    The Bassist Derek Forbes from Glasgow has written more killer bass lines than any other ,,check out Love song or the American ,,in the late 70,s early 80,s they blew away all comers live ,they were untouchable !

    TIME IS THE GREATEST CRITIC!
    I was a Simple Minds fan in the mid to late 80's and ignored their earlier work.
    I came across their song "Theme for Great Cities" a couple of years ago. It sounded so timeless and contemporary, then I was blown away that it was created in 1981!

    Hi there guys, this track is one of my favourite SM's tracks. I had the great fortune to see them play live 4 times and they were phenomenal each time. The album to that track was/is brilliant too. Colours Fly and Catherine Wheel is now playing in my head as I type this, give it a spin! 🙂 Even if I am 2 years late commenting!

    I first heard this on CHOMFM from Montreal (I grew up near the border of VT/Quebec) when it came out and it became an immediate favorite. Someone mentioned in another comment that you have to listen to the entire album, it’s so true. I’ve continued to listen to it - storyline, build up, drama, haunting and mystery. I love this album still today.

    New Gold Dream was written and recorded shortly after period of turmoil within the band. Their drummer Brian McGhee had left, they had had no chart success, were performing in front of small audiences, and had just changed record labels.
    They would have began working on the album New Gold Dream in late 1981. It was in the spring of 1982 that Kerr wrote the lyrics to accompany the music for the title track New Gold Dream. After going through a rough period for the band, Kerr was feeling optimistic with the change in seasons, winter was over, spring was here, and things were working out well with their new record label.
    When Kerr includes the years 81-82-83-84, it is Kerr looking forward with optimism for what was to come for the band. Anticipating the good times ahead, and preparing for challenges that might be before them.

      I saw them play twice at The Lyceum on The Strand - both times in 1982 about 6 months apart. I guess at this point they were still not really putting forward dates for a full tour but having gone once it allowed me to go again. I have never known an audience so mesmerised by the whole of the New Gold Dream album that they were promoting at the time. That together with the earlier songs (I Travel, Love Song, This Fear of Gods, Sweat in Bullet and Theme for Great Cities to name just a few) made the whole event brilliant. I did like the Sparkle in the Rain album too but by the time I saw them again in 86 on the Once Upon A Time tour (at The Bowl in Milton Keynes) it was not quite the same.

    U2 / Simple Minds were almost a double act in the early to mid 1980's. They had a really close relationship, and it comes across in both bands albums around that time. Great review again, guys !

    • @intothemusic908

      What's interesting to me is realizing years later that it was Simple Minds who around '82-83 had already made it, so to speak, while U2 was up and coming. Back then I thought it was the other way around. Then, of course, Joshua Tree changed everything.

    • @mrsuperger5429

      @@intothemusic908 Thanks for the reply, Greg. In the early to mid- 1980's, both U2 and Simple Minds shared the stage at huge rock festivals in Europe. They were definitely kindred spirits. In the UK, it was U2's third album, War, in 1983, that made them a household name, as we say over here. As for Simple Minds, who are from my hometown of Glasgow, Scotland, the New Gold Dream album was massively popular. Best wishes, from Scotland.

      @@intothemusic908Please don't compare Simple Minds 79-82 to U2 ...Simple Minds were light years ahead on every level and it was U2 who were influenced by Simple Minds, if you don't believe me check out the early albums, it all went pear shaped post 1982 with band members being fired or leaving, Simple minds still produced good songs occasionally in later years but they sold out recording " Don't you " for the American Market and lost a lot of fans in the process, although I wasn't one of them,but to be honest I only really listen to the earlier stuff apart from "Street fighting years " from 1989 which is good in parts especially the title track.

    Back in the early 1980's my wife was talking to a coworker about albums and that we really liked Billy Idol. He said that if we like B.I. we'd probably like Simple Minds as well. It may seem as though that's a stretch, but they both present a deep, full resonant voice. I've been a fan of Simple Minds ever since, and this is one of those rare albums that I just can't seem to get tired of listening to.
    Another stand out album, among a bunch of great albums, is "Good News From the Next World", and even though I'm an old guy, if I'm skiing the bumps when, "Great Leap Forward" comes up on my play list, I'll ski hard enough to bring on a coronary!

    • @Maitatron

      This coworker talked about Simple Minds before don't you forget about me was released? Cause Billy Idol was first approached by the songwriters of don't you forget about me but he rejected the proposition to sing it, then they they approached Simple Minds. So i guess the songwriters also thought that Jim Kerr had a voice like Billy Idol, your coworker was right or prophetic if he said that before don't you forget about me.

      Good news from the next world is one of SM's poorest albums only a couple of songs on it that stand up with their best they are she's a river and Hypnotized the rest of the album is as dull as dishwater and I've been a died in the wool fan since 1985. They didn't release a consistently good album until Graffity soul. They desperately need the return of Michael Macneil with Derek Forbes and Mel Gaynor respectively. We can only imagine how good their last 3 albums could have been if Macneil had of been involved in the writing and recording? They would have been true simple minds albums the first since 1989 but JK and CB are too stubborn for that.

    Props for picking some less obvious Simple Minds to listen to - almost everyone choses 'Don't You (Forget About Me)' - a great little pop song, but the one they didn't actually write themselves! The New Gold Dream album is a much revered album amongst fans and critics alike. Like The Joshua Tree by U2, it's a completely unique album, you won't hear anything else quite like it. Definitely worth a listen to in its entirety in sequence. It has quite an ethereal magical mysterious feel to it throughout.
    Jim's songwriting particularly in the early days was very patchwork-quilt like giving the songs a fabulous air of mystery to them which still lingers even after having been acquainted with these songs for the best part of 40 years. Charlie is a really underrated guitar player. The band's early years in the late 70's / early 80's are super interesting, very prolific with no two albums sounding quite the same. Then obviously came the success and FM friendly stadium rock, the wheels started to come off a little bit throughout the 1990's, but there's still magic to be found in and amongst everything they've done, and Jim and Charlie who have essentially always been the core of Simple Minds are lovely guys, and are still cranking out some great songs to this day and have a very rich and varied back catalog to delve into.

      @@grizzadams2110 Yes, as a big U2 fan also - I'm very much aware of this, though whilst both albums are very ambient sounding - they are still two very distinctly different albums. Fun fact: The bass part from 'Big Sleep' on SM's New Gold Dream album was occasionally heard being played by Adam during soundchecks on U2's TUF tour.

      The wheels completely came off during The 90's just one half decent track on our secrets are the same. Neapolis and cry were utter crap too. They didn't get back on track until Graffity soul.

    • @smackeye
      @smackeye 2 роки тому

      @@MrChippiechappie Yeah, not the biggest fan of Real Life or Neapolis in comparison to other albums down the years, though they have their moments. I did like GNFTNW, a good solid rock album - though a bit bloated and bombastic, but sometimes you need a bit of that in your life. Personally I actually really like a lot of the Cry album. This was the beginning of a rebirth of sorts for SM, it's not an absolute classic or anything, but for me there are some really good songs on it that finally see SM evolving a bit again (something they did fantastically right through the 80's) after a bit of stagnation through the 90's.

    It's good to see you guys react to a track from one of THE all-time classic electronic pop albums. I prefer the album version to whatever this remix is but it's a great song in any form. The track featuring Herbie Hancock you alluded to (Hunter & the Hunted) is probably my favourite Simple Minds song. They really lost their way from the mid 80's onwards but they still occasionally put out some good songs. "Hypnotised" is a track from the mid-90's i really liked as it harks back to the more subdued & moody style they perfected on the "New Gold Dream" album

    • @MrChippiechappie

      They didn’t lose their way until MacNeil the keyboard player left as he was a critical part of their sound and one half of the writing partnership with Birchill the guitarist.

      @Maitatron 10 місяців тому

      @@MrChippiechappie Half of the writing partnership ? You sure that MacNeil was so important in the songwriting, i am not talking about the lyrics which is more a Jim Kerr's thing.
