One thing that really upsets me is that this is suppose to be a deck building game but on Arena ALL the cards are behind a paywall even for all the common and uncommon. I haven't played a lot of different card games and I am trying to learn the different ratios between removal, ramp, creatures, etc... for the different archetypes but you only get to build one or two decks and if those dont work out, you are SOL. It is so frustrating.
While I think a longer rotation is a good thing in theory, the length of a rotation doesn't matter all that much if the card pool is unbalanced. So, I just see this as a lateral change. It went from bad to still bad.

You might be able to argue that the existence of X will keep K in line, but that's the cockamamie logic that WOTC already used to excuse the lack of bans. So now instead of Scute Swarm, Ajani's Pridemate x10 and (Insert Control Deck Here), we have to contend with all those plus any other ridiculous things that will be printed over the course of an additional year. This change is freakishly asinine, they may as well nuke standard and just make Pioneer the "Standard" format, as the effectively reintroduced Extended back into the system, after they explicitly removed it because it had balance, longevity and attendance issues.
I used to be a die hard mtg fan and spent thousands on the game. I quit when ikora companion invaded modern. I was even like you can came up with stuff that dominated my FNM against all the net deckers, but I got so sick of everything happening in the game I sold off my collection. I even stopped going to my LGS's casual commander night because I was so sick of everything this company did to this game and their social policies. I drop in to watch you every once in awhile to see if the game is improved and all I am seeing is making me think I made a good decision getting out when I did.
My LGS probably won't bring back Standard ever, changes or not. Everyone mainly does draft. I can see what you mean with mentioning the seating advantage with drafts, which is why my LGS actually randomizes the seats at the table before the draft begins, to avoid any advantage.
Yeah the second I saw this announcement I was thinking “Oh Des’s video on this is going to be priceless.” I’m grabbing the Walmart donuts, the next 41 minutes are going to be a real treat.
Imagine what Standard would look like if we already had a 3 year rotation, combined with the 'never ban anything' policy. Oko would still be legal in Standard today.
This is exactly what I predicted they were going to do. Everything over the past 4 years points to this: Dropping 3 set blocks Pushed power sets. Ridiculous ban decisions. Decreasing player base. A "Flash Point" DC-esq story and set. They can't balance their game anymore, because the power is far too pushed and concentrated. Entire archetypes are now just one or two insane cards, with the rest of the deck being support or enablement. They refuse to ban anything, because they've designed themselves into a catch 22 with these power pushes: If we ban X, K comes back, which suppresses L, which is suppressing X, which is suppressing K and everyone hates K, L and X, but everyone is playing K, L and X. Since only those with a fat wallet and 0 brain cells can reasonably enjoy this game at this point, people are leaving constantly and when they come back, half their card pool is useless and they don't have the time, money or will to rebuild their collections. The only option then is to "remake" the game, by fundamentally changing design and retaining the option for returning players. The only way to do redo design, is to remake the format design is centered around, which allows them to slowly spread power across sets and micromanage the meta without bans, instead of jam packing into mechanics into one set, with one or two "break the game to enable a mechanic" cards. However, while all this sounds great, the fucking fact of the matter is, had WOTC just kept to 3 set blocks, solid mechanics over 3 sets and shortened the rotation period, all of this would have been unnecessary, as they wouldn't have fucked the game or their playbase for 4 straight years.
My next prediction, because they had to complete gut Planeswalkers and force a deus machina just to allow organic material to travel through the planes, is that future sets were include Multi-plane visitations. This would explain why they needed to lore wise create Omenpaths between Planes, in order to allow nonplaneswalkers to travel and therefore "allow" extra-planar conflicts. This let's them do things like have a Ravnica-Meets-Capaena set, so they can create some kind of wack "base mechanic" and then have a Ravnican and Cappenan variant/play off the two, without having to specifically design another "Do something, put a +1/+1 counter on something" mechanic that'll be parasitic and drop off the planet, without engineering the perfect card once again to supercharge the archetype and completely ruin the math of everything that came before it.
Lengthening the standard cycle could have been fine iff they added some kind of restriction along with it. For instance, limiting the number of sets the cards are from. Like sets would be legal for 3 years, but you can only use cards from 3 different ones. That way you don't just have the best of cards in a standard cycle all coming together like mono black currently or the best of control cards making a deck that prevents anyone else from playing the game. But when was the last time wizards had done something that deescalated the power level
I feel like when the format is bloated its massively at its worst. I remember when it was Kahns block, magic orgins, BFZ in standard and hated life because of the massive card pool + 4 color decks between abzan red or jeskai black were the only thing to play. was glad when Khans block was fully out. I feel like singular sets they just dont care about the health of the format. since that happened I just switched to modern, legacy and commander cause standard is just so bad.
I had an ad it was for a mobile game ad that a guy acting like an Italian tough guy talking to his wife which is just the same guy in a wig and I just imagine that's what Pinkertons talked like .
MTG's success came directly from that fact the player base actively went out and taught the game to friends and family, and WOTC worked to propagate that good will. Now they are just a spoiled rich kid who inherited a legacy they could never hope to comprehend.

I just find it funny that all the current thriving MTG formats in most LGS, are the "community-mediated" ones (unsanctionned formats), such as commander, Legacy and Premodern.
they're literally taking away what I was paying for. the only money I ever spent was for new cards i played standard to experience new cards, new decks, and new strategies, now it's going to be bogged down by old cards. if i want to play older cards, i'lll play older formats
I mean, if they wanted a really, really, really good way to poll their players, they could do it through their own player Database. They could then filter the results to look at data sets of whatever quality they want. They can filter by people who are actively playing in official tournaments in stores. Or are active on arena. Or used to be active on arena, or standard in person before covid. Or just modern players (as they have a record of which players have played modern (or any other format)), or whatever. Grand Wizards of the Coast are just pure incompetence.
My LGS stopped hosting standard. Everyone plays Pioneer and the format is robust at the store. When you ask around the store, everyone hate standard because You can’t keep track of the board state anymore . This slowdown the game so you can’t get more than 2 games in.

As someone from the yugioh community i would argue that net decking is alot of the times the only way to find the cards that synergies due to card bloat. But i play commander and my pod is kinda crazy lol.
Things that could have been done: max counters per deck is 1 per 10 cards in deck (meaningful counters only, not counter-spam), max 4 planeswalkers per deck, stop love-affair with blue and try to make all colors equal at table... and finally: EVERYTHING has an answer. Do things like False Cure for life-link lovers, etc. If everything has a viable answer, things get flattened.
Ah, but that would mean introducing actual hard and fast rules for deckbuilding. This in turn would actually place hard limits on card design. Not going to shift pallet-loads of paper product to the investors and speculators by printing broken, all-in-one answer cards if everyone know there's going to be a limit to just how powerful your busted-ass card is going to be.
You don't even have to do any of that lol You literally just have to reprint cavern of souls and counterspell decks go from being really good to really trash really fast But then that creates a big problem of combo decks or I'm going to cast my 15/15 annihilator 600 I win card and it's going to resolve and you're going to lose because now interaction is useless
I think this is start of the competitive mtg fix. First change Standard to be Extended version 2, then in 1-2 years make a new standard that is shorter then the old one.
I would, and have, introduce people to MtG with Commander. I have a few relatively simple but pretty strong decks that I can use to teach people how to play. My Syr Gwyn deck focuses on Knight Tribal and Equipment, and has a decent amount of options to interact with the opponent, but it doesn't have anything too complicated. The friend I lent it to swept the table while still learning the game and asking the right questions. Commander doesn't have to be extremely complicated... especially the people at the table are on board with taking it a little easier on the newbie who has training wheels on. Also, you DO have ads on this video XD
My problem is, that standard has too many expansions that are too quick rotating out. There are too many sets in one year. I want to play longer with my cards, and so standard is simple not a good choice for me.

Kind of over the artificial flavour of MTGA. Lately it seems I struggle to get a good curve to play, finally claw my way to the point where I actually have a workable board state, then, surprise, surprise, my opponent suddenly starts top-decking every bomb-answer he needs to win the game. And every time, I walk away wondering how this game, which is obviously built for fat-dumb-happy casual play, is supposedly a game of skill. I kind of feel that it's a meme on the old "In Soviet Russia..." jokes. So, based on my experience, yes, mid range will struggle in MTGA, however they'll keep tweaking the code to draw out the tension. Don't be at all surprised if you see the day where red rush decks suddenly start grinding to a halt if the algorithm detects too much difference in the ratio between players life totals and number of turns the game has elapsed.
So we have a higher volume of sets than ever AND we're tossing three year rotations on top of that. I mean, modern is my format, so idgaf... but f*** that. They've lost their god damn minds.
In all seriousness standard needs to be split into 2 formats 1) would be a high powered . Pretty much what it is now . For pro tournaments and net Deckers 2) far lower powered more fun and casual . That can be played at FNM All they need to do is as new sets come out just say bam here is a list of cards banned day one from the low powered format but they are still legal in pro tournament format
I enjoy the rotation change, but only because I solely experiance standard via standard brawl in Arena, and I have a hate boner against the rotation specifically because of how many of my decks have rotated out. That said, I also hate a ton of recently released commanders and now I'll have to wait longer for them to rotate out.
I've been playing since 1997. I haven't bought any WOTC product in 2 or 3 years. I have never, not even once, attended an FNM. I've only been to 6 or 7 pre-release events. Kitchen table is the only way to go, and fk that EDH/Commander; I don't touch the format.
i play, massive land destruction and turbo mill and combo and control but i also play normal fun decks it depends on the level we are playing we joust have to ask to the rest of the players and teach the new ones to play more
Is any one at wizards doing anything good ? DND is on fire and the next edition is starting to look like a half baked pile. Magic is cluster in all but two or three formats. Is there anything else from them that they haven't dragged through the mud?
If they want standard to be cheaper, they should ban cards every month on availability. Card going over a few dollars on the secondary market? Ban for at least one year or the cards drops under a dollar for at least 6 months.
Shit metric to ban over Cityscape leveler isn't expensive because it's oppressive in standard. It's expensive because it's oppressive as a karn creator sideboard grab in Tron decks for a instant blood moon destroyer in a 8/8 trample body Standard has very little to do with pricing on these cards, modern commander and even legacy effect prices more sharply
They are insane. Players just want games to be short, so they dont have to pour too much time into arenas addiction driven 'engagement' raising daily/season pass mechanic bs, to get cards so they can build decks they enjo. Btw. Alchemy (the format no one wants because of the ingame card altering/tutor nonsense that upped the power lvl, not to mention the lies about altering under/over perfoming cards or general curating it) is keeping the two year rotation ... All that is needed is a propper (not rigged) match making so that players with less powerfull jankier decks can find each other and have more fun. And more reasonable cards, ofc. this wont be happening with their 'all is for commander players' attitude. The whole thing is just messed up. I did a break from the game because of how things played out with crimson vow and them pushing too much shit into the game in a too short amount to stomach. Came back to Brothers War, enjoyed it and was really looking forward to the next rotation and our return to eldraine and now THIS. What a fucking joke. Edit: i am an Arena only player.

..... really really really simple way to fix standard.....go back to block constructed rotation 2 small sets one large set followed by a reprint set that holds the hosers for the previos sets to keep things in check as well as hosers for the following set and then bam things would be as they were intended to be.....smh 😞

Thalia tends to be a fairly balanced card, as it's not discriminatory between the players.

Lately it seems I struggle to get a good curve to play, finally claw my way to the point where I actually have a workable board state, then, surprise, surprise, my opponent suddenly starts top-decking every bomb-answer he needs to win the game. And every time, I walk away wondering how this game, which is obviously built for fat-dumb-happy casual play, is supposedly a game of skill. I kind of feel that it's a meme on the old "In Soviet Russia..." jokes. So, based on my experience, yes, mid range will struggle in MTGA, however they'll keep tweaking the code to draw out the tension. Don't be at all surprised if you see the day where red rush decks suddenly start grinding to a halt if the algorithm detects too much difference in the ratio between players life totals and number of turns the game has elapsed.
Less midrange is a necessity. The midrange meta is insane rn. 6/8 protour decks were rakdos midrange
So we have a higher volume of sets than ever AND we're tossing three year rotations on top of that.
I mean, modern is my format, so idgaf... but f*** that. They've lost their god damn minds.

In all seriousness standard needs to be split into 2 formats
1) would be a high powered . Pretty much what it is now . For pro tournaments and net Deckers
2) far lower powered more fun and casual . That can be played at FNM
All they need to do is as new sets come out just say bam here is a list of cards banned day one from the low powered format but they are still legal in pro tournament format
I enjoy the rotation change, but only because I solely experiance standard via standard brawl in Arena, and I have a hate boner against the rotation specifically because of how many of my decks have rotated out.
That said, I also hate a ton of recently released commanders and now I'll have to wait longer for them to rotate out.
I've been playing since 1997. I haven't bought any WOTC product in 2 or 3 years. I have never, not even once, attended an FNM. I've only been to 6 or 7 pre-release events. Kitchen table is the only way to go, and fk that EDH/Commander; I don't touch the format.
i play, massive land destruction and turbo mill and combo and control but i also play normal fun decks it depends on the level we are playing we joust have to ask to the rest of the players and teach the new ones to play more
I like jank, my current standard favorite is white/green splash red. It's a lot of fun.

I stopped playing MTG because of everything you pointed out and started playing flesh and blood. The game has a better flow and the lore is fantastic!
Only thing I can guess about the alchemy weirdness is they are going to drop support for it.
Is any one at wizards doing anything good ? DND is on fire and the next edition is starting to look like a half baked pile. Magic is cluster in all but two or three formats. Is there anything else from them that they haven't dragged through the mud?

Apparently my suggestion of a restriction list feel on deaf ears around the fireside.
If they want standard to be cheaper, they should ban cards every month on availability. Card going over a few dollars on the secondary market? Ban for at least one year or the cards drops under a dollar for at least 6 months.

Standard has very little to do with pricing on these cards, modern commander and even legacy effect prices more sharply

Players just want games to be short, so they dont have to pour too much time into arenas addiction driven 'engagement' raising daily/season pass mechanic bs, to get cards so they can build decks they enjo.
Btw. Alchemy (the format no one wants because of the ingame card altering/tutor nonsense that upped the power lvl, not to mention the lies about altering under/over perfoming cards or general curating it) is keeping the two year rotation ...
All that is needed is a propper (not rigged) match making so that players with less powerfull jankier decks can find each other and have more fun. And more reasonable cards, ofc. this wont be happening with their 'all is for commander players' attitude.
The whole thing is just messed up.
I did a break from the game because of how things played out with crimson vow and them pushing too much shit into the game in a too short amount to stomach. Came back to Brothers War, enjoyed it and was really looking forward to the next rotation and our return to eldraine and now THIS. What a fucking joke.

I don't play Arena because it is rigged and doesn't let you play your deck. If it wants you to lose, you lose.

Ideally this would mean more deck variety but let's be real... It's just going to make games shorter or more toxic with the most busted cards in each set haha

One good thing with the power creep. All the old sets being added to arena. suck. So i do not need to worry about collecting those cards like innistrad remaster.

..... really really really simple way to fix standard.....go back to block constructed rotation 2 small sets one large set followed by a reprint set that holds the hosers for the previos sets to keep things in check as well as hosers for the following set and then bam things would be as they were intended to be.....smh 😞
