  • Ask your amp questions and I'll try to answer them. With coffee.
I hope some of the questions I couldn't get to last time are asked again, and hint hint: the earlier in the chat you ask a question the better the chance of it being answered, as I do three hours and it takes a while to get through as many as I can.
Please only ask your question once - I'll answer it as soon as I see it on my screen - and please start any questions with ???
It helps me to see the questions opposed to just regular chat stuff. Thanks.

" How quick the tinitus will kick in." Funniest thing I've heard in awhile.😂

"Pushieen" is the sound a sword makes being drawn from its sheath. Mike Adams knows his stuff, I want to send him some of my JM pickups. I've always loved the mini humbucker and thought it would work well in a Jazzmaster or Jag and I'm glad to see Josh Scott playing his Relevator guitar with the minis and the Mastery vibrato, what a combination!

Well, thanks, but it was grainy when I heard it back. This was a 1080 stream and YT has a terrible compression algorithm for HD. But 4K streams have a bigger lag.
Hard to do really good audio in a live stream.
Next time I’ll back the level down a bit, see if I can find a more YT friendly sound.
And later in the video when I was trying to show the ACDC thing it really hit a wall.
A shame, as it was great in the room.
I think I’ll shoot for a -4dBV ceiling on peaks next time.

An often overlooked area for tweaking reverb tone is a plate bypass cap on the recovery triode. Since there is no dry signal present you can get away with radical values. I like starting at about 680pF. There's good evidence that the 2200pF across the grid leak actually peaks highs/presence given the LRC circuit formed by the reverb tank output transducer, grid leak resistor and Miller capacitance and potentially inducing resonance.

That’s a good point. Two, actually.
That said, I usually find any issue is the tank, not the circuit, though sometimes it’s necessary to decrease the 3.3nF coupling cap to decrease lows with many modern tanks.

if one cant correlate0 the translation between layouts vs. schematics, thats the universe's way of telling you to keep studying these circuits. if resistors are just squiggly lines, if a capacitors job is to strike hella fear in your ability to get the +/- installed correctly, if, AC/DC to you is just short dudes with tall marshalls.. if you doubt the fact that you can die even if its unplugged, & if a variable resistors is the male.. you NEEEED to keep studying.
For knowing that capacitors can be directional & electricity can kill you isnt enough to allow you to influence/manipulate a ptp circuirt in a tube amp w desired results.. nope. been there, done that. when you understand that cathodes have resistors & capacitors to control the gain, bias & frequencies of a tube stage, plate load resistors can send more or less signal to the next stage, capacitors can use you for the path to ground, removing you from the stage. you threw away your 5000pc wire nut assortment kit & last but not least, variable resistors have no gender, then & only then will a schematic stop looking like the tattoo on the chinese gangsters down the street. & you can start to manipulate these circuits to suit your needs but keep studying. this page & Uncle are best source of information @ tube amp circuits you could ask for. i have a bunch of UD's videos in a saved folder, using his thumbnails like chapters. lots of them i saved not fully undertanding the content. its nice as you learn you can go back, re-view & have your EUREKA! moments like i did... single most important advice i can give to those wanting to build?.. yup. DO NOT use any of the Hammond multi-purpose, multi-tap transformers. the schematics are correct but super confusing to those ignorant such as I. & Hammond will not provide a tranny for dummies instructional. i have a pair of them in a 5F6A build i did 3yrs ago. just recently @ my 3rd rewire of the transformer & more studying did i understand the wiring needs of them. get their direct replacements with only the wires needed to hook it up, no multiple secondary windings, no multi volt taps, no ultra linear nonsense, no 4, 8 & wired together to make 16 ohm secondary.. youve been warned.

my apologies to lyle & those who've read my post. my comment was so long winded & with multiple edits, by the time i posted it i was already on a different you tube channel, this one, lol... ill delete it & repost @the intended channel. sorry for the mix-up!.. carry on the good work lyle, your channel is another source of trusted education..

Thanks for getting to my question. I have seen your video on the DR at low volumes. That was actually what encouraged me to try one for myself. I was in a small practice room and had a 68' Princeton reverb, a 65' deluxe reverb and a Vox ac15c1. I'm really leaning toward the DR, since I'd like to eventually start playing gigs. By the way, don't get me started on the ac10c1 (my current amp). it is incredibly temperamental and inconsistent. Every day it sounds different. Usually I find it too bright and harsh, but sometimes it sounds really nice. Recently it seems like the bass has been supercharged. I have to turn it on about 20 minutes before I use it and that seems to help avoid some other weird issues. Every once in a great while it does the beautiful vox chime thing, with certain chords, and I have no idea why. The amp seems to prefer rainy days.

Looking forward to watching through since I couldn't make it to the whole show. I feel like I could have asked my question in a better way, so if you got to it and was able to make sense of what I meant to ask I'll definitely be appreciative. I'll come back with an edit after I finish watching. I'd make it if I could. Looks like the first question was something I was also curious about. Thanks again for taking the time to do these shows.

P F : the danelectro made Airline amps used the 6X4 rectifier tubes. Probably not every model, but several of the Sears and Montgomery Ward type amps did use them. Those amps actually sound pretty nice, but they are low wattage units without a great deal of headroom. Not quite bedroom amps, but not quite gigging amps either. Thus, why they are not remembered. Best of luck.

I hate when I have to work on a Saturday and miss these live streams! I do have a question if you have a moment, Lyle, for my AC15 project: I've seen where most schematics in Grosvenor book and online show AC15 or AC30 circuits using a 16uF-16uF-8uF-uF-8uF filter string for the power supply, yet more modern examples beef those up 32-32-16-16-16uF. For a more stripped back circuit like what I am wanting to do (no vib/trem or reverb, just a bright channel and normal channel feeding into a shared cathode follower tone stack.) would you recommend the vintage or more modern values? I've thought of splitting the difference with 22,22,10,10,10uF since I have some nice Nichicon radial caps in those values, but wanted feedback from someone more experienced with those circuits than I. Thanks!

The 22/10 setup will do you nicely. Use 22 if you add a top boost circuit (JMI was 30 because they had them in stock).

Hmm, I didn't get a notification for this livestream..... Although I was in the middle of a plumbing repair project and probably could not have joined in anyway....
