William Jordison Flat head screwdriver. That's how I opened the 360 controller and just now an Xbox One controller. See the small pin in the middle of the screw? Break it or at least force it out of the way. The smaller screws inside don't have those pins so a precision screwdriver doed the trick. I've never had the required ones.
XxkingxX How much more detailed can I get? Flat head screwdriver, push the pin out of the way potentially breaking it and then you can open them easily.
Wow, so lazy. If you wanna spend money on a new controller go ahead, but they make the screws hidden on purpose cuz it looks ugly and amateur. It's a bit hard to take off, sure, but it's not impossible
tried to clean my buttons since they were sticky. came here, saw the secure torx screws, got upset, raged, checked my computer-dissamble scredriver set, found the correct heads, raged more that I even had to look for it, dissambled my controller, cleaned the buttons, put it back together and I am happy now. thanks for the video, take my like.
The tool that you can pry open the plastic panels is called a spudger. :) Very useful, especially for modding and repairing electronics, like controllers, cell phones, or tablets. Security TORX size T8 worked for me.
One of the most inexpensive tools for disassembly of electronics, is a good stiff guitar pick or an old expired credit card. The guitar picks are going to be the better of the two because of siffness/rigidity and they are relatively inexpensive.
Be aware that some models the bumbers are part of the centre piece, the centre power button cover and bumbers come off as one unit, bear that in mind when following this tutorial as you may snap them
Yes, for Gen 2 Controller the center and bumper piece is one unit but for if you have Gen 1 then all 3 shall be separate. P.S I have my Gen 1 controller open right in front of me for cleaning.
Thank you. My controller is having connection issues and I just wanted to make sure it wasn't a simple cleaning issue before trying to figure out technical issues or being charged an arm and a leg for repair/replacement. I'm 63 years old and your basic instruction for getting the grips off and removing the four (and a half) screws was perfect for checking it out. I had the right size tool to by pass the security screw and get it clean.
A quicker way to remove the bottom board, that I figured out on accident after almost breaking the controller, would be to remove to piece that has the Xbox logo in it. If you slide it up towards you while gripping the bottom probation, too slide right off so you don't have to use the screw driver. Thanks for a awesome video!
Most videos about this "and you simply pop of the back covers. Remember not to apply to Much pressure". - me trying to do it - breaks to screwdrivers and back covers is scared for life ...

If you have temperament nature or you just get it fixed fast then I don't recommend repairing this. I "repaired" mine, but when I assembled it back together the red wire of the smaller motor came off. I soldered the wire back to it's place but I got short-circuit. I couldn't figure out the reason for the short-circuit other than my soldering (I probably heated the spot too much). So I bought the new one... Lesson is put the tapes on the motors so they don't drop constantly and don't solder/remove the wires.

Opened her up, took the screw out, controller works fine again. My left analog stick feels like it's going to give out soon but you gave me some time before I buy a new one.
I took a really small flat head and broke off the small hole in the security head screw. Then was able to use the actual T9 screwdriver to take out the screws. Really easy. Thanks for the idea. I didn’t have to go out and buy a special screwdriver

My fiancè broke his Xbox controller and I had this energetic feeling to open it up, with your help I got it open and somehow even fixed his analog stick, I'm giving the credit to God on that one because I'd never even touched the inside of a controller. But the ONE screwdriver that was missing from the kit was the 3/64 (1.19mm). And the size above that (5/64) was barely not small enough. Please help!😭😣

+xXModdedWarfareXx my B button has stopped working.. could you do a tut on how to fix that please and maybe the usb thing at the bottom mine fell out :/
Did the steps in the video with a late model One controller and the thing basically exploded anyway, so the top comment is more accurate than humorous. Multiple pieces secured only by the unibody construction and basically impossible to figure out for someone not building it at the factory when something goes flying, and a high likelihood something broke. Thankfully I had a spare original model One controller with just a broken RB and I cannibalized the remains of the former for the latter, which I was shocked to discover was far more changed than I thought. At one point I thought they had only changed the cover of the RB/LB buttons to make it less likely to snap, but the whole thing comes apart almost entirely backwards, and actually reminds me much more of a Switch Pro than current XBox controllers, but even that claim is almost insulting to the Switch Pro. If you’ve never seen one disassembled, pull up a video. Literally any of the top 99.9 percent of reason people take these controllers apart can be done just by unscrewing the grip covers vs the annoying snap off ones that all XBox controllers since one have had, and the way it comes apart you immediately have access to all your buttons and thumbsticks for easy cleaning which is all my current endeavor was meant to do (had a sweaty coke from taco bell that dripped into the start button while playing witcher 3 and was preventing electrical connection which is a big no no for that game as you have to constantly and quickly pause to use things like oils). I’d have had a Switch Pro fixed in this same scenario within 15 minutes. As amazing as the Switch Pro is for consumer friendly repair, there was also really nothing that needed fixing with the 360 era controllers I’d also be using right now if I hadn’t misplaced my adapter, and only stopped using because official ones are impossible to find and the ones on Amazon require you to manually install the driver as windows doesn’t recognize it, then randomly loses connection one day and you end up with the driver saved to your desktop for the inevitable multi-weekly reinstall of the drivers to get it detecting the 360 controller again. So BAD Nintendo for not having real triggers, especially when the GCN introduced ones that set the stage for all modern ones whilst still being more advanced than any since. They were borderline PS5 style adaptive triggers. Switch Pro finally added L3 and R3 to the sticks, but the lack of analog triggers makes it unusable for a lot of games for me, when if it had them the rumble would be on par with PS5 at least and make it an easy #2 next to the DualSense. If the Switch 2 has a Pro 2 assembled like the Pro 1, but with an evolution of the HD rumble on par with the DS5, and adaptive triggers, it’ll be the best controller ever made as well as a Nintendo controller finally living up to the GCN standard again. And that in turn would mean an exodus of PC gamers like me to playing solely on Nintendo controllers, which would hopefully mean proper built in support like the XBox has had for 15 years, that Sony is slowly introducing, and which Nintendo has deserved for years as all the way back to the 2006 Wiimote no wireless Nintendo controller has had any issue interfacing with basic BT on any PC. XBox finally got there, but Sony still needs to get its act together and the proper drivers provided to MS update and Steam so that we don’t have to play wired to get all the DualSense features. Shew. That was a nice distraction for this nightmare. Just happy that the controller I’m fixing will actually be better going forward than the newer one I went in initially to fix. Even the snap off grip covers seemed to be way more easy to remove than the version 2 One controller and that’s despite those grips being warped as shit from how much force is needed to remove them. Fully expecting this controller to be way less wobbly/warped when put back together as a result. MS, Sony, Nintendo… Let’s all be friends and set some standards together. MS can push Windows support forward, Sony can share their expertise with the DualSense so far and help the other 2 implement their own version, Nintendo can be an example of how to assemble the components, and together they could all create a manifesto of controller standards for consumer friendly repair. Support people cleaning their controllers officially while you’re at it even if you still can’t (for understandable reasons) maintain warrantee support for things a user could have broken. If you make the steps to just do basic cleaning as easy as a Switch Pro, that won’t even be an issue anyhow.
Thanks for this vid. Had a family friend's child deposit some kid-goo into one of the buttons. The first few steps helped me open this up and clean it out. Saved me buying a new one.
I love you. I had this really bad upward drift in my right stick that made playing Apex Legends a nightmare when my crosshairs would just randomly move up not to mention looking with the scroll box. I was going to replace the right stick mechanism, but all I did was give it a good blow. Didn’t realize it was so dirty. Cat hair and dust. It fixed it. Make sure to clean all that crap out of there if you are suffering from drift.
My first UA-cam comment ever since yout6 was released or at least one of my very few- Thanks a lot Modded, I used this to take apart my controlled today to replace the left stick on my Battlefield 1 green edition unit, the grip had came off, I replaced both sticks with custom clear in 25 minutes with no prey tool, lookin sharp. +xXModdedWarfareXx Hey, what torx did you use to take off the eternal screws? not the first set, the 2nd and 3rd sets to actually have access to the led.
You say that, but our controllers actually last: My brother had a PS4 for at least 3 months, he broke 2; 1st was by throwing it at a wall (Not even that hard) 2nd was that one of the analog sticks completely broke. I've had an xbox one for 2 years, not a single breakage apart from some dirt and scratches now and then. But, I do agree on that PS4 controllers are easier to take apart than xbox controllers.
Broken Matt Hardy [#DELETE] Are you aware that you can just plug the xbox one controller into the xbox one without any batteries in it just using an android charger?

8:40 = Broken bumper. If you try and just wing this part as depicted; "pops right out!" It will almost surely break. Just a heads up, this part of video is lacking. Be careful.
If you get a small flathead screwdriver a 35-1301 from ideal tools, you can use that to undo the screws without breaking off the security tab in the middle

Instructions not clear, my controller went up in flames and so did my house now I’m claiming insurance
What shit hardware. You can tell they're profiting with their prices
Wtf, how do you get the one behind the battery area?! Do I seriously have to drill a tiny hole into my controller?
Its just a sticker covering the screw hole. Just force a screwdriver through the sticker and unscrew it.
Omg, thank you!! Thank god I didn't have to do that. I was about to give up on fixing it
nice my bumper broke 😒
Versatile 12D same
Same
Mines already broken so that's why I'm watching this video
my RB buttons keep breaking if i play games that use them too often
My LT is being constantly held down rip
What a time to be alive. Either endure the endless hackers/cheaters on pc or deal with nearly non self serviceable parts on console.
Thanks for this vid. Had a family friend's child deposit some kid-goo into one of the buttons. The first few steps helped me open this up and clean it out. Saved me buying a new one.
This video assumes I have fingers.
What else you got? Hooves?
I'm here because I broke my Xbox one controller. 😕
AlexFilms same
Same but my son broke it
I dislocated my left thumbstick
Same it not connecting at all
I threw my controller at the wall in frustration and the thumbstick came out -_- how tf is that possible
Austin Alexander you can put it back on without opening controller if nothing broke
silencz1 How tho??
My son did the same and now I'm here looking for videos to fix it
Me too and my left thumbstick is basically dislocated
Austin Alexander you threw a controller at a wall
Thanks again!
Lmaoo I took the backs off with my fingers while he took days using the flatheads
eh 2 years late but i ended up throwing my controller into the ground
worst design ever for repairability
Thank u. I was swapping joysticks but didn't know if i could just pop the back off or not
I found that if you break the little thing in the middle of those screws a small Allen wrench works as well.
YourMomJulio what did you use to break it
Can't I just cut the rotors off? I don't use them anyways...
Yes you can cut them off and the controller will work just fine.
+xXModdedWarfareXx Hey, what torx did you use to take off the eternal screws? not the first set, the 2nd and 3rd sets to actually have access to the led.
+A New Champion yea, those are smaller and they fucked me over
Illinois Native c
@@MrMemo0325 I think they are either T6 or T5.
PS4 controller is more easyer than the Xbox one controller
You say that, but our controllers actually last: My brother had a PS4 for at least 3 months, he broke 2; 1st was by throwing it at a wall (Not even that hard) 2nd was that one of the analog sticks completely broke. I've had an xbox one for 2 years, not a single breakage apart from some dirt and scratches now and then. But, I do agree on that PS4 controllers are easier to take apart than xbox controllers.
because playstation is shittier quality 😝
YouDieToCoffee i only need to spray mine so not much of an issue
Broken Matt Hardy [#DELETE] Are you aware that you can just plug the xbox one controller into the xbox one without any batteries in it just using an android charger?
Charles Rooks You say that, but you probably don't even know what spec is better 😂😂
Those smart enough to do this should just have enough money to buy another one. Fuck this proprietary bulletproof bullshit.
I just followed your instructions and was able to repair my kid's Xbox One controller. Thank you!
I love these videos. They really keep my tech repair business booming.....
Thanks this video helped me fix my son's controller 👍👍
Thank you very much, cant think this will help me after 6 years u uploaded, tks alot my man ;)
This actually does help. I have had an xbox one since 2013 with the day one release and I like the cover off of the controller.
This video saved my life. I had a piece of plastic stuck moving around inside my controller messing with the triggers and now I got it out. Thank you.
Cheers for video bud! Owned a torx security bit set for 15 years and finally get first chance to actually use it haha. Nice to hear a fellow Scot too 😉
It’s obvious that people’s money was the only thing Microsoft had in mind when designing their controllers to be like Fort Knox.
Thanks for the tutorial, this just saved me my Money, Gas & my Saturday off. I appreciate it.
Legend, saved me buying a new controller. Thanks mate !
8:40 = Broken bumper. If you try and just wing this part as depicted; "pops right out!" It will almost surely break. Just a heads up, this part of video is lacking. Be careful.
Just wanted to clean the exterior and crevices, this video really helped. Also if you really wanted to you could spray paint the controller panels.
For those who can’t get the screws out I used a eyeglass screwdriver and it helped out.
If you get a small flathead screwdriver a 35-1301 from ideal tools, you can use that to undo the screws without breaking off the security tab in the middle
My first ever controller's analog grip got broken over a year ago and I got two other controllers since...if I had discovered this a long time ago I could've just changed the grip after watching this video🤦. At least my gf got her own working controller after this video💯💯💯💯💯
this is the right video if you accidentally break a controller and are trying to fix it before your parents find out.
A hard rubber squeegee works super well for the first part.
