Great job! I've just embedded your video in my CK-12 lesson. Your work it is definitely important (although not recognized as it should like many other youtubers). Thanks a lot!.
0:56 wow, they created a theory to get rid of future stress associated with conducting experimentation/research and finding evidence to support other proposed theories that could potentially cause even more gaps and questioning in their understanding, and in pre-existing/accepted theories, well played!
So in short, gradualism is the slow process of speciation throughout a period of time, mainly millions of years, which observes examples of a very simplified progression of how species evolve from one another, while punctuated equilibrium observes species undergoing little evolutionary change overtime, and the ecosystem has to drastically change for those species to evolve. Correct?
Thanks for your input Joi. I agree that more detail and examples would be nice. I try to keep my videos short because I know most students have a lot competing for their time. I will try to work more animation into future videos and I included a link in the description that has some examples. If you want me to give some examples right here just let me know. It may help others too.
nice and succinct. well done. thank you. off topic but i just picked up a book titled "lysenko's ghost." i haven't read it yet but it is setting itself up to be a history of epigenetics, an idea that can be traced back to ancient greece, of course, but most notably associated with jean baptiste lamarck's "theory of acquired inheritence." this book is hinting that it is going to provide examples that illustrate that lysenko may not have been entirely wrong and that epigenetics is dismissed offhand without even being given any consideration in modern day, western especially, textbooks. anyway, all of that got me to thinking about a really good book "the 6th great extinction" and the authors treatment of lyell and cuvier and catastrophism vs gradualism and i landed here, lol. stephen jay gould rocks! thanks for the vid
I am glad you found my channel, and I agree that epigenetics are seriously underrated. I am sure as more research is done we'll here more and more about the topic and hopefully see it show up in textbooks, publishers need something to put in their nth edition right?
yes, i took evolution as an undergrad and the entire text was this flimsy paperback. and of course that had to treat abiogenesis and the origins of the universe, lol. maybe the could have written a decent book filled with evolutionary theories, not just darwins. maybe don williamson's larval transfer theory and paedomorphosis, just to name a couple. oh well. are you an evolutionary biologist?
So the lack of evidence of Gradualism is the evidence of Punctuated Equilibrium and therefor both are correct. That's circular logic. I call BS. This video was done very well, props to the creator. I just think Darwinism has become its own religion.
Actually change is logically slow in stable times, and fast in chaotic times. It takes change to create change after all. No circular logic needed or shown. However I.D./Creationism (poh-tay-toh/ poh-taw-toh ;) ) is definitely a classic case of circular logic, because in attempting to explain complexity, it starts with complexity (indeed infinite complexity!) "... Props to the creator." Was that a nod to the idea of a 'Creator'? If so, cleverly done Imo. In my experience it's only creationists that push the label Darwinism... as if it encompasses the totality of evolutionary research/and or thought in the last century and a half. Science doesn't need faith, it has evidence. Lots of it. Have you read Lynn Margulis's and her son Dorian Sagan's books on symbiogenesis and other related topics? Are you familiar with Luis Lerman's bubble model for abiogenesis engineering, (aka, the bubblesol cycle)? I'm currently rereading Michael Behe's books along with Margulis's books. Behe's books don't compare imo. His concept of Irreducible complexity says nothing about producible complexity, and all his supposed examples of that have been thoroughly debunked from what I've read. He dismisses glue traps, and presumably gravity traps, as functional precursors labeling them merely 'conceptional precursors'. (wtf!) Check out the Venus fly trap and related species @ www.talkorigons.org (search for irreducible complexity)
No, it's not. Mutation is one mechanism for change, whereas punctuated equilibrium is a disruption of the ecological status quo, due to presumably to catastrophic events isolating groups, and creating new niches and new selection pressures. Author Robert Felix's book on magnetic reversals, extinctions, and evolutionary leaps is very interesting Imo.(I forgot the book's title though) Symbiosis via symbiotic mergers is one of the main mechanisms for large evolutionary change Imo.
The it is an illustration representing the fossil record, which both claim support form. I put it up on each so the viewers could visually see the gradual transition between each species (gradualism), and the gaps between each species (punctualism). I hope that makes sense.
I just watched a video saying that gradualism has little fossil records compared to punctuated...this means there is more proof of punctuated equilibrium than gradualism which means currently, this idea that evolution is a slow process that created many different species is false. This means that i have been lied to by my peers on the definition of evolution and proof behind the Darwinian evolution idea🤷🏾♂️
While we could argue back and forth on whether it is observed or not, or even how observation is defined, it is more important to note that observation isn't a necessary component for asserting truth. There are plenty of scientific ideas and theories that that are not "observed." However, I will add that is there are ever observations that contrary to scientific beliefs, those beliefs are either changed to match these new observations, or thrown out completely and new ideas put forth.
The scientific method requires observations of nature to formulate and test hypotheses.[1] It consists of these steps:[2][3] Asking a question about a natural phenomenon Making observations of the phenomenon Hypothesizing an explanation for the phenomenon Predicting logical, observable consequences of the hypothesis that have not yet been investigated Testing the hypothesis’ predictions by an experiment, observational study, field study, or simulation Forming a conclusion from data gathered in the experiment, or making a revised/new hypothesis and repeating the process Writing out a description of the method of observation and the results or conclusions reached Review of the results by peers with experience researching the same phenomenon
2 Minute Classroom Catastrophism can be shown by typing folded mountains into google images. The entire world is covered with sedimentary rock layers that are bent without breaking at the folds. You can’t bend sedimentary rock layers to the extent that they are bent without breaking at the folds by slow and gradual processes. We witness earthquakes at fault lines, not bending of rock layers. The global flood of Noah’s day is a viable theory explaining geology of the world. Scripture can be trusted historically and also spiritually for your salvation. Because comic books don't represent reality? Evolution isn't magical, it takes time and/or calamity to cause major changes. I'm of course referring to changes in the germ line that can be passed on.
