    Edgar Allen Poe was surrounded by entertainers during his life . Which had a very strong influence on him along with his extensive education into the arts . Plus the many losses he suffered is a very strong combination . Which was the Pinnacle of his work . He was a misunderstood genius as genius's usually are . I really like his work . He was very deep , profound , and spiritual who had much sorrow . Which is what I see in Poe's work more so than the horror .

      very well said , I relate to the pain when I lost my parents also I suffered depression in a upung age. I had been misunderstood by my own family. Is so sad that Poe argued so much with his step that ! Why is it do hard love as hymans ! Thats all we need however of this bad relationdhip wirh his dad not everything was bad because he was the master of the macab and an inspiration for many many readers!

    I am Brazilian and a lover of Poe's work. The more I study it, the more fascinated I become and the more I recognize its influence on modern horror stories.

    I'll always love his unreliable narrators in his stories. You never quite know what's true, and have to read between the lines yourself and it's fantastic.

    A somber, slower speaking narrator would have been so much better. It would have helped the quality and would have set the tone.

    What a annoying documentary, full of irrelevant stuff from Charlie Chaplin, Laurel and Hardy and Braveheart. The patronising narrator sounds like he's aiming at young teenagers as an audience. That's no excuse; teenagers don't want to be talked down to.

  • @OldSchoolFilm1930
    @OldSchoolFilm1930 3 роки тому +7

    I strongly disagree with the assumtions.
    Edgar Allan Poe wrote comedy not horror and he is all about perspective! Perspective is his MAIN theme throughout his whole body of work.
    And he used this perspective to make fun of everything that is human and even predicting future special effects in film -> forground miniatures. In the story "Goldbug" he pretends to write a "horror" story while in fact making fun of a focussing flaw of the human eye. This flaw is later used by film industry. When a tiny object is very close to one eye this eye may focus on the object while the other eye is focusing the background and our brain puts these two levels together as one -> forground miniature.
    In the story "Dr. Taar and Prof. Feather" A.E.Poe even puts the punchline at the beginning of the story making fun of everyone who gets distracted by the madness unfolding and we haven't even talkied about "The Scyth of Time" .... laughed my ass of reading.
    But besides comedy Poes other two strong motives are guilt and sorrow.

    Well at least they mention his marriage to his 1st cousin, a 13 year girl. Nicely glossing over this fact & his abuse of alcohol & opium . This is a dreadful bio; barely palatable for 9 year olds. This informs us little about the Poe. This is just weak as water.
