Urban is perfect proof of what I've heard Pat (and probably others) say about NFL vs college football. CFB is for developing boys into athletes. NFL is for upgrading great athletes into even better athletes. Not every player can handle the transition from college to the NFL, and not every coach can handle the shift in coaching styles that the NFL requires and I think that was quite apparent with him removing his best player after 1 fumble. You can do that in college and nobody bats an eye since the kid has to learn, but when you do that in the pros all it does is degrade that player.

The whole "Urban wasn't a good coach, just a good recruiter" is just knee-jerk reactionary revisionism. Urban was a fantastic coach in college. He's the originator of the modern spread option offense and took Bowling Green from 2-9 to 8-3 in his first year, was the original BCS buster with Utah, and took Ohio State from .500 to undefeated his first year and then won a title with a 3rd string QB.
He's definitely an asshole and a large part of his NFL failure was because of his personality and inability to adapt to the NFL, but his college coaching record (on the field, definitely not off) was impeccable before he got to Jacksonville.

Coach Saban is the perfect example that every coaching hire in the NFL needs to be a coach that has come up through or has always been in the NFL. Honestly, it not easy for a NFL coach to coach college either. Its two different worlds as far as the work goes.

    • @usernamesrlamo

The work isn’t that different, it’s the culture and mindset that’s so different. You are taking boys and making them into men in college. You are coaching grown ass men in the NFL. Most of the time when coaches don’t work out going back or forth, it’s because they fail to understand the difference in how to reach and relate to boys vs. men.

When they do a "30 For 30" on the Urban Meyer Era in Jacksonville, will they quote Pat McAfee to the effect that the moment where Meyer went too far was when when he kicked the kicker?? When he stayed behind in Ohio after that loss in the 4th game to just golf and party when other NFL head coaches week-in and week-out are working on little sleep to come up with a game plan, that goofing off said it all. You're in season and you're trying to turn around Jacksonville. You don't have time for this goofing off - wait until after the season which, since you're Jacksonville will end after Game 17 since there is no hope of the playoffs. Hard to believe that one Head Coach in such a short time could create so many problems. Don't know how good Trevor Lawrence will be but hopefully he gets better coaching, a better 'O' line, and some receivers to throw to.
