- Czapek began its horological odyssey as Patek, Czapek et Cie, and when Czapek left to start his own company, Patek hired Philippe and became Patek Philippe. Through the many upheavels in the watch industry, Czapek disappeared only to return in its current form in 2012. That will be the main focus of this video.

Both Franciszek Czapek and Antoni Patek were Polish and stared their extraordinary watch-making career in Poland. Cracovie means Krakow or Cracow and is where Czapek had his shop in Southern Poland.
Thanks Musiclover! Once this pandemic is over, I'd love to visit Kraków. Take care, Bill
The movement of these watches are extremely beautiful even without precious metal, clean cut & easily dismantled for ease of maintenance, thruly well thought of.
Thanks Bill for a well researched subject👍👌❤️
Thanks, John ... the pleasure is all mine! Take care, Bill
I believe that blue dial Czapek Faubourg de Cracovie Chronograph, has a 'ricochet' dial pattern on it. From the Monochrome article back in 2018: The name of this pattern, which dates back to François Czapek himself, is described as: “Intersecting circular lines form a pattern of bas-relief squares that make the dial come alive, recalling the wave interference pattern a stone might make when ricocheting on water“.
I would not have known about this stunning watch without your video Bill! First-class presentation as always. Thank you! Regards, G.
Hey Shadow! Thanks for that! That's interesting how they came up with the "ricochet" name but perfectly understandable ... having watched wave flow in and out of tide pools. Take care, Bill
The Antarctique is absolutely stunning. It could make a convincing claim to be an “one watch collection” - although I’m personally a maximalist - the more timepieces the better!
Unfortunately, Justice, I share your conviction ... I should sell more of my collection. Take care, bill
Interesting watches with an intriguing history, thanks Bill.
Yes GMT, they used to be the ..."Philippe" in Patek Philippe! Take care, Bill
Congrats to the gentlemen who created the Antarctique at Czapek. Seems to me they understood three significant design goals for any steel sports watch aimed at the top of the class: (1) Reliable field tool, with common-sense water, shock, and magnetism resistances. (2) Unobtrusive, you travel with one watch, it has to work in the bush and any business formality you'll likely encounter here with us in the early 21st. (3) most important for me, it has to be inconspicuous but still art as a bracelet. Ok, as Genta proved, it tells time. Also seems to me that buying a sports watch in daily use and banging it up, pays tribute to the artisans. Bravo Zulu. John.
Now those are nice things to say about a watch, John. Take care and stay safe, Bill 😷
I will be picking up my first Czapek tomorow...a Faubourg chrono...excited and looking forward to it. Selling a Rolex to make room for this new addition.
Michael, once you pick up your Czapek, tell us how you like it! Even better post a picture of it on High Horology Lounge.😉 Take care, Bill
I am binge watching all your videos. Very insightful!
Glad you like them Matty! Take care, Bill😷
Yeah, Czapek always has my attention to a certain point. Id get a Quai des Bergues or an SXH2 when I finish my buying list in the future.
Ok Tippy, I'm sure Czapek will wait. Take care, Bill
Really enjoy your channel Bill always learning more about watches !!
Glad to hear it, Junior. Even if we (...myself at least...) cannot afford most of these watches, we can learn about what makes them worth having and look for these qualities on watches we can afford! Take care, Bill
My dream watch from Czapek is the Tao, under the Faubourg de Cracovie collection. Chronograph with Grand Feu dial- terrific combo!
Very interesting choice Gilberto! They're nice watches. Take care, Bill
@@watchartsci I also found a Quai des Bergues in steel with a Grand Feu enamel dial that I like. However, I'm currently evaluating whether I'm willing to live with the quirk of the day-power reserve indicator (only one hand for both)...
Cheers.
This video is very informative. Thanks, Bill. Czapek prices itself to be more expensive than Rolex but less than Patek Philippe or FP Journe making itself to be in an awkward price range. For Rolex fans, they will stick with Rolex. For people who can afford to buy high end watches, I think they would rather go with Patek Philippe or FP Journe.
Hi Eugene, I like Czapek, and their basic designs, but liking one brand never excludes any others. Take care, Bill
Great video Bill. A very interesting brand indeed.
Bruce, which way would you go on the Antarctique? That or a Yacht-Master II in oyster steel? They're about the same price. Take care, Bill
Thanks for another terrific video Bill. I was looking at that Antarctique subscription piece just yesterday. Looks like a cool watch with an interesting movement, but for 19 grand I’d go for the VC Overseas.
Jeffrey, that is exactly what they will face. They have a very nice watch ... especially in the band ... but for 19k these days, there are lots of other temptations. An Overseas or a Quai d'Ille would be higher on my list ... or even a Breguet Tradition ... or a Gondolo 5124 ... or a Roger Dubuis Easy Diver... so many options in the sports watch (and not-so-sports watch) for around the same price. Take care, Bill
Amazing watches Bill. Thanks
Yes Anastase, they have quite a mix and range! Take care, Bill
Thanks Bill I just love your channel! Catching up with your content. I like this brand but just think that the new Tonda PF Is a bit more interesting
I agree with you Cesar. Love the new Tonda PFs! Take care, Bill
I'm a bit late to the party with Czapek, so I though I'd come to you for the skinny! As ever, you didn't disappoint! Thanks for the lowdown. Intriguing. But expensive (not necessarily 'too'), so I need to do some more research! My grail is a high horology movement inside a true (sub-40mm, modest, robust, lumed, waterproof) tool watch, so the Antarctique is a rare option (Overseas too bling).
James, check out the Urban Jürgensen 'Alfred' too. (ua-cam.com/video/afneWMQEakY/v-deo.html ) Take care and be safe, Bill😷
@@watchartsci Thanks Bill - heard of them first in your collection. Just checked them out and very impressed. The One looks good in the sports segment, but the Alfred and other collections are stunning. And all 3Htz! Maybe the watches Breguet and JLC should/would be making if free from their corporate shackles?! Thanks so much for the tip.
Love the Antartique !!
Hey Marcus, that is a handsome watch ... a gorgeous bracelet! Take care, Bill
Good content. Nice video. Their base model is Quai des Bergues only CHF 12000
Thanks for the info, Kaz. I missed that base price...thought it was around CHF.14k. My bad. Take care, Bill
Sorry Bill for being so late to the party but Tim Mosso just covered this watch and he lorded over this movement and I'm just not on board, other then the addition of a micro rotor this movement shares similarities with dozens of generic movement's and finger bridges have been done a thousand times before, i just dont ger it, nothing about this movement pokes me in the eye and makes me go WOW! is it me? should i be drooling over this movement like everyone else?
Nothing to be sorry about-we all don't like the same thing. Take care, Bill
I live czapek they make beautiful watches. A grail watch for sure
Paul, for such a high quality watch, they're very well-made. Take care and be safe, Bill😷
i subscribed to the antarictque - one of the most exciting sports chic watches since ages in my view ... great techniques used for the dial crafting and the movement is just mind-blowing...
Wow Guy! When you get it, let us know all about it. Which one did you get? Take care, Bill
WatchArtSci i wish i have had the balls to go for the burgundy, but of course i went with blue - should be delivered in october ...
Bravo 👏 I wonder if You have any experience in buying watches prior seeing them “in metal”?
Karen Stepanov 🙏 yep, have done that with around 90% of my watches - check my insta #aguy2watch you will see that i am not talking 5 watches ... but i do watch a lot of videos and talk to ppl before buying anything ... this is how bill got me into buying a rolf lang 🤣😂
Great choice. I am intrigued about trying it on. Says Cellini is a distributor, so I'll go there. Good call on the blue. I would have done the same not only because I love blue but from a reseale you almost can't go wrong. Hopefully for you, maybe it blows up like the FP CS.
I think your wording of "exclusive" is a good term for a movement that is not in-house, but made exclusively for the manufacturer. It makes good sense in terms of a young company and finance. This is virtually the same as Laurent Ferrier and their relationship with la Fabrique du Temps movement maker. Agenhor also supplies companies, such as Faberge or Van Cleef & Arpels. Another great video.
Hey SouthNC! Indeed! Here's a little about Agenhor. ua-cam.com/video/0BiUdjn_G3E/v-deo.html Take care, Bill
I hanks for the interesting video. Did you check out the dial on the Antarctique Orion Nebula? I looked all over and couldn’t find out what it’s made from. It just says hand varnished...
Hi Brian, I know a couple of Czapek guys ... let me check. Take care, Bill
Ive never seen the antarctique burgundy
Do you like it Boris? Take care, Bill
Recycled gold is the one recovered from old cell phones, computers, jewelry.
Thanks Kaz, that is indeed recycled! I'll just jump in a toxic waste site and see what I can pull out! Again, thank you for your help on these ... you may have noticed that I started with the image you sent me. Take care, Bill
So, recycled precious metals is a movement that’s becoming very popular in the world of luxury jewelry. It’s gold, platinum or palladium that’s been recycled from old jewelry, melted-down unsold jewelry or even refined out of decommissioned computer parts. It’s far less environmentally-damaging that mining constantly for new metals. Companies like Chopard, Piaget, Bulgari, Dior’s haute joaillerie line and Tiffany & Co. have been experimenting with it. It’s been interesting to see this development as luxury brands become more conscious.
Thanks Justice! That was an angle that I really haven't thought of before. Take care, bill
Great presentation, Bill. I’ve been interested in the brand for a while.
They've done some interesting things, Mark ... in a short period, too! Take care, Bill
An interesting fact about the new Czapek ANTARCTIQUE TERRE ADELIE is all of its dial color is the natural color from a metal like gold, silver. They are not using any color and thus dial will hold the color for a long time.
Thanks Nowshed! I did not know that... now I do. Take care, Bill
Hey Bill very informative video. Do you know if these are ever available grey market or at steep discounts? I’d love to pick one up but there are sometimes preowned precious metal Langes that pop up in the 16k price range
Hi Lix, you'd have to check the secondary markets, but in looking at eBay and C24, they're starting around $15k. Take care, Bill
@@watchartsci thanks Bill. I was searching for the Quai Des Burgues with ‘Rosewood’ dial (maroon/burgundyish). I contacted an AD exquisite timepieces, they reached out to Czapek and there are two left so I ordered one and traded some watches in as a down payment. The same watch preowned is listed in Watchbox for 3k over MSRP, go figure. Most people will probably assume there aren’t any left as it’s no longer advertised on the Czapek site
@@Goob2112 Good move! How do you like the watch?
@@watchartsci I just placed the order yesterday and may have to wait a few weeks to get it, I’ll let you know when I receive it. Their new in-house micro rotor movement looks cool but I actually like the chronode manual wind better
So many great brands out there that aren't Patek or Rolex.
Yes indeed, Crappy! Patek and Rolex make good watches, but so too do a lot of other watchmakers ... many better and more innovative. Take care, Bill
It’s really weird how both czapek and patek had same start ; one end up to be the best watchmaker and the other end and start as re-establishment company !! How unfortunate 😔 for czapek , I guess even today patek is not or was the best when you could see other company doing well like lange and fp journe ,, etc
Hi Mohamed, you're right, things change. Patek was the business guy and both Czapek and Philippe were the watchmakers ... maybe Czapek just needed to get a business partner? Take care, Bill
Not sure I like the idea of recycled gold for a rotor. It may have been recycled from false teeth. However, I do like the SXH5 calibre.
It comes from recycled electronics
Both the wearer and the hands glow in the dark, Rog. Take care, Bill
