in the Star Wars universe, BBY means "before the battle of Yavin". basically before the original trilogy

and that's really an out of universe thing. not a delineation that makes sense within it. It's like marking things with the Battle of Gettysburg.

Thanks, Emme! 🪐 BBY 5 means 5 years before the Battle of Yavin (which occurred in A NEW HOPE). Since ROGUE ONE occurred just before A NEW HOPE, this series begins roughly 5 years before ROGUE ONE. And those people in bubbles were prostitutes... similar to the Red Light District of Amsterdam. This series is great thus far!!! I hope you continue to enjoy it. #Emme #StarWars #Andor #DisneyPlus

My wife and I are new to your channel. We watched the first three episodes right when they dropped at 3 AM on Wednesday. Then we immediately started watching reactors. Then we rewatched it over the weekend...and am now watching more reactors...waiting for Ep 4 to drop in the morning.
We really enjoyed your inquisitive spirit. You really asked pertinent questions, too.
This is a brand new system and planet. We've never been here before.
Also, the BBY 5 is a dating system that has been used in Star Wars novels forever. BBY means Before the Battle of Yavin (which is represented in Star Wars: A New Hope - Episode 4 (which you just saw). SO, you already know the time period, but they want to make it CLEAR to everyone that this happened five years before Rogue One and Episode IV. The opposing date is ABY (After the Battle of Yavin). This will help you navigate the time periods...if you ever get into the nvoels. Just saying.
The look on your face when Verlo died at the beginning. The more we thought about HOW he could've died...a friend of ours said that IF he butted his head back at the right angle when the guard came up to him...he could've nose bone up into his brain...killing him instantly. Not easy to do, obviously, but that can happen...and it looks like it DID happen. Random thing, but sure changed the trajectory of that encounter.
The other guard was BSing him to hope to stay alive, but there was NO way that Cassian would win if he brought Verlo dead and this guy back to the predinct. The other guard would've said a TOTALLY different story. Yeah, shooting him in the face was really the ONLY way out.
Interesting how this show starts out with him reluctantly killing someone, then out right killing the other...and the beginning of Rogue One, he had the capacity to kill his informant (someone he was close to) just because he had become a liability (injured) and wasn't goint be able to escape. Compromised his position...he had to go.
Cassian reminds us a little of a young Han Solo. A person who always has a number of things going at the same time. Most of the time he's beind, but eventually he evens up with his contacts, but they are always looking for him. BUT, it does seem that he's possibly at the end of his rope...at this moment.
Brasso, his best mate...is really a stand up kind of guy. Like you said, how many people would stick their neck out on a murder charge...though...Cassian didn't actually tell him WHY he needed his aliby.
Oh, we already love B2emo...the driod. Somthing about the way it moves and talks...with its stutter...so cute.
We were really confused at first with the Kinari time period. I stopped the episode and checked the to see if the subtitles were on...and they were. Hmmm. But, as you saw, too...we could understand pretty much what was happening JUST by the physical cues.
You have really good instincts. We agree that we think that that was the last time he saw his sister.
We have now subscribed to your channel...anxiously awaiting your reactions to Andor S1:Ep 2 and Ep 3, then eventually Ep 4 (which we will watch in about 5 hours).
Well...just wanted to say. Thank you. We will continue with your channel...for you ADD to the conversation. Talk to you...later.

The writing, acting and visual effects have all been fantastic so far with this show. Anyone telling you the show is "boring" clearly doesn't appreciate the tone the show has crafted or all of the suspense and just want all action. I think there will be more action in some episodes but this show is designed to be more about small scale missions or objectives that Cassian must carry out to help the Rebellion

@alittlecreepywhenyou in fairness, no one ever attempted a show like this set in the Star Wars universe before. Even Rogue One, the template, had big set pieces. This is a show that favors big dialogue instead

@@moviescatsmargs Tony Gilroy is the rudder that the future of Star Wars needs for true direction in the future.
Only time will tell if that will be the case. Or not.
Regardless, Andor was truly a glimmer of hope compared to what Disney made of the god awful Boba Fett and Obi-Wan Kenobi shows. There is no comparison, at all.

Saw 3 episodes drop and decided to give it a try. Man, was I pleasantly surprised! it's an in-universe time measuring tool
there's BBY and ABY (After the Battle of Yavin)
the Battle of Yavin takes place in episode IV, so basically this is 5 years before A New Hope

So saw some people call the show "boring" which I guess I can see if you prefer action but I adored it all had a very cold war era feel to it. Loved the architecture as well The Preox-Morlana Corporate Zone gave me massive Soviet-era vibes mostly because their architecture had a very soviet 1950s look to them. I know most fans will never notice this but it's cool that they took ideas from WW2 and the cold war era, Clone Wars acting as WW2 while the new powers rise. it all felt very HBO-like Chornobyl for me combined with Man in the High Castle a very different feel and one I think Star Wars needed.
I know they'll be people who aren't into slower shows more so people who have been exposed to modern Star Wars and something like the MCU but if you enjoy slower Drama then this should be right at home. Now do I think the whole series will be slow, no of course not seems EP1 and EP2 were to build up the third episode which will lead into the next episodes. The show alone showcased the average soldier and civilian better than any of the Star Wars films and may I add had some of the best writing and dialogue out of the whole series while being able to maintain a mature tone with little hints of fun character moments shining through the darkness.
Respect that this show isn't for everyone but not a fan of people who say "This isn't Star Wars" because too many Star Wars is different things and for me, this is Star Wars with a fresh new spin on it something we haven't seen in live action unless you count the novels that dive more into spy aspects and of course tactual side of the galaxy like Heir to the Empire. This show is as much Star Wars as the original films, Prequels, Sequels, Animation, and Live-action TV Shows.
So BBY has never been mentioned in an actual Star Wars movie or show. Fans created BBY and ABY calendar so they could measure in universe events which was later picked up by writers in the 1990s who included BBY/ABY in Star Wars Novels from my understanding but it was never used in film. BBY stands for "Before the battle of Yavin" the events of A New Hope that lead to the destruction of the Death Star. A New Hope takes place in 1 BBY while Andor takes place in 5 BBY just 5 years before A New Hope. You also have ABY which stands for "After the Battle of Yavin" for example Empire Strikes Back takes place in 3 ABY just three years after A New Hope.
BBY is not used in universe the galaxy has it's own calendar with different cultures having there own like our real world. Pretty much if you told Andor that it's 5 years before the Battle of Yavin he'd look at you like "What's the Battle of Yavin" simply because it hasn't happened yet. Would be like saying to someone from 1999 that it's two years before 9/11 they'd have no idea what you're talking about. After Battle of Yavin though could've been used by the Rebels as the event already happened.
Star Wars Timeline to A New Hope:
Knights of the Old Republic - 3957 BBY (Amazing video game but fun example of how far Star Wars can go back set 4000 years before A New Hope.)
Episode l: The Phantom Menace - 32 BBY
Episode III: Attack of the Clones - 22 BBY
The Clone Wars Movie - 22 BBY
The Clone Wars TV Show - 22 BBY to 19 BBY
Episode III: Revenge of the Sith - 19 BBY (End of the Clone Wars, Rise of the Empire.)
The Bad Batch - 19/18 BBY
Solo: A Star Wars Story - 13-10 BBY
Obi Wan Show - 9 BBY
Andor - 5 BBY (Flashbacks set maybe around 19 BBY.)
Star Wars: Rebels - 5 BBY to 1 BBY
Rogue One: A Star Wars Story - 1 BBY
Episode IV: A New Hope - 1 BBY to 0 ABY

So much in this first episode seems to be trying super hard to turn people off. I found myself not only bored but just annoyed like I get what they were trying to do with setting things up and giving him a reason to be on the run but then you got this annoying security office going against his superiors wishes for what? to try and work his way up the ladder? Like the whole opening conflict doesnt even make sense if Andor is supposed to kinda be a shady smuggler type whys he seemingly going out of his way to irritate people he should be avoiding like the plague. Like the second he saw those guys are the bar.... I guess I will come back later.. Nah they are clearly annoyed by my presence so lets just stick around

soviet union had very different styles of architecture during its 70 year existence. which one do you have in mind? in early 1950s it was so called stalinist empire style (a neo classical style). didn't see that in this episode. or was that comment due to your hollywood propaganda fed ignorance, where ussr was always a authoritarian state where everything was always the same everywhere throughout its existence from buildings to climate .

@@magus104 Horrible take. It's your opinion but it isn't a good one. He obviously is looking for his SISTER... Lots of people are mouthy with out picking fights outside. Probably the only lead he had on his sister in ages... Also if you see 2 security officers at a bar/brothel the last thing you want to do is to leave abruptly right when you see them or right after you first talk to them. That's suspicious and COPS are more likely to follow you and question you. Tell me you do't know about cops without telling me you don't know about cops/criminals. Also Syril Karn's desire to go behind his lacksadaisacal commanders orders to investigate a murder is completely believable after you see the type of mother/upbringing he has had with his mom running him down all the time lol. Pretty horrible take bro.

sorry if anyone else already made the comment but the reason he killed the 2nd guard was cause at first the guard said, "YOU KILLED HIM!" and then he realized he wasn't in a position to be accusing him of murder him since Andor was pointing a gun at him. So he quickly started making up a story as to why he DIDN'T kill him, basically trying to tell Andor that he wouldn't rat on him, but Andor knew it was too late since he originally accused him of murder and he had to kill him.

The security officer doesn't cover up the murder by Cassian, who he does not even know, it's because investigating a murder would mean a lot of work and paperwork, and it is more comfortable and less work for him to put in the report that it was an accident or similar, it's corruption basically, but the other officer does not agree and will investigate even disobeying orders.

    It's not a "slow burn" - it's a "REAL burn"
Not everything is "wham! bam! Thankyou mam!" action - because real life is not like that:
It's about doing your job, having friends and family you can trust - and then one or two events that completely disrupt everything, which become a test of your character - your "Andor moment"
Not - having action adventures and shooting people every single week as if it's nothing
