As an American I find the Canadian maple leaf beautiful & unique
The point of a flag is for it to be simple and recognisable, the Canadian flag is one of the best designed flags in the world in my opinion.
And also to mean something. The Canadian flag means nothing.
L
Stop copy pasting the same message everywhere. Also, the flag does have a significance. The red symbolizes the sacrifice of Canadian soldiers in wars (The world wars especially). The red also symbolizes our nation's British Heritage and the white symbolizes our French heritage. The maple leaf has also been a symbol of Canada for centuries, (some say as far back as the 1700s)
@@AirkaMojo If we really wanted to add significance for the men who died in ww2 why remove the flag that represented them
@@user-kh3ev6vq1v while you are right that it holds no inherent meaning, there's still meaning that can certainly be applied to the flag
@@user-kh3ev6vq1v the maple leaf like the actual leaf has symbolized the "canadien ppl" for 300 years lol.
This is a truly iconic, beautiful, flag, but don't be bummed out about the old one being retired either. You can still wave it and be a proud Canadian.
The only flag in the world that looks awesome on a hockey stick!
The only flag in the world that looks awesome on anything.

The Maple Leaf has accompanied soldiers and civilians on peacekeeping, humanitarian, and peace-making operations around the world for over fifty years. Students and travellers - including myself - have sported it on our jackets, our hoodies, our backbacks, and other apparel when we go abroad. When I come home, whether by land or by air, and I see it flying, I am reminded that - despite all my own challenges with the country of my birth - that I am first and last and always a Canadian: with an identity still being forged by the lives and sacrifices and achievements of Aboriginals, Francophones, Anglophones, and countless others with yet a different heritage who have made this land theirs. We are not English; we are not French; we are not Europeans; we are not Americans - we are Canadians.
The red ensign is what 100,000s of Canadians fought and died under its our true flag
@@BobJones-sd8eh Hundreds of thousands of Canadians fought on behalf of a foreign Empire that still had control over Canada's foreign policy. The Maple Leaf makes much better sense these days. Progress is a good thing.
@@vivo-audio How does it make better sense you clearly lack any history knowledge. foreign empire? Canadians at the time still saw themselves as BRITISH look at the videos of the Queens tour in 1951 just before she became Queen it's not a Foreign Empire it was the Empire the Canadians helped make by literally being colonists😂
@@BobJones-sd8eh I agree the Red Ensign is a much more beautiful flag and has 3x the maple leafs
@@Angelcynn-x9m Just because the Queen toured there in 1951 doesn't mean that all Canadians saw themselves as British - since the 19th century, they have always regarded themselves as proud Canadians, most with heritage form all parts of Europe. Canada had dominion status, and the Statute of Westminster, 1931, affirmed Canada's independence from Great Britain.
I love the current Canadian Flag.

As a young boy living on my grandfather's farm in Nova Scotia, I remember the controversy over having a new Canadian flag. My grandfather was dead against it. And as a young boy I couldn't understand why at the time. The Ensign was the only flag I'd ever known and that was okay with me not realizing the reasons why. I mean what kid knew anything about politics in those days? Because of my grandfather, that's what influenced me into believing there was no reason to change our flag at the time. Now I'm old enough to understand why there was so much resistance. It was the resistance to CHANGE! It only takes time and in this case it was good. We needed our own flag and it distinguishes us as no other in the world. I feel blessed to be born Canadian and proud of our flag. It's our flag and distinctly Canadian eh!
I want the Maple Leaf Forever to be our national anthem

I think it should be Baby by Justin Bieber.
The tune is grand, but the original lyrics are just as un-Canadian as the red ensign.

Thanks for being a good neighbor, Canada!
The old flag was better
Damn right
Damn right it was
Among the criteria that George Stanley wrote for the design of the new Canadian flag was this: "it should be clean cut and not cluttered." I wonder what he thought about the American flag -- 50 stars and 13 stripes. Tripartite layouts always look more graphically refined to many graphic designers and artists.
Noe Berengena he created a logo for a beer can instead of a crest for a flag
I think all countries that used to be members of the British Empire go through the stage of wanting to get rid of the union Jack from their flag as they grow up. Australia went through that stage too, but did not get around to doing anything about it. With the state of the world today and recent developments towards globalisation over the last few decades many Australians are increasingly proud of their British origins and there is now not quite the same need felt by many people to change the flag to get rid of the Union Jack. Of course there are many who still want to change the flag and become a republic but these aspirations have been put aside for some time now. In fact If there was a referendum to change the flag I don’t think it would be approved. New Zealand recently made a brave attempt to change their flag and they had a competition to select the new design but all the designs were so bad they eventually decided to stay with the current flag with the union Jack on it. I think the Canadian flag design is really good but so far neither Australian nor New Zealand have come up with anything in the same league as it as a possible alternative design, so that might be another reason why we haven’t changed the flag yet.
Nice to see the best prime minister Canada ever had who passed while in office may god rest his soul LESTER B. PEARSON

I spent Five years as a Royal Canadian Navy Sailor from 1957 thru 1962; (The Term of Enlistment was Five Years at the Time). My military expereince bouncing around the North Atlantic as Canada's Navy maintained a Monitoring Role on The Russian Fishing Factory Ships serving the dual use as a Relay Station for Transatlantic Radio Messages to and from the U.S.A. and Canada with the state of communications at the time.
I am proud of My Service under the Canadian Ensign, as it was then. I am also proud to be a Canadian and recognize the Pride and Love of Country for all native born and legal immigration efforts to become a Canadian Citizen. Over the last couple or three generations of Using the single Red Maple Leaf design on a White Background with Two Broad Red Bands at each side it is become a permanent part of My English Language Culture.
However when the design as described above was under discussion there was at least one of several versions which was not felt to be yet another effort by the then well recognized Bureaucracy Prime Minister Lester Bowles Pearson maintaining his preferred Liberal Party of Canada; the described as the N.G.P.P [ Natural Governing Political Party ] and P.M. Pearson refused to bring forward a Design which was quite similar as above except the Two Wide Bands of Red also shared a Blue Band on each side representing the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans of the Second Continent Wide North American Continent Country.
I believe after couple or three generations of Using this other design will be loved as much as the Liberal Only White & Red colours.
i see your point but red and white have been the national colours of canada since it was so designated by King George V in 1921. Red for british Roya;ty and White for the colour of the French royalty. So thats why it is red and white.
One of the most beautiful and simplest flags ever.
ᜃᜌ̥ᜋᜅᜄ̊ charlie You got simple right...
OoOoOooh MY god So, I don’t know if you realize this, but Britain is an island. Scotland is part of that island. They were British to begin with, so think about that. Also, typically when you invade someplace, you don’t add their flag to yours, you just fly yours. The UK flag represents the union of England, Scotland, and N. Ireland. That’s why it’s called the UNITED Kingdom.
*laughs in anime*
I think it's one of the most beautiful flags, very simple, distinct and symbolic of the nation.

The red ensign represented whom? Some Canadians or all Canadians? The red ensign represented British Canadians. The Maple Leaf is representative of all Canadians. The red ensign would not be recognized throughout the world. The red ensign would be confused with all the other flags which have the Union Jack positioned in the hoist. The Maple Leaf is recognized through out the world as the symbol of Canada!!
mark hollingsworth ignorant. The red ensign crest represented English, Scottish, Irish and French as the founder of this country. The flag clearly represented the British control of the country but also the important representation of founding groups. Now look at the leaf, what does is represent? A common leaf of the land that we’re on, no history, no respect for the generations and generations of people who built this country and fought for it in multiple wars. I’m not even part of the group on the crest but the Red Ensign is superior by far.
A lesson to be drawn from Stanley was that he persevere through difficulties and believes in what he is doing, he ultimately succeeded. While everyone has a right to their opinion about the previous Canadian flag, I’m so glad of the one we have now. To me it is a potent symbol that stands for equality, freedom and I’m damn proud of it.
This flag is very close to all Canadians hearts now and it is hard to think that back then we (or the Canadians) were fighting against it then. “Go Canada”

Maybe as a Yank, I shouldn't be telling our neighbors upstairs what flags they should use, but Pearson had the right idea - the new flag is unique, easily recognizable, and affirms Canada as an independent country.
There's many, many, *many* flags that follow the "British Ensign" format of a Union Jack canton and a seal on a blue/red flag. All of them are virtually indistinguishable from a distance, the Red Ensign included. They don't so much give the impression of proud, independent nations as they do continued colonial dependencies, because the only thing that most people are going to be able to recognize from the distance is the British Flag.
The way I see it, the Red Ensign defines Canada in relation to the bygone Empire, while the leaf flag defines Canada simply as itself - which as what every good symbol (or flag) should be able to do.
Thanks bud
Good points.
Why is there no mention that there was a national open competition in 1964-65 to submit designs for a new flag ? 3,541 designs were submitted. We simply thought Stanley had won the competition fair and square. But perhaps his design was picked in advance as the ' winning ' design. At the time, a lot of Canadians didn't like Stanley's design, but soon almost all of us grew to love it, as we do today.
I think the old flag was much better but you Canadians fly your flag high and proudly
The old flag meant the British still had dominion over us. We are independent now.
You're British i presume?.Understandable.
I'm Canadian- but sometimes I think that the old flag was much better. It was so lovely with so much symbolism- Perhaps I'm too much of an anglophile- however I don't see that as a fault- but rather a blessing. God save the Queen, and heaven bless the Maple Leaf Forever.
I wonder why Australia and New Zealand haven't changed theirs yet.
I think the Retired Red Ensign could cover all of North America (except for Mexico because that's Habla Espanol) It isn't clear if the Red Ensign was an official Flag. It is an offshoot of the Queen Anne Red Ensign very much like The Stars and Stripes had been fabricated from. The American Insurrection is an overrated folklore! There is much evidence in history The British decimated The Young USA in the War of 1812 but had struck a deal to help reconstruct but it was Conditional like all contracts to help get someone on Their feet persay. I speak with the ENGLISH Language, the De Facto language of The United States of America. The nation has more Rules, Regulations, Laws & Taxes than any other on Earth, so remind Me How the USA is a "Free Country" again!
So proud of our Canadian Flag!
Imagine if Pearson hadn't been persistent in creating our own flag! We probably wouldn't have the maple leaf today! 🇨🇦
As of October 2020, the waiting time for the Peace Tower flag exceeds 100 years.
Do they really put a brand new flag up every single day? Doesn't that seem kinda wasteful?
Not really. Used flags are purchased from people on that massive, 48 year long waiting list. So really, it's no different than stores stocking their shelves with it and people buying it from there.
+Bob Dole It created a job for someone :)
Uh, each one of those used flags is given, free, to a person on the wait list. I get mine in approximately 33 years! Wonderful tradition!

Why didnt they hold a referandum on it like they did in NZ

i'm by no means a staunch supporter of the monarchy, but purely esthetically speaking, i think the previous flag, crest on red background and union jack was a nicer flag. it envokes history of where we came from. the modern flag of the maple leaf is only a symbol of the national tree.
Yes but us the French and new Canadians weren't so fond of it, so Pearson wanted a symbol that everyone could use and give Canadians an identity. When you mention "it envokes history of where we came from", not everyone came from the UK dude, Canada's a country built off different tribes of people. So whether you like it or not, the maple leaf was the best choice for a new Canadian symbol.
computergames5 i disagree, the old flag has the crest where you can find the british lion, irish harp, scottish lion, flours de lys and maple leaf to represent ethnic groups. the canton union jack to remind we are part of the commonwealth. but i do recognize that it was an unpopular flag especially with the french, given the political times, i also understand the urgency and pitch for a more unifying symbol...
indeed, but that really doesn't justify it when you have a union jack that dominated a good chunk of the flag and that really didn't appeal to lots of people back in the day.
computergames5 well, i would counter argue that Canada remains in all ways a constitutional monarchy, with the queen acting as head of state (symbolically of course!) In that context, a flag bearing the Union Jack is appropriate. Changing the flag to do away with our ties to the British Empire ignores that fact. Were it to me, a flag change is applicable once the country opts to become a republic and turns the page on its British Colonial past. In Canada's case this was window dressing since it chose not to reform its parliamentary system.
+Jeddaz EightyOne so every country that is monarchy to Elizabeth II should bare a Union Jack? Not really, once again, it wasn't just English people and scots that occupies the land, and every country deserves a symbol. And even if Canada is a monarchy, most people don't even care about the monarchy as a whole, it's just a symbol. Even then, Canada's British ties is over and it's been like that a long time ago, it's commonwealth memberships grants no extra power to the UK and the queens role as a monarch is completely different than the UK's role. Canadians wanted an identity, and they've created one of the most recognizable well known flags out there.
As a Canadian of only 27 years of age, I regard our Country's current flag as a 'Liberal Flag'. It doesn't swell any Canadian pride within me. Its predecessor is preferable.
+B Strut I mixed on the issue. On the one hand they tried to erase Canada's heritage. On the other, hand

They literally created a flag whose colours find their meaning from England and France whose colours where taken from the crusades. Which is kinda awesome.
+Gar Yeah it was settled by parliamentary closure. We didn't even get to vote on it. If we had it would have never came to be.

P.M. John Diefenbacker is also the only Internationally recognized Statesman of Canada. Do not be fooled by the Liberal Bumpf of Pearson; the Honour coming his way from the Suez Canal foolishness of Britain & France is because the President Eisenhower's Administration wished to ease the affront to Britain and France which was at the time only about a decade after the tremendous loss of Lives by W.W.Two. ___ P.M. Diefenbaker was the Commonwealth Leader and unltimately the World Leader to back down the United Kingdom in supporting South Africa's Apartheid Regime and the cruelty which came out of this. President Mandala travelled to Canada during Conservative Prime Minister Stephen Harper's Administration for President Mandella to Honour Canada and be Honoured by Canada as a Canadian Citizen.
( Please do not mock Randy MOGK for His ignorance of Canadian History). Diefenbaker was not a coward when he defended the civil rights of Japanese Canadians in 1942. When Japanese Canadians were put into internment camps during WW2 Dief protested. That was one of the most courageous stands in Canadian history. Pearson was a wimp. He did whatever John Kennedy wanted.

+hifijohn Nope, its all those beer and cigarette labels who look like the Canadian flag.
What would Canadian businesses and local sports teams use in their logos if it weren't for the maple leaf?
The Canadian flag ought to contain some blue and thus be red, white and blue like those of its sibling Anglo-Saxon countries, the UK, USA, Australia and NZ. Blue would also reflect the red, white and blue of its important French heritage and also the dark blue of the lovely blue and white flag of Quebec. There is still time to add blue to the Canadian flag, perhaps with a blue rimmed Maple leaf?
I disgree
That's so sweet!
I am old enough to remember the flag controversy, I was in Grade 5 at the time. I remember what was a famous Duncan McPherson cartoon about it: all the major players, Pearson, Diefenbaker etc were drawn as toddlers playing in a sandbox trying to put their version of the flag on top of a sand castle. British dominion? What is this 1900? New Zealand is a Commonwealth realm, it has nothing to do with the British other than legacy, but didn't stop Canada and most other Commonwealth realms from adopting autochthonous flags instead of continuing with British ensigns.
Or what you don't think Canada is proud of its British heritage? They have the Union Jack, officially known as the Royal Union flag, as an official flag for symbolic purposes like being raised during Commonwealth day.
Why is red and white "traditional"? I remember the same thing with blue borders, which I thought was more representative of the two oceans on either side of Canada.
I can't answer that exactly but it's something about a king saying red and white were Canada's colors, and they were used basically everywhere
