It's a combination of things in Volvo's cars and lorries from the early 1970's, when these vehicles were designed.
The engine is basically the same as in the Volvo 164, but with a different camshaft for lower power and higher low-speed torque.
The size is due to this being a "car". Volvo and Scania also produced larger off-road vechicles at the time.

If you're wondering, there is also a Tgb 12. It was an amphibious version of the Tgb 13 but it was canceled due to budgetary reasons after 5 prototypes were built. They also experimented with a 8x8 version but it was deemed that the increased off-road capabilities weren't worth the extra cost.

Yes, they never really existed. But a lot of versions did:
Terrängbil 11 is the basic 4X4.
Pansarvärnsterrängbil 1111 is the anti-armour version.
Radioterrängbil 1112/1113 is the 11 with a fixed radio install.
Terrängbil 12 is the basic 6X6.
Radiolänkterrängbil 1312 is a radiolink vehicle with a separate larger cabin at the rear.
Stabsterrängbil 1313 is a staff vehicle.
Sjukvårdstransportterrängbil 1314 is a medevac vehicle with room for four stretchers.
Ambulansterrängbil 1315 is a full-scale ambulance (by military standard) with lights and siren.
Batteriplatsterrängbil 1321 is a fire-control vehicle for the aterillery.
Then the "flatbed versions, which are mechanically different with a 5-speed gearbox.
Terrängbil 21 troop transport (16 soldiers).
Terrängbil 22 as version 21 above, but with part of the rear compartment designed to carry Luftvärnsrobotsystem 70 or Luftvärnsrobotsystem 90 (anti-aircraft robot systems).

To make it civil you'll need to remove the gunmount and the restricted lights. The Framhjulsdrift is the switch to run the front wheel drive, otherwise it is rear wheel drive only. Could save some fuel. The odd lightswitch has the orange/red knob to push down to access full lighting, to not give away ypur location to airsurveillance. But as you need either low beam or DRL lighting in Sweden all 24/7/365 when driving it was a constant fiddling. The aluminium house for the airfilter was and modification done after several carburator fires when backfiring, moving the filter further away from the carburators made it safer. The Stromberg carburators needs ATF fluid in the pipe from the vacuum trottles, leave 1cm at the top while pushing the throttlebody up while filling it, this leaves room for the damper piston and filled chambers will get you a calmer run on the engine. Getting ATF oil on the fragile membranes under the lid makes them expand and become almost impossible to reinstall. Make sure you have new membranes if you plan on taking them apart. I guess you'll need a working engine for the MOT? These vehicles where made for 18 year old conscripts. Me being 196cm I had no oroblem getting in, but getting on the clutch pedal underneath the steeingwheel without having my knee jamming up the steering made it tougher to drive. But not as hard as the Hägglund 206 tracked articulated transport, the bay you sit in those is so narrow that I had to cross my legs and operate the gas and the brake with the opposit feets! ;) I would extend tge exhaust to the rear of the vehicle if you plan on making it more livable. The rule that it only has to emerge behind the passenger compartment does not really work in a camper mod. Getting exhaustpipes in free length and also mufflers and bends ought to take you to an Biltema store, those also sell lot's of boat accesoires that ought to be useful when converting to 12 Volt. Of course, you could use the 24 volt to run the starter and the fans and wipers, but just do a separate 12 volt system for the camper having it connected to one of the batteries at a time. But changing the engine out I figure it will be s 12 volt only, then boatwipermotors might be useful? Maybe the horn will need to be exchanged, the front fan might be a problem though, but maybe it is like other Volvos from the same time, I don't know. There are plenty of things that originate in other Volvos, the inner light in the roof was used in both Volvo PV544 and thd P130 Amazon. The vertical ashtray was the rear ashtrays for the PV544. All the holed "wood" is a composit called Masonite and ought to make it easy to switch it out to some more sound proofing materials. Get some earmufflers while your at it. ;) Now I should stop ranting.

The long troop version was called Tgb 21 and carried 16-18 soldiers.
When you get the hang of it you can go from normal drive to low drive while driving, like when you go in or out of terrain you dont have to stop.
We used snow chains on these when we would go really off road, it basically takes you anywhere you want to go with snowchains. To bad about the engine, the good thing about it is that it will work forever, it will never quit on you. I know of the 4 cyl version going through the ice and left on the bottom until spring. They changed oil and it started on the first try will go forever!!

I have seen one of these 6 wheelers swim in mud above it's bottom plates and still not get stuck.
We also had a 6 wheeled truck which was a troop transport.
If I recall correctly we called it the 21.

"Framhjulsdrift" is front wheel drive in high gear. If you go into low gear all wheel drive is on by default.
    "Differentialspärr" is differential lock.
High-low gear is selected by taking the stick out to the extreme right, push forward or backward to engage high or low gear, then return to the normal gear change pattern again.
The gear stick is from the Volvo 140 series, just with the rear gear blocking lever added.
The indicator lamps are from left to right:
    Turn indicator vehicle (green).
    Turn indicator trailer (green).
    High beam (blue).
    No charging (red).
    Brake (red).
    Low oil pressure (red).
The selector just left of the key is for the dark-lights (mörkläggningsbelysning). Military vehicles had special light arrangements for driving as invisible as possible in the dark.

Opening the windshield is also for driving in light restricted conditions, as it will reduce any glare and reflections.
I guess it may be useful in the summer heat too, but that wasn't the main reason they did it.

The UA-cam algorithm actually works! Got recommended one of your videos because I consume everything to do with these old Volvo trucks. Don't worry about losing a few Aussie viewers, as you'll find many new Euros with this new content. I've just binged the whole series and can't wait to see what you do with this TGB13. I've been desperate for a TGB1314, or maybe a TGB21 for yonks and would love to do an overland camper version, so I'll be making notes. Enginewise, most people opt for a Mercedes Diesel (OM606?) but I've also see Land Rover Diesels used (look up Henry the Man Cave Camper for a Land Rover conversion in a C303). Personally, I'd love to just upgrade it to a newer Volvo motor - either a D5 or a T6 whiteblock. Anyway, Hi from a new subscriber. Please visit the UK on your Euro tour and I'll be happy to buy you a beer!

You mentioned in an earlier video that you were looking for somewhere to do woodworking. Maybe you could try contacting RANSailing here on UA-cam, they're also a travel vlog type channel and they are currently building a sailboat in Skåne. They might know somewhere you can work or even let you borrow some tools in exchange for help with sanding on the hull. 😄

Nice with a Tgb13. You say that the body has no rust? When you take off the reinforce brackets in the back cornors you will see rust. Also when you take off the wooden strips.
But not more than you can handle.
Sadly that you will replace the engine. The B30 demands very low maintenance.

  • @ghostwalker100

if overlanding it, i'd stick with a volvo engine then probably be a bolt in swap with no adapter plates needed, maybe a turbo diesel.
the gun mount, could you not convert it to somehow lift the bikes up onto the roof? or use it to hold other thing like a shower or aerial? pintle hook makes a good recovery point if you get stuck
landrover 101 or other cab overs usually have some kind of ring step attached to the wheel. might be worth a look see.
for the fuel second jerry can on the back or permanent mount the one ther and plumb it into existing tank?

Uh just a spontaneous idea- there are some Unimog camper meetings this summer in germany. You should maybe consider Abenteuer & Allrad in Bad Kissingen End of June, and a (more or less private) Unimog camper forum meeting in September in early September in Mid- germany near Hannover / Göttingen. We‘ll be at both…

Tip, if you need an affordable stand alone engine ECU for most diesel engines.
Go for the Baldur DSL1 or DID1 depending on the engine you go for.
If you go full analog/mechanical injection system, then of course you will need an ECU.
