USSR collapsed because successors criticised the predecessors. That is no way of introducing reforms. The Sino-Soviet Split came about exactly for the same reasons. Mao did not appreciate Khruschev's criticism of Stalin.
Eastern Europe is a large area with a lot of different countries, cultures and religions. To say that there's gona be some tensions in such an area, in any given date ( let alone the break-up of communism) I mean you don't have to clairvoyant. Nobody from the West took Yugoslavia's problem seriously, they just wanted stability and supported whoever was strongest, in that time Serbs led by Milošević. their response reminds me of the response the West has towards Arab Spring
Because he looks at any situation from a historical context. 3 milions of Hungarians in Transilvania might seem a large isue that might result with a ethnic tension. from his perspective.those nations were greater than those who lived in ex yugoslavia. and could cause more problems. But a historian can not predict future, that is not his job
***** Certainly Sir. Michael Howard's sexual orientation has no bearing on his ability as a scholar of history. I simply wanted to know if this were true or not seeing one cannot trust the accuracy of Wikipedia. Since many are publicly coming out of the closet with their gay, lesbian, or bisexual orientation I do not think it an improper question to ask who is gay seeing many, and maybe even most in contemporary society believe one should be proud of who they are no matter straight or gay. If one really believes this there is no wrong in asking whether a person is gay, lesbian, bisexual, or heterosexual. But, as I first stated, this has no bearing on his scholarship, and I will continue to read his books and articles, especially those who involve the history of The Great War.
My God how wrong he was! He said that the biggest "ethnic tension" problem in eastern Europe was between Hungary and Romania, he didn't even mention Yugoslavia :) Already in 1990 there where some major ethnic problems in Kosovo and Croatia, it then spread to Bosnia. Result 200.000 people dead and a couple of millions refugees. Historians are always wrong in predicting the future
16:55 The West failed in listening to a piece of advice from Sir Michael Howard, "the Soviet Union (Russia) cannot simply be neglected now..."
Did you not realize how RIGHT he was in mentionig ethinic tension well before they exploded in the 90s?
The video/interview is from 1990.

Noone has a crystal ball... I think he was wounded in Italy (Monte Cassino) and was highly decorated. Like he said, history can't predict the future.
History is not for “predicting “the future, it should be instrumental in avoiding repeating certain mistakes.
