That 20,000 number makes a lot of sense actually. In Pittsburgh, the population is like 300,000 and the jail has a daily pop of 2,200. NYC's pop. of about 8 million has a jail with 20,000. In terms of scale, that would mean Pittsburgh would have a jail pop. of about 57,000 if it were the size of NYC.

word for word Fred is in point, everone in NY back then was trying to get locked up, we was all going to war, including myself, i thank God All Mighty that this wasn't my life , farthest i went was central bookings and that was crazzzzy in its self, kids younger than me was wildin crazzzy too, gang culture was just being established and it was heavy and rampant wild violence, Im Muslim and the violence on innocent people was against my teachings and religion and so I never joined any gangs

Rikers island is the hardest jail in America I did time all over and Rikers is by far the craziest jail you have over 15000 inmates from Queens Brooklyn Bronx Staten Island & Manhattan
All the men in my family did time in prison going generations back I've been to jail but not prison and thankful for it 🙏 now I'm making sure my son doesn't even go to jail he's 14 now I think back to when I was his age and man I'm thankful he isn't into anything that got to do with the streets 💯

I’m only in my mid-late 30s but even here in my small Mississippi town the crime rate in the late 80s and 90s was way worse than it is today. I can still remember how I’d watch about all the murders in NYC on the national news back in the day.
But that’s crazy 23,000 in there on average. That’s pretty much an entire city in some states.

I wonder what his upbringing was like.. Did he have a good solid family that he chose the ignore and go down the wrong path or did he grow up with a single mom/dad that was struggling and he had no real chance or options but to go down that path? I know Josh talks a lot about his childhood and that he had a solid family foundation so it was not really a path his family expected for him.
