Credit to Glen Powell for successfully pulling off one of the hardest character types: the heel who isn't a complete heel. He added the right level of humanity to Hangman to make him a likeable antagonist.
Except Glen Powell adds a bit of humor to Hangman. 1:27 - 1:47 I mean, how can you not laugh at his face of undiluted cockiness just begging to be obliterated, that you genuinely feel the smirk drop down? You can even see this during the training. I swear, Powell should never throw that away in any performance he does, especially in comedies.
I love how he looks genuinely angry and frightened that he’s not allowed to launch when he’s alone. He’s cocky and arrogant around people because that’s his image, and we see this when he eventually see him save Mav and Rooster, but whilst still on the aircraft carrier and requesting permission to launch, he looks seriously worried that they might not make it out alive and he’s mad they won’t let him risk his life to help them. Brilliant character.
Eh, if I was to be a bit picky, I kind of wish we got to see a scene with how Hangman goes after them. Like maybe when learning that Rooster is also down, he begins to think about what Maverick told everyone about "Never leaving your wingman." or "Don't think, just do.", and so decides to go after them. But Vice Admiral Simpson and Bates order him to stand down and that there’s nothing they could do. To which Hangman on intercoms says something like, “Seriously?” or “F*** off.”. The Vice Admirals order him him 2 - 4 more times to stand down or they will relieve Hangman of duty. To which the other Top Gun grads, witnessing the whole act, proceed to get in the 2 men’s way, giving a look that says, "You relieve Hangman, you relieve all of us.". Things are about to get confrontational, until they get a call that the F-14 Tomcat with Maverick and Rooster is coming back, to which Simpson and Bates agree to send Hangman to make sure the two get back safety. Now that would be a perfect balance of conflict, while also giving the team a moment to show that they stand with one another, even improving Hangman's arc. Heck, I can even see a moment where one of them tells Hangman, “Now we look like a team.”.
He really is. His name is similar to Iceman’s but he’s got young Mavericks attitude and personality. He’s cocky and reckless. Just like the first movie in the end, Maverick got held back from the mission, just like Hangman. But they both came in at the end to save the day. I thought that was a cool parallel.
Hangman was that one hot, arrogant, talented jerk with a sense of humor, and a hidden heart of gold everybody loves at the end. 😂 and it was obvious from the start. Also, I laughed so hard when Hangman played 'Slow Ride' at the bar when arguing with Rooster and telling Rooster he sucks because he is too slow. 🤣that was hilarious!
Interesting thought on why Maverick chose Hangman to stay behind as a backup: Maverick knew that Hangman was the best pilot in his class but that his cockiness would not make him a good fit for the first team--Maverick needed his team to follow his lead, and Hangman was too unpredictable. Maverick also knew that he had the best pilot in his class backing him up, which gave him a safety net should something go awry, as it did after Maverick's team accomplished their mission. The plan worked, as it was Hangman who saved Maverick's life after being sent to clean up and help bring him and Rooster home. Being the first pilot to go fight the enemy to bring Maverick home fit Hangman's skills and unpredictability much better than being the second chief of Maverick's first team.
It is also interesting that Hangman being held back mimics what happened in the 3rd act of the original movie where Mavrick was held back. Mavrick ends up saving the day then too.
@@_baller There was a different reason he was held back, though, IIRC. Maverick was still dealing with the grief and loss of confidence after Goose's death, so the mission commanders were afraid Maverick might chicken out on the mission. The end result was the same with both Maverick and Hangman. Each was held back from the first team in his mission, and each took advantage of the opportunity being held back gave him to fly in and save the day.
The writing for his character was so damn good. Made him cocky & arrogant jerk then had him save the day. Some mediocre writer would’ve killed him off since that’s always the fate of a cocky character.
Glen Powell was devastated when he didn't get the part of Rooster, but agreed to come back when he was told they were considering him for another role. He insisted on an expansion of the part of Hangman before he would take it. Perhaps saving the day was part of the expansion.
“I’m cool. I’m cool.” I actually really liked this line from hangman. It’s like the man just got a rise out of rooster and then was subtly roasting Rooster charging him which can be seen as immature and childish.
You start out very much disliking Hang Man. He’s arrogant, cocky and condescending. But he matures. After pushing Rooster into a rage Hangman is the one who tells Rooster “Give ‘em Hell!” as their taking off. And he genuinely meant it. Then he saves both of their lives. He had matured; his cocky arrogance is now Self Confidence. And his offer of friendship is genuine.
Me at the beginning of the film: God, what a smug egocentric alpha male trope. Why would the writers ruin their own script with such an old-ass stereotype!?" 🙄 Me 100 minutes later: Damn, what a character development!! Give me more of Hangman, now! 👏🏼😃😃👏🏼
"You know it, hrmph, you know I am right". He smiled and started direct into those eyes then he uttered that in complete confidence and wandered off. Just wow!
Glenn Powell is quite an amazing character in the movie as Hangman, the charecter simmiar to Ice Man. He's a superb actor. I watched his film "Anyone But You" some time ago, and he played a fantastic role in it. After Tom Cruise, if I was looking forward to anyone in "Top Gun Maverick," it's definitely Glenn Powell. They're casting Miles Teller in "Top Gun 3," but in my opinion, Glenn Powell should have been given the lead role. He deserves more.
So it never crossed the mind of Admiral Simpson to have some of those Top Gun pilots standing by in F-35's to provided air cover for the returning planes.
I feel as though Glen Powell can only play either a real down to earth nice guy like in Hidden Figures or a cocky asshole like this movie. There’s no in between for him. Though he did become better as the film went on.
I’ve known a few “hangmen” homies in my life… cocky, pretentious but at the end of it all you know they are good bros that won’t let you down when shts real.
Any Star Wars readers here? More specific: the X-Wing novels by Stackpole/Allston? After seeing this movie, I found me an actor for Bror Jace! 😎 He could also play a younger Dash Rendar if they ever did a Solo sequel.
Simply loved the little nuances which made it clear that Hangman is obviously gay. That also explains his arrogance that he needed in order to survive mentally in the NAVY. On the other hand I just loved how Phoenix is a tough and straight woman with a mexican background that didn't need to be potrayed as a lesbian. I just LOVE how anti-cliches defined that script.
Credit to Glen Powell for successfully pulling off one of the hardest character types: the heel who isn't a complete heel. He added the right level of humanity to Hangman to make him a likeable antagonist.
Couldn't agree more! I'm looking forward to seeing Devotion
He is more of an anti-hero. The antagonist would always be the enemy.
He definitely screams “cocky quarterback” vibes…
played the part of a douchbag perfectly
Badass. I think maverick had him on standby just in case because he knew how good he was and would save the day.
It's incredible how they managed to give him a legit character arc in less than 5 minutes of screentime
The power of good writing
Well, the answer is he is very good. 😊
Reminds me of Hudson in Aliens. Same amount of screen time and one of the best arcs in an action movie.
Ah yes, the "jerk with a heart of gold" character archtype. Can't get enough of it.
This has unfortunately become my “type” in terms of men and fictional characters. Except I refer to them as “a**holes with redeemable qualities”
Except Glen Powell adds a bit of humor to Hangman.

“I am good rooster, I’m very good” my favourite line from the movie
I use that line at work when my colleagues say something positive about me with the "good" word related in ;)
Probably the coolest phrase and my favorite one. It's calming and yet menacing.

Hangman is literally if young Iceman and young Mav somehow had a son
He really is. His name is similar to Iceman’s but he’s got young Mavericks attitude and personality. He’s cocky and reckless. Just like the first movie in the end, Maverick got held back from the mission, just like Hangman. But they both came in at the end to save the day. I thought that was a cool parallel.
Your two sets of balls are writing paternity checks that the navy will be barely able to cash… should you accept this iceman will not live long………

Rooster: Hey, Hangman! Lookin' good.

Hangman was basically young Maverick

Hangman needs his own movie.
He got one. It’s called Devotion.

you especially see it when he says to Rooster, "you give them hell". The arrogance, at that moment, is gone.

damn that tooth pick flipping skills though

I got a feeling that Hangman will be the next generation Top Gun, well-deserved, with that star power quality!

the way he smiles, such an asshole lmao i love dis dude
I love his character and I hope they keep him confident! I didn't say cocky or arrogant because he backs it up!

He's mean and competitive but he actually wanted Rooster to get his sh*t together. I guess that's what makes him a good antagonist
He's a reincarnation of Iceman.. 😎 The Best of The Best.
Hangman is just soo cocky but I love it 😂😂
I think this dude can play great Johnny Storm. If you know the character, than you why.
So it never crossed the mind of Admiral Simpson to have some of those Top Gun pilots standing by in F-35's to provided air cover for the returning planes.
Explanation for the non - use of the F35s is conveniently given in the first act of TG2. Probably would apply here too...
F-35s could've at least provided the Air Defence Cover to the striking F-18s.
Thank you for this! You did a good job. Love this character!
ofc!! too many scenepacks out there that dont have all his scenes and when i edit i like options so i wanted this to have options for everyone
