This was the most outstanding, thought-provoking, engaging, relevant edutainment that I have EVER seen. I absolutely love this show and how it has given me a newfound pride in coming from such a strong ancestry. It reminds me to not take for granted the basic liberties that I enjoy like having a house full of books and being able to read. Whew. I am so grateful for this show. I pray that when my daughter is old enough to watch it, it will be available for her viewing.

We need to study this movie as it pertains to how we define ourselves by skin tone within our own race. Too many times have I been told that I look nice for a dark skinned woman. It did not affect me negatively in terms of my confidence and achievements in life. However, it did cause me to rethink just how narrow the definition of beauty is within our race. The same problems exist between African Americans and Africans. We are still Stuck On Stupid!

  • @chachi1843

Am African, and am always saying something that other Africans find controversial, but deep down know that is true. Light skin beauty is something that has been celebrated in Africa way before white people ever stepped their feet on African land, there are age old African poems, proverbs and songs talking about light skin beauty. Not to say dark skin isn't celebrated, Africans celebrate beauty in general, but when you hear a poem or song talking beauty with reference to skin color, not skin texture, but skin color, its always in reference to light skin. People think that skin bleaching in Africa was influenced by racism and imperialism, what they don't know is that Africans had ways of lightening skin, way before they set their eyes on a white person. They used and still use herbs to lighten skin (this may not be the case in some parts of Africa), an age old trend that predates racism and imperialism. What became a problem was that white people used skin color as a measure of superiority, and indeed today in Africa (in some cases) skin lightening is influence by that narrative.
In spite of all the negativity that comes with light skin beauty, we shouldn't always see attraction to light skin as something that is perpetuated by racism or imperialism, because appreciation for light skin beauty in Africa predates racism and imperialism; just as white people see a darker shade of their skin as more attractive, people of African descent see a lighter shade of their skin as more attractive, its all part of human nature.
According to scientific research, people who may be considered as "beautiful" are treated better than those who may be considered as average or unattractive consciously and subconsciously. So if a light skin person of African descent is treated better than others, its shouldn't always be tied to racism or imperialism (which might be true in some cases), it might just be human nature.

It had real potential, but had some flaws that made it difficult to watch.
The actors were all great and a lot of the story as well, but the use of modern day music completely took me out of the story.
The writing also fluctuated between brilliant and subpar.

Amirah's deep voice may throw some folks off, but if you look at her she doesn't appear to be much, if _any_, older than Jurnee or Aldis. Unless she's one of those 40-is-the-next-30 chicks like Gabrielle Union, she's very likely a little closer to Aldis and Jurnee's age ranges.

Heh, I was right. Amirah is 29-30 years old, just about the same age as Aldis and Jurnee. I do see your point, though, as I've heard of 9 and 10 year old girls in Central and South America having children.

She's 38 which means she could have a young adult as a child. It wouldn't be unbelievable for her to be a young mother or for her character to be a little older than 38. And Jurnee could easily pass as a 19 or 20 year old on the show.
