Rubbish dump Ratting - They're everywhere!

  • We're hunting rats with airguns. And before that we're testing which pellet has the most penetrative power - a .177, a .20 or a .22 - on a copy of rude bestseller '50 Shades of Gray'. It's Pellet Power & Performance episode 4. Roy Lupton, Mark Gilchrist and Andy Crow are armed with Webleys in different calibres. Whatever page their pellet lands on, they have to read it out.
This all takes place near a dump in Norwich which is crawling with rats. They join up with the KPS guys for a big night out. It's a 250+ rat night, with night vision and thermal imaging to help the airgunners.
BTW - sorry to say we have now given away the 50 Shades of Grey book!

    Why shoot rats?
There are thought to be more than 10 million rats in the UK (…yuk).
Rats carry many diseases which can spread to humans, normally through their urine, including: leptospirosis or Weil's disease, salmonella, listeria, toxoplasma gondii and hantavirus.
Rodent contamination also presents a significant risk to livestock health. Both cattle and sheep will ingest a large proportion of faecal contamination (Daniels & Hutchings 2001).
Rats can also inflict structural damage. They can cause fires by gnawing away the insulation around electrical cables, floods by puncturing pipes and they chew through gas pipes. The insurance sector has estimated that rodent damage to wiring is responsible for 25% of all electrical fires in buildings.
Finally, rats can ruin an organisation's reputation. If clients and customers spot evidence of rodent infestation in the premises you manage, they are unlikely to want to do business with you.

What a great video. Back in the early 60's I worked on a large egg producing farm. The owner would let a couple of us shoot rats in the granary. It would always be night when we went and we used .22 rim fires with bird shot. The owner gave us a bonus of a nickle a tail for the rats. They would show up in the light from our headlamps just as your rats did at the plant. We would sometimes make $20 each.

Loving all these "You should use a proper gun!" comments. I bet half of you have never actually gone hunting/shooting in your life.
When it comes to shooting in enclosed areas the air rifle is actually far superior to an actual firearm in many ways.
1, Air rifles require far less of a backstop (Although they are still required)
2, It is much MUCH safer shooting at quarry that may be up trees as if you miss that pellet won't be travelling far before it hits the ground (Although you still have to be careful) With a firearm that bullet can travel for miles before it starts coming down.
3, Even at 12ftlb (UK legal limit) an air rifle still has the power to dispatch a rabbit up to 65+ yards away.
4, Although some Air rifles can cost more than there powder burning cousins the cost of pellets is far less than that of a 22 rimfire or .177.
5, Air rifles with silencers fitted are far quieter than a powder burner.
Air rifles are considered toys to everyone who hasn't used one. But lets see you get the amounts of rats these fella's just did with your 7.62..

Wow, all that good meat gone to waste! When I was a little kid, my dad died not long after losing his job when the saw mill closed down south. So it was up to me and my little brother with our .22s to hunt rabbits for food for the rest of the family. When the rabbits were scarce, me and Davey would head to the town dump in the evening and shoot rats with our BB guns. Momma had the best recipe for stewing them rats in a crock pot filled with vegetables..........it was even better than them rabbits.

Where were you educated ? Rats carry and transmit a number of diseases to humans as well as fleas which also transmit other diseases to humans, plus they stink

    • @tshorse
      @tshorse 10 років тому

ah, so you kill the vermin before they reach someone's house so as not to give them bubonic plague and dump fleas on them? wow, we are in deep shit with these evil creatures running amuck. you had better call the authorities so they can eradicate them because you and your sidekick will never put an end to these little creatures with your popguns.

I loved doing that, except all we had back then was 22 shorts. You shoot and it was a minute or 2 till they came back. after about 29 minutes they would no longer come out, but we'd go back a couple of hours later, and they would be right back. I'd loved to have had a good pellet rifle back then.

Can't get enough of these ratting videos !
Guess I'm sick in some way or another.
But can't say that I even mind watching them in the throws of death when a shot might be less than perfect !
So now then, let's get down to the important stuff gentlemen,
which gun do you feel was the most effective, and the most accurate of the lot ?
How long have you each owned them, and been shooting them ?
Which of the scopes do you feel were the most effective during the night hunting expedition ?
    Well,
I suppose that will be quite enough for the moment.
Keep up with the ratting videos.
Doesn't look like you'll be running out of targets anytime soon !
