As I was listening to the talk I noticed something about the photo of the three soldiers saving the fourth from apparent drowning in the mud, that makes the photo even more meaningful. The three soldiers pulling the fourth out of the mud are obviously German soldiers. They are wearing the very distinctive helmets that German soldiers wore during WWI. But the fourth is wearing what appears to me to be a French army helmet. It is pretty distinct from the German helmets. The soldier being saved is actually the enemy of the soldiers who are saving him. That seems to speak even more powerfully how love can cross seemingly insurmountable divides.
Once again, Terryl Givens has absolutely deepened my desire to know God and to love like he does.
The church is the vessel, not the voyage. It's a beautiful tool for fostering connection and love, but the ultimate goal is that eternal sociality.
