UPDATE: 9. It was NINE 👏 DIFFERENT 👏MEN i kissed onstage before I had my first real kiss !!! (and I played opposite a few of those guys multiple times !)
Katherine Steele can you do Anna from Frozen the musical? I know she’s a “Disney Princess” and all but her character dive is really interesting (or at least how I interpret it) I got Anna in a summer camp and I’d love to see how you intupert her, also I’ll need a makeup tutorial😂
ok you have invited me to RANT so i have to take it. so what i love about the musical is the depth they give fiona. in the movies they show how she had been thinking about her “prince charming” but in the musical, it shows how she was pushed into them all ending up, after all the bad things (ex. snow white had been in a glass box, but ended up with her prince charming.) fiona, because she had been pushed into this role her whole life, and had no one to talk to do, she had read every single story. they’re all the same. i like to think ( and whenever i perform i know it’s today) in i know it’s today that at the beginning of the song, because she’s just a little kid, only having been there for 23 days, she is just happy to think about her not having to be this weird green thing for forever. but over time she starts to lose hope. when it says “though i act a bit bipolar. this whole time, she has been pushing her self into a role. she thinks that she has to be this onginue (lol how do you spell that) that every single other princess has to be, and is. but once she’s older. she rips the book. she starts to realize that she may never find her “prince charming” and she has never been this role. even in the second movie, her parents seem to have pushed her into this “oh everything is gorgeous and birds come and sit on my hand and they sing with me.” fiona has been “oh what a beautiful morn- HEY LEAVE ME ALONE (proceeds to hit the bird and makes it fall down the whole tower)” once she finds shrek. she found someone who knows what it’s like, in a different way. she didn’t have to play a part around him. even though he isn’t the classic “handsome charming, well, prince charming”, shrek was *HER* prince charming. WOW OK I LITERALLY RANTEDDDDD BUT I WAS ALSO GONNA SAY THAT I DIDNT LIKE IT SOMETIMES CAUSE IT WASNT MIKE MYERS AND EDDIE MURPHY BUT MY MUSICAL THEATRE KID IS SHOWING SO WOWWWW
Your talk of casting affecting your view of yourself (especially as a teen) really hits home! I spent all my years in youth theatre being cast as boys cause I was tall and skinny and we had a shortage boys to work with (tale as old as time). Post-puberty though, I had a lot of hang-ups about wanting roles that were feminine, likeable, and romantic. All the things I didn't think I was good enough at being in real life. It wasn't til honestly my 20's that I became genuinely cool with being cast in a larger variety, leaning into comedy that compromises lady-like-ness, and more unflattering costumes too! Growth!
I definitely think that Shrek is a hidden gem. I think that a lot of people might not give Shrek: The Musical a Chance because they think it’s going to be stupid, but it’s so much more than fart jokes. They develop those characters so freaking beautifully, and the message is amazing! In fact, when I first watched the stage adaptation on Netflix, I literally cried during freak flag because I thought that the amount of acceptance and positivity on stage was beautiful. I think that when people can fully accept themselves as they are, I think that the world inherently becomes more beautiful! Shrek was the musical that made me fall back in love with theatre, and ever since, I’ve done at least one show a year. I think that Shrek is one of the better movie-musicals out there, definitely up there with Legally Blonde, which kind of has a similar message; that your worth is more than just how you look. I’m a sucker for an acceptance story. And I agree, Fiona definitely is hiding behind the princess trope in that she tries so hard to be something that she is not. When she finally comes into her own and accepts that she’s more than just a princess, that’s when she finds love for herself and from Shrek. Fiona is a BIG dream role for me. I think that behind Fiona’s princess facade is vulnerability, anxiety, depression, self deprecation, low self-esteem. She’s a mess of contradictions in a dress, and she becomes whole when she finally accepts that.
This brought back flashbacks to when I played Fiona and our costumer was adding more green eyeshadow to my eyes and a deeper lip to vamp up my look as I had like 15 seconds to be onstage. Fun times.
Love this video ❤❤❤ Can you do a Christine Daaé tutorial/character study??? Edit: I know she already did a Christine makeup video, but that's more of a makeup challenge and not really a legit tutorial/character study and I would love to see her interpretation of the role! Edit: also I would love to see a skincare routine video!!!
I little late watching this video but I really enjoyed it. I relate to this so much. I was bullied horribly in middle and high school. I still struggle with being very shy and reserved around people as a result. Even people I know well and trust I have difficulty being completely open and emotionally vulnerable around them. I love musical theatre and it would be the ultimate dream come true to be in a show, any show.
Just found your channels. I have an 11 year old daughter who is a ballet major at our performing arts school and who has danced competitively for the last five years. She will pick up voice as her minor next year and is taking a “triple threat” elective that teaches audition skills for dance voice and drama. She will be dancing as the Evil Queen in our Ballet Under the Stars production. We took the tip about the clear mascara to lock in the brows. Love it! I am her hair and make up back up so I really like it when I can bring a new tip to her. Thanks for being a positive role model! Look forward to taking Broadway and then the World with the new fam! 😄
Hi! I first watched this video as someone who played ensemble roles, and hoped I’d get to play fiona whenever I got the chance. I watched this video, and everything you said stuck with me and still does. I am currently playing fiona in my hometowns production of shrek, and I just wanna say thank you for the help!💚
Omg this looks so cool!!! I love the makeup videos! Shrek was the first musical I ever really got into. I have the dvd of the pro shoot. When I was about 6, I watched it over 30 times on a 5 day trip to Florida to visit my grandparents. I sat by the pool, in the shade, with my DVD player and headphones. Shrek the Musical will always have a very special place in my heart. Without it, I wouldn’t have gotten into musical theatre. I’ve used songs from the show in many auditions when I was younger. It really changed my life in so many ways. I think that it’s appreciated enough. Shrek deserves more attention. I love you and this channel so much!!! Xoxo
i absolutely LOVE these videos! could we maybe get a eurydice look? her vibe is absolutely amazing and would love to see you tackle the themes of the show in depth
I played Gingy/Sugar Plum Fairy in Shrek straight off the heels of playing Audrey in Little Shop of Horrors...a role I almost didn't even audition for because I was convinved I was too unattractive after battling an eating disorder and being shamed for my appearance. Needless to say, belting "Freak Flag" was SO EMPOWERING,
Thank you for sharing that story about how you got casted in this particular musical. How you planed and dreamed of on me thing, but life had a away of saying, no not now. Life is funny like that sometimes. We don’t always know why things happen the way they do, but it usually makes sense in the long run.
Literally it's so strange like when I did seussical you posted a Mayzie look, when I did Grease you posted and Sandy look and now I'm doing Shrek and you post this It's like you're a physic😂
There is a deeper meaning to this musical. It’s about being different and it’s OK to be different one of my favorite lines from the freak flag is “what makes us special makes a strong”
Love this tutorial, as well as your personal story you shared. It so easy to feel like you’re not enough, especially for what your voice/casting types are. A local theatre is doing Shrek next year and Fiona is ideal for my voice, but I’m afraid I won’t get it because I’m plus sized and taller than most princesses, but you’ve encouraged me to try because it’s not about looks that makes a princess!
I was always skeptical of shrek the musical because I just thought it would be this dumb childish musical but after I finally took a listen I was completely wrong it’s actually really good and some of my favorite songs come from it like “ I know it’s today”, “ who I’d be”, “ build a wall” and “ freak flag” and I actually shed a few tears while listening because it’s that good!
Tip for those who want to get this eyeshadow shape with tape....use medical tape, like the stuff you get in first aid kits!!! It’s designed to go on your skin and be easy to remove, I also notice less tugging on the delicate skin around my eyes when I use it 😘👌🏻
Alex The wolf 1010 they should be ok to use as they are already skin safe but I’m not sure how clean the lines will be, I think it would depend on whether you’re using plastic or fabric ones, you may also need to cut them down a little 😊
Please do more Bed Time Stories with Friends! Also can we get more videos with Kylie, or is she still at college?! You are the best, Cult Leader Kat!!❤
Damn Kat, I came here for a makeup tutorial and left with an inspirational pep talk. It would be cool if for your next tutorial you replicated a drag-style makeup look (like Lola in Kinky Boots or Hedwig in Hedwig and the Angry Inch) and talked about identity and acceptance and the show's impact on the LGBTQ community
I actually played Fiona about a month ago as one of my schools end-of-year productions was Shrek: The Musical. I think it’s a fun musical! It’s not one of my favorites, but I like it😄
I love this video so much. The breakdown of this musical was actually really good and as usual, the makeup was gorgeous 💛 also, you should totally do a skincare routine!
Katherine Steele yay! i’m auditioning for ariel for my school’s next musical and i really wanna delve into her character and your character tutorial videos always help me with that!
I did Shrek a while back, I think I was about 13. I played one of the pigs. It was a fun show, but definitely one of my least favorite I've done. And before you jump down my throat, I don't hate the musical or anything. It was just the circumstances under which we performed it. We were a bunch of rowdy middle schoolers, and so the show ended up being really messy. The guy playing Shrek had been a bully of mine for a while. It was just generally not a great time. But I think some of the music is actually quite solid, I think, especially I Know It's Today
IM SO EXCITED THIS IS BACK!!!! what I love about this is that it's not only a CHARACTER makeup tutorial (which is already AWESOME) it's also a really deep analysis on the character
This is, hands down, my favourite of all your videos. I have been watching your both your channels for a while, but what you said about us theatre kids is so important. I have been "in the business" for a long time. I not only perform, I also teach. Reminding kids to not give up "that thing that makes us special" is such an important lesson. Thank you for sharing it with your audience because I truly believe "what makes us special, makes us strong."
PS I grew up in Woodland Hills and did some shows with Cabrillo in Thousand Oaks, so I always get a kick out of mentions of that region! Currently living and working way up in Montreal!
i loooooove these videos! they’re so interesting and fun and helpful! i’d love to see your look and analysis for audrey from little shop of horrors :))
I really enjoy Shrek the musical. It's easy to hate it just because it's Shrek, but it has some really great songs! I love "I Know it's Today," "Who I'd Be" and "Freak Flag!" (P.S. I was Teen Fiona and Pig 1 in my production)
I absolutely ADORE Shrek! It was my first show and what got me into theatre. I love the songs, the messages, the humor, it’s all amazing! Plus, I’m always in for a good old fashion fairy tale! When I did this show I got to be part of the fairy tale characters as Alice (in Wonderland) and she was who I looked up to growing up. Her, along with Wendy and Dorothy. It meant so much to me to play that character and a few years later, I got to portray Alice in her own show! I will always be in gratitude to Shrek for giving me the theatre bug and teaching me that it’s not about being perfect-it’s about being you!
i love shrek! i was in it last year as the dragon and i love every second of it. there’s definitely a deeper meaning about accepting yourself and loving who you are!
Your point about being extra or “too much” honestly almost made me cry. Throughout my entire life, I’ve been “too much”. I have ADD, and when I was younger, people were mean. I did crazy things and had wild ideas and maybe sometimes I was a lot to handle- but even my friends made me feel bad for being different and creative. So, I changed. Suddenly I cared what people thought. I was scared to do anything that was against the rules or outside of the norm. To this day, I find it hard to let loose. I have a constant fear of messing up or having people think I’m “too much”. It even makes theater hard for me because I’m afraid to take risks. But being on the stage and being with people who are the same way as me is really the best. When I’m a character and I’m surrounded by similar energies, I am proud of who I am. Freak Flag has been an important number to me for so long and your analysis really rang true to me. Anyways, I loved this video so much, and your makeup looks amazing! I was in Shrek in 8th grade and it was a really fun show for me!
Preach it sister! I've had this video in my Watch Later for a while and holy moly, I was not ready for all the feels that you brought to the surface for me today... Listening to you talk about being the girl that no one crushed on and feeling inadequate and embarrassed and teased for doing what I loved and openly pursuing what I loved and wanted (both in theatre and academically) I just... I needed to hear this today, even 6 years after I've finished high school. So much love for you and the Theatre Thursday Fam! Fun fact, currently working on a local amateur theatre production after not being able to be on stage for the last 4 years. I'm ridiculously excited! But thank you for keeping the musical theatre love alive while I've been dying inside because I haven't been on stage!
I like Shrek! Both musical and movie. I think the deeper meaning behind Shrek is that don’t judge someone by who they are. Fiona when you first see her, you think that she’s a damsel in destress-which she is-but then you see that she isn’t, she’s a feisty red head and she kicks butt, so when you see her turn into an Ogre like Shrek she is something more, kinda like onions. Ogres have layers! Shrek the musical and movie have something deeper and that’s beauty is in the inside and outside, you don’t have to be the Instagram beauty to show who you truly are, just be yourself! I love Shrek and both movie and musical showed me I can let my freak flag fly high in the sky and don’t give a damn about what anyone says. I love Fiona and I’m happy you did a tutorial on her. Please do more tutorials!
I'm so excited! Your channel is such a big help! I'm in a play, in which I am a stuffed lamb/blanket that comes to life. She is always positive and peppy :) I watched your video about types, and I found that I can play either REALLY happy characters, or REALLY bad/evil characters.
i love the extra makeup look for fiona! i'd like to think while she was bored waiting in the castle, she practiced makeup looks on herself so she'd always look glam in case a prince showed up.

Thanks for making me cry. Love your message about freak flag flying. I wish I had that message as a theater kid.
I just 2 + 2 together! Fiona's dress is green, because she turns into a GREEN ogre by sunset! Ding! Ding! Ding! Ding! Ding!
you should definitely do an Ariel tutorial with that wig!
😉 might have one coming out reeeeeeal soon
Katherine Steele yay! i’m auditioning for ariel for my school’s next musical and i really wanna delve into her character and your character tutorial videos always help me with that!
Yes! Skin Care Routine PLEASE!!
Could you do Mrs. Lovett from Sweeney Todd for your next makeup look?
PLEASE!!! I love Mrs.Lovett!!!!😂
Yaas!! I’d love that!
But I think some of the music is actually quite solid, I think, especially I Know It's Today
i would VERY MUCH like to see lydia from beetlejuice
My first musical production this year (9th grade) was shrek the musical and I played the dragon/three blind mice! So we stan shrek lol
IM SO EXCITED THIS IS BACK!!!! what I love about this is that it's not only a CHARACTER makeup tutorial (which is already AWESOME) it's also a really deep analysis on the character
I love Shrek the Musical! Fiona is one of my biggest dream roles! 💚
Good job Kath!! Love that you are bringing back the character tutorials!
Omg, I have the same palette😂😂😂
Also could we get a Eurydice or Persephone from Hadestown one day?!?!
I really enjoy Shrek the musical. It's easy to hate it just because it's Shrek, but it has some really great songs! I love "I Know it's Today," "Who I'd Be" and "Freak Flag!"
My aunts is playing Fiona in a production in wales
I’ll make sure to show this to her!!!!
Girl!!! Can you maybe do a skin routine on your second channel or something? Your skin looks AMAZING!!
I would love to see her do a character tutorial of Cosette! Btw, Kath, you’re so freaking beautiful! ❤️
I want to know HOW THE HECK they got Sutton's ogre makeup on so fast!?!?
i love shrek! i was in it last year as the dragon and i love every second of it. there’s definitely a deeper meaning about accepting yourself and loving who you are!
The number of time she says cult multiplies every video😂
SKIN CARE ROUTINE! UR GLOWING!😭😱😘
Okay, but like I love the fact that the green eyeshadow hardcore brings out your eyes!! I'm obsessed! This eye look is BEAUTIFUL.
i love the extra makeup look for fiona! i'd like to think while she was bored waiting in the castle, she practiced makeup looks on herself so she'd always look glam in case a prince showed up.
