave Sandison
It is easy with the right tools LOL
Thanks for the comment ;-)
what size brads and could there be any electric or pipes
They were 15mm long - 18G brads
The brads are not long enough to go through the skirting board. There should not be any wires or cables behind that- but you can't guarantee that!
Thanks for the comment 👍
What spray is he using and what type of glue?
fave.co/2PsHFuO
Thank you for the great video. Your method is so meticulous yet so simple. The end result looked great. How is it holding up after 8 years? A nail gun makes light work of the whole job. However, if one does not have a nail gun, make sure to pre-drill the nail holes before nailing the beading to the skirting board. A nail punch is very handy for leveling off errant nails. Cheers from the Land Down Under.
It’s still fine, thanks 👍
Hopefully it will last another 8 years 🙏
Any videos on laying laminate floor diaganoly?
No, sorry.
I did film how to lay the laminate before I installed the beading, but I used a Go Pro (never used it before) and the footage and sound quality were awful, so I could not use the footage. I'm sure Go Pro's are good for outdoors but they are useless under LED lighting and don't capture sound well.
What size beading is it where you get it
Not sure about the size, it is just called Laminate flooring beading and is widely available.
binged.it/3d1PVBN
I got mine from the flooring shop, where I bought the laminate.
Whst size nail should you be using
I used 15mm long, 18G Brads.
Thanks for the comment
do you have to staple it in
No, you can use panel pins- but it's difficult to hit them by hand
Does it matter which way up the writing is on the beading??? Cos my joints look terrible!!
I normally just make certain that all the writing goes the same way- either all facing the wall- or all facing the floor.
Thanks for the comment
