  • "We don't need to disagree less. We need to disagree better."
Musician, social scientist, best-selling author and the president of the American Enterprise Institute Arthur Brooks received an honorary doctorate at today's commencement exercises and delivered a remarkable address that everyone's been talking about since.
He included a great story about a BYU briefcase he carries, thoughts from President Nelson and Helaman 5, fascinating social science research and important insight into major current issues.
All of this from BYU's "favorite Catholic.

Why am I agreeing with a catholic? Why am I agreeing with a theist at all?
Because even if I think what he believes in is stupid, I think he might have other views that have value.
This is an amazing speech, we need to listen to each other, we need to understand we are all human. I’m totally guilty of eye rolling, especially with SJWs. Let’s stop eye rolling and maybe see what other have to say, and maybe even consider their positions. I know I have recently. Not everything your opponent says is bunk, there are reasons they believe what they believe. Give each other a chance at least, sit down and talk

Wish the video had lasted longer at the end; we were there for our daughter's graduation, and the ovation we gave him lasted somewhat longer than that; I feel like he turned around again to acknowledge it after shaking hands with immediate dignitaries behind him.

Outstanding! Once is not enough to listen to this speech. Most of us would benefit from once a month...and fortunately it is enjoyable enough to do just that. Highly recommended.

My only disagreement with the speaker - I value civility. I think civility is a great stepping stone on the road from contempt and rudeness to love and understanding. If you can't at least be civil, your thoughts and words will not resonate with those you wish to influence. His points are very well taken.

A revelation to brother Cowdery, in Section 18 of the Doctrine and Covenants the Lord had this to say: "Contend against no church, save it be the church of the devil." This man is evidence of that scripture.
