Thank you so much, using paint thinner actually worked, I used the paint thinner that is used to thin down polyurethane paints, but I didn't put the whole motor in it cuz I was worried it would remove the enamel coating on the motor winding, I filled a small cub with paint thinner and lowered the bottom part pf the motor in it for a few minutes, the paint thinner turned from clear to black , repeated the process after replacing the thinner till there was no black residue left, put it back together and it worked it lower speed fine but then when pressing the switch all the way it smoked again, so left it running for a minute on low speed and it stopped smoking and back to normal,
    failed attempts:
tried contact cleaner first before disassembling the drill, that didn't work,
after opening the drill i opened the back of the motor , it was press fit, had to make a small tool to open it , some light hammering was involved to bend the taps out if the way and take the back of the motor out
cleaned the carbon brushes, put it back together , that didn't fix it,
cleaned between the copper plates with a needle, put it back together , that didn't fix it,
then cleaned the copper plates with alcohol, that also didn't work,
then finally with nothing to lose tried paint thinner, and that what actually worked

Thank you for taking the time to create this tutorial. I had the same issue with my Porter Cable drill. The motor was covered in grime. I used the only cleaner I had Oxyclean spray, works fine now as far as I can tell. 👍🍻🇨🇦

These types of drills are usually low quality, I'm not surprised the motor started smoking

I was skeptical at first but then I figure what do i have to lose... and I tried it. IT WORKS! I did exactly the same thing, soak the motor in thinner and let it swim around for a few minutes then let it dry for a couple of hours. After putting everything back, and switching it on, it was still smoking but i keep pressing the trigger and smoke is gone. There is still some sparks inside but it's way better than the smoke. Should last a while I think. Anyway, just wanted to say THANKS!

Rippa Sama is it the same thinner that is used to thin the paint?

    • @rippasama
      @rippasama 6 років тому +1

Yes, that's right. But it will only clean off all the black soot and dirt caused by the spark. It worked for a few days then it was totally blown. I opened it up and it seems that one of the brushes was broken. Unfortunately for my model, I cannot replace the brushes. I ended up buying a new china brand drill which cost the same as the price of a new motor (bosch) and I'm happy with it!

It worked! Haha saved me 100 bucks. I did take the motor apart on the brush side and clean the communtator bars and gaps between each. Reoiled the bushing and It works like it should

Bro, this worked fine for me.. I used Iso Propyl Alcohol (Lamposov used in spirit lamp) instead of thinner.. Thanks a lot..

If any of you don' t want to dissemble the unit, just spray the opening with brake cleaner, just make sure the front of the drill is facing up when spraying so that the liquid will drain out at the bottom, it has fixed my smoking B&D drill. i hope it helps.

One thing this video didn't mention that is extremely important is do not use a thinner that has ANY amount of acetone in it near the brushes in the motor. Acetone will severely weaken the carbon brushes and then it's just a matter of a very short time before one breaks

Wish there was an easier way to find this when i thought my drill was just dying. Had my suspicions a year ago, cleaned a bit with a paper towel recently and it's started working again.

Nice video, I'd have used a syringe to force some liquid in to help clean. I have that exact same drill, 2 of them actually, one I'm converting to Li-ion, haven't had to clean the motor yet but it's good to know how, if it ever comes up.

The only problem is those were ball bearings the reason why they were moving around because you probably washed the grease out those ball bearings have to have Grease and you can't just put WD-40 on there that won't work ball bearings get hot they have to have Grease when putting those ball bearings back in the place you might want added a little bit of a electrical grease in there

This does in fact happen due to worn carbon brushes, carbon does wear out with high range friction.

It worked, no more smoking, but now my drill doesn't spin. The bit extending from the motor spins, that locks into the tri-gear set, which should move the next tri-gear set on the other side of the barrier, those are locked into the pins, but somehow this doesn't translate into a spinning drill (Is it bizarre that mine had only 4 ball bearings inside with 4 small cylinders filling 4/8 holes? Model CD180s).
Should the first tri-gear set rotate when operating, or should they spin in place and force the larger ring to rotate? Any thoughts?

well I tried my best but maybe after 9 years of use it’s about time to replace it with a new one. The motor was just way too slow and perhaps the battery 🔋 is not charging properly anymore. However, after doing this it didn’t smoke anymore.
