The kidneys sense low blood pressure and low blood volume and release an enzyme called Renin. Renin converts angiotensinogen (a plasma protein made by the liver) into angiotensin I.
Angiotensin Converting Enzyme (ACE) converts angiotensin I into angiotensin II.
Angiotensin II has three main effects:
1. constricts arterioles to raise blood pressure.
2. stimulates the adrenal cortex to release aldosterone. Aldosterone then causes the kidneys to reabsorb more salt. This causes water to be retained and increases blood volume and thus blood pressure.
3. stimulates the posterior pituitary gland to release antidiuretic hormone, also known as vasopressin. Vasopressin causes the kidneys to retain more water, which raises blood volume and therefore raises blood pressure.
Drug Targets to Lower Blood Pressure in RAAS:
1. ACE inhibitors block ACE action
2. ARA (angiotensin receptor antagonists) block Angiotensin II from binding its targets
3. Aldo Antagonists
4. Vaptans inhibit vasopressin
5. Renin inhibitors - Наука та технологія
I worked as an educator for 15 years. This simple graph is the best i had ever seen. Thank you, Cintia NP
Thank you so much because I was completely lost today, I have been watching your videos for the past two years. You are truly amazing
Professor Heinze, I want to thank you for helping me pass my TEAS test. Your videos were very helpful. I am now using them to refresh my memory for nursing school. Thank you so very much for being so awesome and sharing your knowledge with us freely!
I can never thank you enough for your videos. I binged watched them as a refresher before I took my TEAS and my results did not disappoint. I got a 93.6 percent on my science section and 94% overall! Thank you so much for your videos and I would recommend everyone to watch you!! Thank you!! thank you!!
I love this. It's been a while since I've learned this and the way you diagrammed everything and prepared us it was just perfect. Bravo to skilled teaching.

Thank you so much, Professor Heinze. I love the way you discuss every detail.
Love it! Your videos are concise, focused and best refresher I have had in years. 1 request- Can you also add MRA/ARNI/SGLT2 inhib into this chart, as well? That would be fantastic and up today with current guidelines.
You really have a talent! I hope you continue Susanna!
